joseph_gordon-levitt_snl

This takes some balls. Joseph Gordon-Levitt did his first gig hosting Saturday Night Live this past weekend. He took the stage looking like a guy who could barely contain his excitement, and proceeded to launch into a recreation of one of the most famous song and dance numbers from any film musical: Donald O’Connor’s ‘Make ‘em Laugh’ from Singin’ in the Rain. And he nailed it!

OK, so ‘Make ‘em Laugh’ is pretty much ripped off wholesale from Cole Porter’s ‘Be a Clown’, but you can’t deny the landmark status of the O’Connor performance from Singin’ in the Rain. When I was young, the physicality of O’Connor’s routine was a big part of what made me look differently at the movie musical. Between his mugging and the amazing presence of Gene Kelly, I started to see musicals as venues for brilliant displays of physical ability. I love big chunks of Singin’ in the Rain in exactly the same way I love the setpieces from classic ’80s Jackie Chan movies. The spirit of those performances is almost exactly the same.

The bumper image above was a pretty dead giveaway that Levitt was going to do a Singin’ in the Rain routine, but to see him tackle ‘Make ‘em Laugh’ live onstage, complete with the wall-flip ending, was damned impressive. I wonder if  more of the studio audience knew the number than he expected — if so that actually raises the bar, because there were some expectations. Regardless, I think he did a great job. It’s a lot of fun to see someone almost breathlessly excited to be doing the gig.

How could this have gone down? Look what happened when the great Tim Curry did it at the Oscars a few years back.

Normally I’d embed the presentation from Hulu here, because it would be high quality. But they cut out the number entirely — maybe a rights issue? — so here’s a less visually glorious YouTube presentation instead. Below that is the original Singin’ in the Rain version; watch the two in series and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s performance stands up. No small feat, to be stacked against O’Connor.

I really like JG-L. Dude's got some ninja skills.

    (500) DAYS OF SUMMER is one of the best romcoms ever made. Say what you want, it describes relationships magnificently.
  • Kyle C.
Couldn't agree more. No matter what kind of relationship you are or aren't in, the film makes you feel good and understand that the bad times are necessary and that makes the good times that much better. I seriously loved that movie and I hate romcoms. It doesn't hurt that Leavitt is cool as hell and Deschanel is my dream girl.
  • keesvd
Kyle, damn. Exactly my thoughts too.
  • AntoBlueberry
The guy is really great. I remember him sitting on some stairs during a Venice film festival, really at ease as no one was bothering him.
It was probably after a screening of Misterious Skin that went very well.
I hope they will cast him instead of Shia Le Bouef (a la bourguignonne) as Yorick in the Y: the Last Man movie.
  • Help!
I've really liked JGL since mysterious skin, but I never even thought about him as yorick. That would be awesome.
  • Scruffmcgruff
after watching that, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is my favorite person ever
  • dude is mega talented, liked every performance I've seen of his. The dude just showed some great stunt capabilities and great slapstick.
  • RayA
This was great -- he's a real talent. 500 Days was one of my favorite movies this summer, and if you haven't seen it because of the romcom thing, it's not like that at all. Looking forward to following his career.
  • Rick James, bitch
    Cocaine is a wonderful drug.
  • Very impressive.
  • thelastknowngod
this guy has some serious skill. The Lookout, Brick, Mysterious Skin, (500) Days of Summer, 10 Things I Hate About You, Manic.. the list goes on an on..

