The Apatow-verse still hasn’t dealt with sequels as of yet, but it’s bound to happen eventually. Yesterday Judd Apatow appeared on the Funny or Die Writer’s Room and talked about topics ranging from his first project and living with Adam Sandler, to potential sequels for films he’s directed or produced. In regards to the latter, he offered up some info on the potential for Superbad and Pineapple Express sequels.

Apatow seemed pretty confident that Superbad 2 probably won’t happen anytime soon, despite how much he’s begged Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. He says “they don’t want to ruin it”, and that “it’s a gem of a movie, and they don’t want a crappy second.” He goes on to say that there’s a little talk of a Pineapple Express sequel, and that we’d “have a better shot at seeing that.”

While I had fun with Superbad, I’d personally much rather see any film in the Pineapple Express universe—if only to see James Franco reprise his role. Superbad’s story seemed fairly well contained, whereas Pineapple Express could potentially continue as a series of stoner adventures a la Cheech and Chong.

Apatow also makes quick mention of Get Him to the Greek, the spin-off film from Forgetting Sarah Marshall. The film is the closest thing the Apatow-verse has gotten to a sequel (he calls it a “sideways sequel”). He says “It’s sort of like My Favorite Year on heroin”.

To a degree, I much prefer the fact that the Apatow films (both directed and produced) have each been somewhat different. I appreciate that they’d rather move on to new and original ideas instead of trying to create an endless franchise. This is a philsophy I wish formerly-great comedians like Eddie Murphy and Steve Martin could follow as well.

Discuss: Were you looking forward to a Superbad or Pineapple Express sequel? Would you like to see a sequel made for any other Apatow film?

Pineapple express 2 would be a hell of a lot better than that medieval movie James Franco is doing next.
  • And now he is on General Hospital.
  • My wife and I was watching TV and we didnt know it was General Hospital at first and we Laugh so hard when they said "on the next General Hospital".
  • Daniel Berg
That medieval movie actually sounds really amazing, I mean Franco and Danny McBride teaming up for a film directed by David Gordon Green who did Pineapple along with several amazing other films and written by McBride. Having read the script, it is hilarious and I cannot wait for this movie.

Don't forget that Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel are also in it, I mean what more could you freaking ask for from a movie. I'll probably drop dead trying to look into both of their gorgeous pairs of eyes at the same time.
  • Whatever happened to the possibility of a crossover sequel between the two. That could have really worked.
  • That would have been interesting, but looks like that's def not going to happen at this point.
  • That's too bad. Has anything like that ever been done before?

How could that work if Seth Rogan played a cop in Superbad?

twin brothers separated at birth. they get back together and all sorts of hell is raised.

Thank god you people aren't making these movies.

Ha, they might as well be, anyone but Apatow would probably seriously consider that.

I would like a sequel to Superbad, but it would have to be really good, Rogen and Goldberg are right, don't ruin it with a crappy sequel.

Forget those two, what happened to Anchorman 2
  • Tetsuo_Man
^This. Also, wasn't there suppose to be a third film in the everyday man trilogy (the first two being Anchorman and Ricky Bobby). I'm basing that off what I remember reading in a wikipedia article like 2 years ago.

I absolutely love Pineapple Express, more than most.
    Superbad, not so much.

Steve Martin is still great. Sure, he makes the occasional "Pink Panther" for cash, but his "Born Standing Up" memoir was excellent, he's branched out with dramedies like "Shopgirl" (based on his novella), and right now is promoting his banjo album. He's still one of the great talents left alive.

I love how Eddie Murphy and Steve Martin both get slagged on by you for doing sequels instead of original works, and yet whenever they do original stuff more often than not most people don't seem interested in them. For both actors it seems that their most successful movies are generally the ones that critics hate and their most entertaining movies are the ones that most people ignore.

    Here's three examples:
    Holy Man
    Bow Finger
    The Spanish Prisoner

All 3 are great movie featuring Steve Martin or Eddie Murphy (or both) and are also movies that have been largely forgotten.

As for Apatow, I'm digging what he's doing and is glad that he's not jumping into sequels, but I would love to see a Pineapple Express 2
  • They're probably not talked about much because those movies happened 10 YEARS AGO :P Since then Murphy and Martin have done only a few things of note.

And as much as I wanted to enjoy Shopgirl, I really couldn't.

Even when those movies came out no one was talking about them (least in my circles they weren't) all that much and they were slagged off as failures due to lack of huge box office gross.

I'd have to pick my brains for current movies from them, but I think the same thing still applies. The most interesting stuff I've heard of from either guy has been declared box office failures. The stuff that they've made the most cash from has interested me very little.

At some point I want to see shop girl and pluto nash just to see what I think. I have trouble imagining that either one would appeal to me less or be less entertaining than say... Cheaper by the Dozen or Daddy Day Care.

I agree. I love Superbad and I think they wrapped it up nicely at the end Pineapple Express, which I also love just as much, deserves a sequel. Or maybe make a spin-off movie based on Redd.
  • Pineapple Express Would be nice but i rather see Step Brothers 2

I'm astounded and very pleasantly surprised that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have good enough heads on their shoulders not to want to make a sequel to Superbad. I was literally thinking about this just a few days ago and hoping that they don't, because Superbad was a great, great movie and I just don't want to see a sequel, even it doesn't turn out to be horrible. I just gained a lot of respect for Seth Rogen. Seems like one of the few people in Hollywood - both behind and in front of the camera - who have a sense of integrity left.

Doing a sequel to Pineapple seems like a responsibility for Rogen. The first one was a great stoner movie, actually my second favorite of all of them. It's something they need to turn into a series to incorporate weed smoking as casual and desensitize people like they did with the homos.
And I think it'd be cool to see a spin-off of Superbad that focuses on McLovin and the cops
  • Superbad 2 would be like American Pie 2…. they're in college, so getting the 3 of them together would be kinda forced. Well, maybe not since McLovin and George Michael are roommates, but that's freshman year. Most people don't care for Jonah Hill, especially in that role.
