Casting For The Crow Remake Underway

thecrow1

Casting is underway for the next theatrical iteration of The Crow, and the actor chosen will face the still-daunting task of walking in the late Brandon Lee’s Goth-approved footsteps. Last month, I reported on an update of the script written by Blade director Stephen Norrington, and today brings an update from producer Ryan Kavanaugh (Brothers, Nine). So, what guy will be chosen—re: a female Crow is not being considered—to reprise the role of an undead rock musician who wreaks havoc on mortal goons? Let us know what you think of Kavanaugh’s comments and leave your own below.

Kavanaugh tells io9 that while the revamp (”not a remake”) hasn’t gotten an official greenlight, he foresees all facets coming together in the next few months. A release date of 2011 is currently listed on IMDB.

Are you casting right now and looking?

We’re looking. We’re in discussions….I think it’s something cool, we’re approaching it differently. It’s really a whole relaunch of the franchise, much more of a dark superhero type. It will be an actor you’ve heard of, yes. We’re not ruling anything out. We’re looking at both, with the very well known and the “very talented but they may not be quite there yet.”

Way to limit it down. He may as well have revealed, “Well, I can tell you that it’s not Edward Furlong (pictured happily above in Crow: Wicker Prayer) or Matthew Perry.” He goes on to say that the gritty tone of the revamp will be faithful to the 1994 cult hit, and that The Crow’s makeup will be different but, you know, the same.

He also compares the new look and feel of the character to Batman Begins, a par for the course analogy for all of today’s comic book remakes (until Kick-Ass usurps it). However, it doesn’t quite fit in this instance. Begins was darker and more realistic compared to its predecessors, sure, but the original Crow was a faithfully nihilistic comic book adaptation set in a drug-addled metropolis with grounded characters (Ernie Hudson played a likable and weary cop). Fifteen years later, the film remains one of the few creatively and financially successful R-rated superhero adaptations (the first two Blade films and Sin City are others), so a comparison to the PG-13 Begins or The Dark Knight would theoretically imply a softer, trendier take.

And we’ve known that it’s the first entry in a planned, theatrically-released franchise, so perhaps a PG-13 is in the cards? Then again, Norrington has described his vision as “hard edged” with a handheld-like aesthetic associated with R-rated horror fare. One topic not mentioned thus far is the project’s soundtrack; to this day, the original film’s is viewed as a time-capsule of ’90s Nothing Records-era rock (JAMC, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult) alongside the more bizarre novelty that was Judgement Night’s grunge/rap hookups. Since the character’s involvement and foundation in rock ‘n’ roll music and its stylings is ingrained in the source material, I expect music to once again play a vital role. Fans will be checking for suitable music second to the chosen actor, so the filmmakers can’t over look this.

Who should be next up to set blaze to a crow-shaped trail of gasoline?

May I suggest: one of the Birds of War?

If they do a remake in the same gritty, realistic, manic style as the graphic novel I'd be interested. Otherwise forget it. If you thought the original Crow movie was dark, check out the novel. It's a trip through some serious dementia that the movie only scratched the surface of. Ironically, the movie was more of a comic book than the source material. Eric and his fiancee are killed for circulating a petition by a slumlord and his armed coalition of...organized vandals who are responsible for Devil's Night? Huh. That, and the bad guys are practically supervillains with "powers": Top Dollar with his mysticism and swordplay, T-Bird with his demolitions, Tin Tin with his knives, etc. In the comic it was a random act of violence that created the Crow, not some criminal conspiracy, and the bad guys are nothing but a long line of crackheads, ghetto rats, and petty thugs--you know, the type you see lurking about the shadows of any city. And don't get me wrong I enjouyed the first movie, but would still love to see a Crow movie based in gritty realism that fully explores the downward spiral into madness.

Don't remake a film that someone died for. Once they remake it everyone will forget about the original and that will pretty much spit in the face of the original even if it is good or lame. Brandon Lee is the only crow an if anyone else plays him it will be crap just look at the stupid sequels that came after the original. I say leave it alone.

That doesn't make sense. In order for people to forget about the original, they would have to remember it first. If they remember it now, why would they forget about it after it is re-made? If anything, it is more likely to introduce a new generation of moviegoers to the original, who may have not already seen it.

The original crow was a excellent movie. It had everything, action, love, revenge, horror, and a great soundtrack. I loved the movie and I still catch myself watching it sometimes. Im personally not upset with the idea of a "remake" but it would be so hard to make it right. The problem is that todays idea of "style" and "music" and "entertainment" is almost complete trash. Back in 1994, it took more than special effects and a "hot cast" to make a great movie. The crow was original. It had a dark feel to it and the story and the heart that was put into it is what made it great. Obviously not everyone liked the original crow, but the ones here saying it was terrible are most likely young kids who think movies like Twilight and all this "reality" tv is good, and thats sad because 99% of that is total garbage. What made the crow great back then will be very hard to recreate now. Im sure they will ruin any remake today with a bunch of pretty boy actors and a stupid amount of cg that makes the whole movie seem fake. I believe another crow movie could be made, but it would be very hard to please the fans of the original, and even harder to fill brandon lees shoes as eric.

