Concept Art From Tim Burton’s Unfilmed Superman Film

brainiac_header

That chap Superman sure keeps making the news but doesn’t seem to be making many movies lately, does he? The latest appearance from Jor-El Kal-El on the /Film radar is with two previously unreleased paintings Tim Burton made when planning a rather unorthodox Superman picture back in the 90s.

This was the film that was going to see Nicolas Cage as Superman and the reworking of which upset Kevin Smith’s sensibilities so much. I still quietly mourn it to this day, when reminded of it. It certainly wasn’t going to give us a Superman as we’ve seen him before, but well… obviously, we’ve already seen him like that before. Let’s see a new one, why not.

Coming up after the break, two Superman Lives pre-production paintings from Burton’s current MoMA retrospective and, random chance willing, the lavish and eminently gift-listable accompanying book.

This first picture is of Braniac, a character that Burton was supposedly looking to entrust to Pearce Brosnan.

The second picture is of… er… anybody? A big green face. Zod? Definitely not the Jude Law type Zod that fans were wanting from the proposed Superman Man of Steel. Maybe this is also Brainiac…?

MTV have a gallery that contains both these and a number of other Burton penworks from the current show.

The below image is a supposed Nicolas Cage/Superman Lives costume test and started doing the rounds a little while ago, originating at a Japanese Burton fansite. Again, the visual style is not any Superman we’ve ever seen before. Purist fans have been outraged by every single choice Burton made, while I’m actually quite sad he didn’t get to see his vision to the screen.

Oh, if only films were produced as prolifically (ie. cheaply) as comic books and Elseworlds and Bizarro versions of characters could be created all over the place. Without the urgent need to land squarely in the most popular conception of a character’s style because the film is a once in a three-years chance to tick the boxes, we could be treated to all sorts of curious, beautiful oddities.

It would have been really cool if they had, like, a giant spider in the third act.

I don't see how any of this is any weirder then Tim Burton's concept art for the Batman movie he made (I remember drawings of the Joker with his eyeballs hanging out of the sockets). He draws weird shit and the point of conceptual artwork is too think outside the box until your reach something that you can distill down into something workable.

Besides, I can't imagine anything worse then Superman Returns.

Some sick and twisted part of me would actually LOVE to see the Kevin Smith/Tim Burton/Nic Cage Superman flick get made. Like RIGHT NOW.

Get Wahlberg in there somehow and you've got a perfect storm. (Again.)

Sure, I'd love to see a REALLY GREAT Supes flick get made instead. But since WB will probably just screw it up royal anyway... why not go all the way?

It's a shame this movie never happened, it would have been one of the best superhero movies of all time! Up there next to Batman & Robin and Catwoman!

"Oh, if only films were produced as prolifically (ie. cheaply) as comic books and Elseworlds and Bizarro versions of characters could be created all over the place."

SO TRUE. If only we lived in a world where they could film some epic mini-series for "Red Son".

Well said! I couldn't agree more.
  • This would have been Cooler to see. Now this is the Superman movie that should have been made.... It Looks different and very unexpected like Batman 1989. I would prefer seeing this more than Superman Returns. Superman Returns was so predictable and it didn't have it's own vision!! Nicholas Cage was hungry to play Superman at the time. His acting would have been out of this world. He would of gave people a different light of Superman.

that picture of cage made my stomach turn

I underlined the supposed for a reason.
  • We need someone to show us the action figure to confirm once and for all (apart from what our eyes seem to tell us).

Umm, I was bummed to hear that Tim Burton was in New York today signing autographs at his new display...since I'm all the way in Chicago, but i'll probably still get the book. In other news....no horror movie footage has ever disturbed me quite the way this pic of Nic Cage did, please no more.
  • waqman
I think as dumb as Cage looks as Superman, I think this movie would have been soooo much more interesting than Superman Returns. That tried so hard to emulate the old films and it sucked badly as well.

Superman deserves a good movie. I'd have loved to see Burton's very unconventional ideas for it, would have been entertaining.

    LOL I can't believe I didn't realize that's some shop job.
  • That Nicholas Cage pic gave my eyes cancer.

Hahaha, I agree. My finger couldn't scroll down the page fast enough.

The costume appears to be heavily influenced from Superman's costume in the graphic novel Kingdom Come.
  • mangoshakes
this would be interesting. except for nic cage as superman (not referring to the 'pic'). Just put sooomething out. i wanna see Supes.

thank god this abortion never happened.
  • Dave
I'd have that it was the abortion that took care of the fetus.
  • moose
maybe Nic Cage was Bizzaro, not Superman
  • [A]
@Goobity: probably to attract different readers. The Art of Tim Burton book might've been interesting mostly to his fans and/or goth chicks. This one's more about Superman than any other thing..
  • Jorge
That "costume test" is nothing more than Nic Cage's head 'shopped onto an action-figure body.
  • Christopher
No. It isn't. It's a BTS photo from a screen test for a sculpted muscle suit designed by Steve Johnson. the paint-job around the neck is quick and dirty and would have been smoothed out with latex during filming. I'm not defending the design, only the veracity of the image. It is NOT an action figure or a Photoshop job.
  • I think that's a maquette, not an action figure.

And I too thought it was photoshopped, couldn't put my finger on it until I saw your comment. Here's my question... okay, they photoshopped it... why'd they use THAT picture of Cage?!? Was Superman going to be drunk??
  • Brad
I'm glad I'm not the only one who caught that terrible photoshop job.
  • freemachine
Thank God this never happened! It's bad enough Burton ruined Planet of the Apes, Willy Wonka, and now Alice.
  • Dr_Gonzo
He's not all bad. I really like Sleepy Hollow and Mars Attacks and of course Batman. Planet of the Apes was average, but there were things about it I liked.
  • You should probably wait to include Alice in the list until it's out.. just saying.
  • Mecline
While I dislike pretty much everything the man has made, Planet of the Apes was far from ruined.
  • freemachine
Hey Ape, how is going? I like your fur, that looks really great. Say hi to your mutha for me OK?
  • fanboy_d
    Well played.

  • freemachine
I have two words for you: Mark Wahlberg.
  • Tetsuo_Man
    Way to be wrong freemachine....
  • Mecline
His performance was hardly terrible and definatly wasn't enough to ruin the entire film.
  • TotallyNotNick
Up yours Goob, I thought this was super interesting
  • Goobity
Good for you. Go get the book that contains these images, and read up on it here:

It was posted earlier today. Sorry you had to make an effort to scroll.
  • evilninjax
Is the superman photo in the book? The earlier post on the book doesn't mention it at all.
  • Goobity
This is news? Why not include it in today's post about the Art of Tim Burton Book?
Are we going to get a post tomorrow titled "Breaking News! The Beetlejuice that Might Have Been!"
