Jackass 3D in 2010?

jackass_3d

There’s a lot I like about Jackass, particularly the first movie, but I wasn’t entirely sure that we’d ever need or even be able to stomach another film from the guys. Now I hear that this film will be in 3D, however, my mind is racing with excitement at the prospect.

Part of what made Jackass possible were mobile, lightweight video cameras, so to shoot in 3D would likely require some custom rigs. None of the commerical rigs would be agile or portable enough for the freewheeling, long-range camera work needed to pull off Jackass as we knew it. Of course, there’s a possibility that the hand-held camerawork would have to be eschewed this time around. Boo! That’d be a bad move.

William G Boss spotted the listing for Jackass 3D on the Paramount slate for 2010, marking the very first occasion I’d heard of it at all. A quick Google search turned up WhoIs data for a Jackass 3D site belonging to the studio. This thing looks absolutely real.

Sifting through the Jackassworld official site for references to 3D, I found a handful but none of them acknowledging the existence of the film. Instead, they were stories on Jackass-adjacent activity, such as X Games 3D The Movie.

An IMDB page exists for a Jackass 3, scheduled for next year and once again directed by Jeff Tremaine. Though it’s possibly all just IMDP piffle, the roster of participants currently listed include all of the usual suspects, from Johnny Knoxville and Chris Pontius to Bam Margera and Steve-O.

The stereo aspect is a perfect match for the material, I think, with it’s dependence on real-world urgency and rough readiness. It also provides a strong incentive for viewers to get up off their bongwater stained beanbags and make a trip to the cinema as well as, I would hope, giving Tremaine and Co. plenty of scope for new and original ways to hurt themselves and one another.

  • NEW RELEVANT.
I worked on a proof of concept for someone, i can get the name if you(slashfilm) are interested. We rotoed out people from the scene and had a stereo rig setup in a compositing program, i was using fusion, but my partner was using nuke i believe.

All i was told was, it was a proof of concept. SO i assume that convinced studios.
It was the part where they throw cards at wee-man

    Sounds interesting.
  • I'm all for another Jackass. As idiotic as they are, those are some of the most fun movies I have ever seen. Even their outtakes (2.5) were hilarious, fun, and addictive.

Not so sure about 3D, but I'm willing to let them try it. I'll see this as soon as it comes out.

checkout the custom rigs the guys who made Crank used. Just from looking at those I think it'd be pretty easy to get some 3d rigs made up. I'm sure it wouldn't be used for every shot, but wouldn't think it'd be too hard to fabricate up a swing arm with a camera in the center and then other over on either end...and you can either make it hand/body held or attached to their truck/atv or whatever.
  • Went to a panel on 3D, and from what I gathered if the 3D isn't done right, then headaches will ensue. They showed us examples of it done right (Avatar and Up) and then wrong (Defender 3D), and the difference was stark.

You need to have the convergence exactly right, with correct interocular distance and toeing in of the cameras.
If it isn't set up exactly right (which would be hard to do on a homemade rig) then it's no fun to watch.

That said... it would be nice if they figured out an inexpensive portable rig, but a problem right now with 3D is that those don't exist.
  • the new, smaller, camera by red can modified to shoot 3D, and is easily shoulder mounted and very portable.

don't you need at least 3 cameras to make a true 3D scene...how could 1 camera do so?
  • BrendonConnelly
You need two lenses, each pointed at an their own film/CCD recording simultaneously. That really means two cameras in effect.

Because I'm dying to see Steve-O's scarred ass in 3D.

Although the 2nd Jackass was lacking compared to the first, I'll definitely see the 3rd movie. Jackass always sends me into convulsions of laughter.

Can't pull it off...? This sounds a lot like betting against spike jones to me.
  • Aquigley
I didnt know people regarded the 2nd movie as worst. For me it's a work of genius
  • i could care less about 3d, but am always excited to see a jackass movie, great mindless entertainment
  • 'William G Boss' is a new nickname for me, I'll admit.

I DO hope that was intentional...
  • Since Movieweb proceeded to copy and paste my name as equally incorrect, I think I would appreciate a correction here. Thanks.

Steve-o will be in it - he was filmed by TMZ at the DMV; he said he had to get another license because he lost his old one doing a stunt for Jackass 3D.
