With New Moon ruling the box office this weekend, director Chris Weitz must be glad to put the failure of The Golden Compass behind him. In fact, he admitted as much in Variety’s announcement of his next project, The Gardener. He didn’t hold backĀ  at all on trash talking New Line, just check out some of the quotes after the break. Weitz also made it clear that he’s not retiring after this next project.

First, The Gardener: The film looks decidedly simpler in scope than his recent projects. It’s the story of a Mexican immigrant living in LA and his efforts to protect his son. Weitz co-wrote the script along with Eric Eason (Manito). About A Boy showed Weitz had a knack for small-scale dramas, so I’m hoping this film ends up similarly good.

As for Newline and The Golden Compass, he mentioned that the studio took the film away from him and cut out 30 minutes (which I’d honestly really like to see), diminishing the message of the original novels. There was definite promise in the first quarter of Compass, what with the great animal special effects and Daniel effing Craig–I’d like to see just how much the studio’s meddling ruined the film.

Says Weitz:

It was an utter violation of my status as a director and the worst thing that has happened to me professionally.

I was treated badly, it was almost like they never read the books. They seemed frightened of offending the right. This was a wonderful experience by comparison. I got to work with terrific young actors at the top of their game, and see Taylor Lautner perform so well.

He denies the rumors that he’s retiring, especially since he says he was “reinvigorated” by working on New Moon. I’m glad he’s moving beyond the failure of Compass, I just wish the guy had done it with a better film than New Moon.

I'm one The Golden Compass' few defenders, but I would love to see the new footage. Shame on New Line for cutting it; there are few things more offensive to an artist than to have your work taken and changed against your will.

I really liked Golden Compass too. Say what you will, but two giant polar bears fighting is not to be mocked. I had no idea they recut it without him. It's still a really good movie, but I'd love to see Weitz's cut. (And the two sequels, but I guess that's never happening.)

I didn't even think the theatrical cut was TOO bad relative to the book. A few things were missing and some scenes were moved around, but it followed the events of the book pretty well, even though it kinda neutered it. I wish they were making the sequels, too.

He did a good job with what was given to him. The directing was the least shit thing about New Moon.

Just imagine how much money these Twilight films would have made if the scripts and directing were any good.
  • topheavy
I loved what you did just then.
  • It was quite obvious that The Golden Compass had been recut by someone who had no idea what the book was like. And at the time there were plenty of rumours, I'm glad Weitz has now made it clear that the film as it was, was not how he had intended it to be. He always seemed very passionate about the project, so it must've been very hard for him.

But yeah, it is a shame that New Moon is his come back. In terms of merit and message the Twilight books are the absolute antithesis of Philip Pullman's series.

I hope The Gardener can give him some cinematic credibility again.

Yeah, THE GOLDEN COMPASS was a wasted opportunity and it pained me that it was, since the His Dark Materials books were my Harry Potter before Harry Potter came out. And it was clear that the fault lies with Bob Shaye, the head of New Line and not Chris. I too would love to see a director's cut, since all the problems of the film could be solved in the edit suite.

At the bottom of the page, there's a piece I wrote about THE GOLDEN COMPASS and what needed to be fixed. Check it out.

When Golden Compass came out, I remember Weitz saying he was hoping to release a Directors Cut that was about 30 minutes longer.

I still don't understand why New Line didn't give the movie a chance unlike what they did with Lord of the Rings....

The film version of the Golden Compass removed the origional ending that made the entire book matter.

In the film it ends with them flying into the sunset with a false happy ending.

In the book Lara accidentally leads her friend to his death at the hands of her father. Her father opens a gateway to another world from the energy of the little kids death. Her parents kiss and say they are going to this new world and they want her to come, she then rejects them as her mother and father, damning them. As her parents travel to the new world, she vows to follow them and stop them in their plotting. The movie ends with her stepping into another world.

The worst part is, the entire sequence I just described was completely shot, with footage from it even making it into the trailer for the film. Test audiences didn't like it so New Line removed it from the final cut, destroying the impact and intent of the book.

You can't watch how it should have been here, assembled from trailer clips from the trailer and videogames.

For this Reason I don't blame Weitz at all for how Compass turned out. It was obvious new line was making a ploy for the next Lord of the Rings and wanted an upbeat ending, and if that's the case they should have chose a different book series.

Fuck Christ Weitz. He is a schmuck. Of course he's not retiring now, he's rolling on a bed of cash. He doesn't ACTUALLY care about making good movies, he cares about making POPULAR ones.

Here's a direct quote from him recently, and what really made me want to smash his face in:

"Every time I make a movie, I'm pretty much convinced it's the last time . . . and that it's really a rather silly occupation to undertake."

He's calling the one career that I am fighting tooth and nail to have for myself 'silly'. The medium that so many masters have used to create art that stands the test of time. He calls this 'silly'. Why? Because he had a bad experience on the set of...what? His third film? Fuck this guy. He's not in this for the right reasons.

    Haha, agreed.

Studio intervention doesn't explain why The Golden Compass was so flat, lifeless and pretty much devoid of vision and scope. The ambition was there, Weitz just isn't a director capable of pulling it off.

Word. 30 more minutes wasn't going to save that shit.
  • musicsoup
i can't look at Chris Weitz's face without thinking "Chuck and Buck, Suck and Fuck." Sorry Chris.

The Golden Compass is the only movie i've ever been viscerally angry with. Red faced, hands clenched, still-holding-a-grudge angry.
