First up, Zhang Yimou’s sorta-remake of Blood Simple, the amazing debut feature by Joel and Ethan Coen, has a new title. Once called Amazing Tales: Three Guns, the title now seems to be The First Gun. Except that in some places, as on the upload for the trailer featured below, the title Amazing Tales: Three Guns, or some variant on it, persists. But the new name was reported by Yahoo, and they’ve got to be correct, right? So for now we’ll run with it, but don’t be too surprised if you still see the Three Guns title used in the next few months.

Now, about that trailer: we’ve got it after the jump, and it is a little bit insane. We’ve already seen some images, and they were wild, but this is over the top. You won’t recognize much Coen Brothers in it, but there’s no small amount of weird, wacky style going on.

The film isn’t quite a remake, maybe half remake and half reimagining. As you’ll see immediately, it is a period piece, and the setting is a noodle shop on the edge of a frontier in feudal China. Not so different from a bar in Texas, I suppose, but different enough. More to the point, there’s a lot more comedy in this one, and probably more overt action. Oh, and some totally different characters.

“We have added a lot of things,” said Zhang, “and changed the whole feeling [of Blood Simple]… we brought in a lot of comedic elements and changed the relationship and personalities of the characters.”

Which is for the best, really. Zhang is a great director, and the notion of him doing a pure remake of Blood Simple, even transplanted to a different time and place, we weird. This looks REALLY weird, and kind of exciting. Sony Pictures Classics will release the film in North America in 2010, but since the picture opens in China next month, hopefully we’ll know a lot more soon.

Think I'll skip this one. I'll probably be better off catching Red Cliff.

Maybe when it hits DVD I'll give this one a peek.

Yeah, I've never been a huge fan of the zany Asian flicks. Unless it's Stephen Chow.

Ok... this is about as much a remake of Blood Simple as The Life Aquatic is a remake of Moby Dick. If they were just going to do something so obviously different, they wasted whatever money they had to pay to get the rights to it.
  • Completely agree. Don't slander Blood Simple with this crap.

How can you be sure its crap from a 2 minute trailer with no subtitles? If you 've seen any of Yimou's films you should know he is not the type of director that makes crap. I have to admit that it looks weird and nothing like blood simple, but wait and see, it might be interesting.
  • The trailer itself reveals the film is going to be terrible.

But my main problem is don't call it a remake of Blood Simple; call it Pretty Robe People Blow Shit Up.

Zhang Yimou used to make movies about ordinary people in the context of Chinese society. Those were good, the fantasy garbage he's pumping out these days are unwatchable.
  • What in the holy fuck was that?!

Looks unique to me. My interest is piqued, and this trailer came along just as that article went up on Chud concerning whimsy and realism in movies and audiences negative responses to the former.

This trailer to me is just one big mess you don't even no what the story is a bout it just all over the place.

Just guessing here, but perhaps a large part of it is the fact that you don't speak Chinese?

    hahahhahaa
  • i feel like i need to rewatch blood simple again right now to forget about this.
  • As someone who's not a huge fan of Blood Simple, all I have to say is: What. The. Fuck.