one of my fav actors out there today.
  • Kyle C.
Don't forget G.I. Joe, haha. I think it's funny that his paycheck movie required him to hardly show his face. I wonder if he did that on purpose?
  • kateyrich
Anyone who has ever sleepwalked their way through an SNL hosting gig deserves to be punched in the face. Well done JGL.
  • Steve_Kasan
Joseph is a real talent. A REAL talent cut from the Golden Age and this just proves it. The dude can do anything and yet he had to wear a stupid mask for G.I.Joe.
  • Never knew he had such ninja skills.
  • Sockin
JGL seems like one of the most talented and down to earth people. I'm stoked that he's starting to get the recognition that he deserves.
  • Sockin
Also the sketch at the end recreating "Say Anything..." was awesome.
  • AlexB
I saw some blog criticizing how his performance didn't stand up to the original. And that he was panting a lot. True, but he did it live. It one freaking take. It was great.
  • And the original would have been dubbed.
  • DavidA
I totally agree with Alex. Donald O'Connors bit is a classic, but, be honest; he was lip-synching while he danced..and I'm sure had several takes. JGL sang whle he danced, and in front of a live audience! No wonder he was panting. Great bit by a super actor.
  • Kyle C.
That was one of the coolest things SNL has done in a long time. They need to do more cool shit like that in between their shitty "sketch" comedy bits. Gordan-Leavitt is the effing man!
  • scott
When my wife and I saw him beginning to do this, a big smile came across my face, that smile turned to a partial frown as I felt he was trying too hard and of course noone will capture that magic that Donald Oconner had when he did this in the movie. The punching seemed very out of place too.
  • RussFischer
I can see the 'trying too hard' comment, but when it seems like so many people either sleepwalk through this show (as mentioned in other comments) or cultivate a ridiculously aloof persona, I'll take JGL's enthusiasm. It was refreshing.
  • Loved seeing JGL do this number - he really seemed to be having fun with it. Though I did get a bit of a smile when I noticed that SNL had cheated and slanted the walls for him.

And count me in as a fan of that SAY ANYTHING sketch that closed the night.
  • sajester
The original had slanted walls as well. Watch the clip.
  • Me
"Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s performance stands up," I'd have to disagree there, doesn't even come close to O'Connors performance but a nice try though. He is a very good actor, interested to see him in "Inception".
  • Loved watching JGL perform this number, especially seeing as how he was having so much fun doing it. I did get a smile though when I noticed that SNL had cheated and slanted the walls for him.

Oh, and count me in as a fan of that SAY ANYTHING sketch. Why that was burried at the end of the show, I'll never understand.
  • I love JGL after seeing (500) days of summer and after that i love him even more....Plus is it me or do actors not work as hard to entertain as they used to....Oconnor is a very very talented man and it seems that now its jut good looks that gets you in and thats it.
  • starscream9289
After this, I can totally forgive him for ruining Cobra Commander.
  • Octoberist
he's such a good actor in Brick and 500 Days of Summer that GI Joe was just a fluke.
  • Marja
I for one am glad that you posted a youtube clip, because I never get to see the hulu videos 'cause I live in Europe.

Thanks for posting! Singing in the Rain is one of my favourite films of all time.
  • yourmom
Proof that he could pick up Ledger's Joker and Run with it.
  • No Really.
500 Days of Summer was shite but this was mildly entertaining.
  • Dan
one of the bets eps of SNL of the new era. only one dead sketch in my book (family thanksgiving)
  • Solid
ha ha. he looks asian but he isn't.
  • MylesL
Normally I’d embed the presentation from Hulu here, because I like to lose international readers.
    fix'd for you there.
  • when i was watching this and he started doing the backflips, i was afraid i was gonna watch a broken neck on live tv.
  • Watanabex
if anyone can play the joker in batman 3, it's him
  • guest
Thanks Russ for the youtube clip and for not posting a hulu version that the majority of the world can't watch (even if it's not the majority of your readers) it's appreciated.
  • GreatBigLion
He was being super-silly, but I loved him for it. He was awesome in "(500) Days of Summer" and "Brick", and he's getting the mainstream recognition he deserves. On Late Night, he spent a few minutes gushing over The Roots. His enthusiasm adds to his personality, and he's a great actor to boot. Bravo, JGL, for hosting the best SNL of this season so far. The Obama-Hintao opening and the Weekend Update were priceless.
  • I love JGL, and this was pretty good. But Donald O'Connor is simply the man. Hands down.
  • Coolest, most committed actor I've ever been around on a movie set.
  • CRASHkennedy
    its gone??
  • CRASHkennedy
omg just saw it and levitt is in direct competition with brad pitt for my favorite actor pic
