It took me a while to get used to seeing Dawson Creek star Joshua Jackson in Fringe, but like the series itself, Jackson eventually found a groove that I enjoyed revisiting. Now it seems he’s sticking with the supernatural themes from Fringe with his next project. Jackson has signed on for the lead in UFO, an adaptation of the cult-hit British TV series.

Jackson will be playing the of Paul Foster, which Variety describes (along with the plot) as “a test pilot who joins S.H.A.D.O. (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization), a covert org built under a Hollywood studio that defends Earth against a race of aliens who have been abducting humans and using the body parts.” I haven’t heard much about this series, but I could definitely see the premise working for a decent B-level sci-fi romp.

The film will be directed by Matthew Gratzner, a first-time director who has worked as the visual effects supervisor on films like Iron Man, Shutter Island, and The Fountain. The script comes courtesy of first-time screenwriters Ryan Gaudet and Joseph Kanarek.

Given Gratzner’s massive SFX credentials, UFO will probably look great at the very least. Let’s not forget that District 9 director Neil Blomkamp came out of the VFX world as well, and he was able to make that film look incredible on the cheap.

Says Gratner:

Character development is the most critical part of ‘UFO,’ and Joshua’s terrific talent and range is exactly what I need to convey the inner conflict of the character of Paul Foster.

I would agree with him there from Jackson’s Fringe performance alone. He went on to star in a few films post-Dawson, including Shutter and Battle in Seattle, but nothing of much note. Here’s hoping that his newfound relevancy with Fringe will lead to better things.

everything about this sounds amazing - especially the possibility of a "B-level sci-fi romp."!!!!!

i like Jackson's work on Fringe.

This might sound stupid and immature, but prior to Fringe, I've dislike him because he had a pudgy face. He kinda lost it now though.

he has a mini-george clooney face

UFO was a terrifying kids show, in that Earth had defences but, frankly, no-one was safe from them. Also, if you got involved with SHADO chances were they would end up having to sacrifice you for the greater good - nice moral ambiguities for the time. The VFX even then were excellent coming from Gerry Anderson although some of the acting and some of the outfits were (as I now see as an adult) a bit shonky. Still - it's a high tech look at the far future world of 1980 - what's not to love?

lol, Devindra "likes revisiting Joshua Jackson's groove"

I'd of liked to have seen someone who'd impressed me more on the big screen attacehd to this project, a character actor rather than someone that the producers think will give the film geeek cred, but Pacey doesn't have the stigma attached to him that he used to, so this isn't exactly bad news.

Actually, if you want to see him in a really good film, try to find a small Canadian movie he starred in called ONE WEEK. He plays a failed writer turned teacher who finds out that he has stage 4 cancer. And he decides before going into treatment to take a road trip on a motorbike across Canada for an adventure. It's really funny and emotional and shows he has a pretty wide range.

    Here's the trailer.

I'll watch this. I love shows like the one he's set to star in.
Also Pacey was the man in Dawson's Creek.

It's wierd, I have always hated this guy for some reason. I thought the dude couldn't act his way out of a plactic bag but I've been really digging him on Fringe. Honestly, I think the more serious he gets, the better he is. He's just not that good at the comedy schtick he tries sometimes.

The title made me think he was going to be in Supernatural, which got me pretty excited. Oh well. My roommate and I are gonna start watching Fringe soon.

I've followed this guys career since The Mighty Ducks. Loved him on Dawson's Creek and enjoyed Ronnie & Julie on LD. I'm looking forward to his future works.
