Stephen Susco to Write Hack/Slash

Hack/Slash

The potential film version of the comic book Hack/Slash has been making news for over a year now. Two reasons. One, it’s classic fanbait: hot girl plus skimpy clothes plus violence. And two, it was originally handed to screenwriter Justin Marks, the guy who became blog fodder for having a bunch of high-profile writing gigs with no produced credits. Then the Marks-penned Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li came out, and suddenly we weren’t writing about Marks nearly as often. As is so often the case, the lousiness of Street Fighter may or may not actually have anything to do with the Marks script, but with nothing else bearing his name it’s harder to give him the benefit of the doubt.

After being announced, Hack/Slash was passed from director Todd Lincoln to Fredrik Bond. Now there’s a report that a new screenwriter is on board, as well. In retrospect, when you think like a production company, hiring the same guy that is writing the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre for Twisted Pictures probably seems like a slam dunk.

Bloody Disgusting reports that Stephen Susco has been given a mandate to hack and slash. What they don’t say is whether this is a rewrite of the previous Justin Marks script, which was said to play up a Shaun of the Dead-style comedy/horror fusion, or a start from scratch effort. Given the stuff Susco has written so far and is attached to (the two Grudge remakes, Texas Chainsaw, The Butcherhouse Chronicles, the other Brian Cox movie called Red) I could see it going either way. He could be adding more serious horror to the Marks script, or starting afresh to more fundamentally change the balance of horror and humor in the adaptation.

Hack/Slash was devised by Tim Seeley and features Cassie Hack, “an attractive, yet tough-as-nails, fearless loudmouth” who was a final girl-style survivor of a violent attack and now hunts slashers and killers with her partner, Vlad. No casting has been announced so far, so feel free to continue arguing the merits and drawbacks of fancasting Eliza Dushku in the comments below.

please keep megan fox and eliza dushku as far away from this project as possible! hack/slash warrants a real actreess in the role of cassie. please find an unknown so this role can be her own w/o any baggage!
  • so who would you recommend for the role? I can't really say, since I've never read it but I plan to check it out.
  • I can see Sasha Grey as Cassie Hack.
  • Hollywood would never cast a porn star in a role in a big budget Hollywood movie that's supposed to be audience-friendly. I don't think some Americans can embrace a porn star as an actress.

    I'm not really sure, though.
  • I accidentally hit Like on your comment, whoops.

Sasha Grey has done independent films, and I've never met a comic fan who didn't know, and didn't like, Grey. Heck, there's a "petition" going around asking for her to be X-23 if they ever have the character in a movie. So, for a comic book movie that's relatively unknown to anyone else, Grey could work. Furthermore, Hack/Slash, if done right, should be rated R, which will already alienate many typical moviegoers.

I just don't think having a known porn star — who has also had non-porn roles — would break this project.
  • I tried to reply to your longer comment below but the button isn't there. Anyway, you have a good argument there. what, some people want her to play X-23????? but can she really act?
  • Yeah, a lot of people want her as X-23. I don't see it, but whatever. As Cassie Hack, though... She could look the part, for sure. She's a decent actress, outside of the porno she does. She was in "The Girlfriend Experience" and did rather well in her role, even if she was a call girl.

i can see it. I love Hack/Slash so the movie should be R-Rated. So they wouldn't have to worry about a porn star image as a main Character.

Micheal Clarke Duncan might make a good Vlad, though. Might.
  • I'm not familiar with Hack/Slash. I'm gonna try to look for a copy this week.
  • RussFischer
I'm not much familiar with it, either. Premise sounds awful to me, but it has a serious following. Going to inquire with a good friend who works for a comics distributor, see what he has to say. Might grab and issue or two.
  • jp
Premise may sounf awful, butif you're a fan of pulpy 80's slasher movies and self-aware metahumor, then you should give some of the books a read. It's just a really fun book that caters to the geek and horror fanboy crowd.
  • RussFischer
It's that catering to the geek/fanboy crowd that makes me want to give it a pass, actually. I find that stories existing specifically as fan service tend don't have enough under the surface to keep my attention for very long. When I hear the premise I envision a couple of violent SNL sketches and not much more. But like I said, I'll check it out and give it a legit chance.
  • Danisgod6491
Yea, maybe you should stick to New Avengers and Tiny Titans. Becuse this isn't a comic for little boys such as yourself.
  • Paul
It's not awful at all, it's very original.

    NO MEGAN FOX. PLEASE!!!
  • MonsterKilledThePilot
I think Kat Dennings said in an interview she wanted to play this character. I'd be down with that.
  • Dysthymia83
She's said that on Twitter too. I think she'd be a great choice.
  • Tetsuo_Man
    No.
  • jasonb26
a young jennifer connely would have been ideal, but i'd be happy with an unknown.
  • existenz
This sounds a lot like Domino, though I'm sure the stories are very different. But Cassie/Vlad reminds me of Keira Knightly/Mickey Rourke. I have to say that Domino was such a bad movie I turned it off halfway through. Hopefully Hack/Slash (if it is ever made) is better.
  • Tetsuo_Man
Not really.... Hack/Slash has more in common with Behind the Mask in that it's a story set in the horror movie universe. Cassie survives a slasher and basically goes around hunting them with this really deformed looking giant. It's a great comic...
  • thelastknowngod
i could see Mila Kunis doing a pretty good job.

i agree though, no Megah Fox, no Eliza Dushku. Sasha Grey could work but id rather see Mila Kunis.
  • Tetsuo_Man
I think Sasha Grey would be nice... she's got the whole pale & black hair that Cassie has, plus the whole pornstar stars in serial killer movie would be a nice headline. Mila Kunis would cost to much to cast, plus I'd doubt she'd be up for horror after her consistent comedy gigs.
  • I'll definitely watch this!
  • angie
Mila Kunis would be fucking perfection. No MEGAN FOX! I do like her a lot but honestly it's not going to be good for the film. You need to put actresses that will favor the movie.