I think it would be interesting to see the remake and subsequent sequels following the original intended storyline. The original film with Brandon Lee was supposed to be a trilogy, but they did not want to recast after his death so they wrapped up the story in the ending of the film. Originally, there was a character called the Skull Cowboy who was there to explain the rules of the afterlife to Eric; that he was sent back for a purpose and if he strayed off track he would no longer be invulnerable, and by going far off track he would be doomed to walk the earth for eternity and never be reunited with Shelly. There was a deleted scene where, after he shoots Funboy and helps Darla by getting the morphine out of her bloodstream, Funboy attacks him with a straight razor. Since he had helped Darla, he strayed from his purpose, and Funboy cut him a few times. You can see the electrical tape he uses to bandage these wounds throughout the rest of the film. Anyway, by going to save Sarah at the end of the film, he was originally supposed to be told by the Skull Cowboy that he was doomed to walk the earth and never see Shelly again (rough footage of this scene is on youtube somewhere, and the skull cowboy can be seen for a few seconds in a montage on the dvd.) The film was supposed to end there setting up for a sequel. I never really watched it much, but supposedly the television series started to explore this a bit more. I would be really interested to see these events play out in a trilogy like they were originally intended to before Brandon's untimely death.
  • I swear to god, Hollywood is full of idiots. Why, why, why would they even try to do a remake or a revamp of The Crow? The original was perfect, they don't need a damn remake of it. I've read around that it might be a whole new story about a new character, even then why give it the same name. This was Brandon Lees last film and probably his greatest, they don't need to mess with it in ANY way and the blade director no less. Blade was a disgrace of a freakin vampire movie so I don't even want to imagine what this version or remake of The Crow will be like. First the man who made Freddy Krueger an icon doesn't even get a crappy small part in the new Nightmare and now this. These people should all be beatin over the head with a pipe!

  • Sam I'Anson
Absolutly gutted that The Crow is to be remade again,The first one was amazing and should be left alone. The sequels were crap and couldn't compare with the original and as for trying to find an actor to step into brandon's shoes good look pal it ain't gonna happen!
  • evilsaywhat
I'd like to see Christian Kane in the role. I loved him as Lindsey on Angel and would like to see him take on a leading role.
  • .Perfect timing to remake this and get it out there while the trend is hot. I'd like to see a remake-- see if they can explore anything else that the original was lacking.
  • wonka bar
If people would quit paying money to see these bad remakes, hollywood would knock it off....but since there are still people out there going to see these cash cows, it won't change!
  • evanz
Ok, now for my serious answer...Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Think about it.
  • evanz
    Too soon. Too soon.
  • Tom
Wow, you guys are all really funny.

I'm stunned by the comedic brilliance on display. Heath Ledger jokes, Brandon Lee jokes--both are just mind-blowingly original. I just can't pick which joke is my favorite.

Btw, have you guys heard of hamster dance and Chuck Norris? Oh, and pedobear's a good one, too!
  • jasonb26
did not just reference bird of war?!?! very fucking well played hunter!
  • greggorybasore
As optimistic as I try to be on most projects,... I can't really see any good coming from this.... except perhaps for James O'Barr getting another fat paycheck, then again I don't know if he'd even want it.
  • Larry Blake
I think Heath Ledger would be perfect! Too soon?
  • justinlecair
I wish Ledger was alive to do it. He would have been amazing at pretty much anything he threw his hat into. What a tragedy.
  • Skid
Wow! He looks just like him, hopefully Heath can free up some time in his schedule.
  • sean
not too soon, just too fucking lame
  • capawesome
    lol, perfect.
  • Haha. (@ sean's comment)
  • starscream9289
The original really isn't THAT great.

Anyone else think that Joseph Gordon-Levitt should be cast as Eric Draven?

He looks just like Brandon Lee.
  • I've added my latest casting suggestion to the post. Let us know what you think. Does it eat Crow?
  • jimmybfresco
I liked the original film but the rest of this series is trash.
Technically weren't all the sequels remakes or revamps. To call the films sequels would imply that the story actually progresses which it doesn't. They just retell the revenge scenario with less stylized action each time.
  • Randy
The original was shit and they managed to somehow make even shittier sequels. I can't imagine they can make anything any worse. A shame Brandon Lee had to go out while filming such a mediocre film whose fan base is mall-goths and basement virgins.
  • sean
ugh, remakes. the original was pretty awful, hopefully this is better
  • Torello
wow, for all u pop lovin fags, the crow was a great movie, (sean and randy) it was one of the best films of all time, not just opinion, its a fact, plotline, cast, everything involved. of course they should stop with the sequels and they should be shot for even considering a remake. so for u haters here i suggest u go back to watching lord of the rings and be amazed with ur c.g.i
  • Man, Furlong looks so goth, he probably shits bats.

Lemme rephrase the casting question: What actor do you wanna see get shot?
  • TheTrebor
i think they should leave it alone, i loved the first crow movie with brandon lee and i dont know if anyone could act that part as good as he did.
