Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Back in July, it was hinted that Chicago helmer Rob Marshall might be directing the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, but we haven’t heard anything since… until now.

At a DGA screening of Nine, Marshall confirmed that he would be helming the Disney sequel. When asked what he would be doing next, Marshall responded “ya’know, it’s something that I was offered and never in the world thought I would do but then I was like ‘why not?’… I’m doing ‘Pirates of the Caribbean….” According to the AICN report, Marshall also mentioned that he had met with Johnny Depp, and that they are both excited to work together.

The fourth film will be based on Tim Powers’ pirate novel On Stranger Tides which was optioned by Disney years ago. The novel tells the story of Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth. Here’s the plot of the novel:

Puppeteer John Chandagnac, bound for Jamaica to recover stolen money from his uncle, becomes Jack Shandy after pirates attack his ship and force him to join their crew. Shandy’s struggle to accept his new life grounds the story for readers, even as Blackbeard and vodun magicians whisk everyone away to dreamlike lands where the Fountain of Youth itself awaits. The chaotic sea battles sing, though at times key events happen so quickly that they get lost in the shuffle as Jack tries to comprehend where he’s going and what’s at stake.

Isn't he the one who did the Mummy 3?

No, he directed Nine and Chicago. Also Memoirs of a Gesha

The man put D-Day Lewis in a musical. He's clearly a mad genius. Mad genius director + Jack Sparrow could be awesome...
  • The only one that didn't work for me was Burn After Reading. I liked elements of it a lot, just wished it'd paid off better at the end. Same could be said for No Country. Very enjoyable works, but often at the end I'm left wondering, what was the point? Would it have been that hard to give the story a point besides just giving the characters something to do for 2 hours? Still love their work, just a minor pet peeve I have with some of the stories.

You are clearly commenting on the wrong news
  • Interesting. I'm glad the Orlando Bloom storyline will be over, that is for sure.
  • See, I just read that headline as "You will be watching the next PotC film"

Why dont they drop POC as a trilogy, but invite the whole cast back, and create a pirates movie again ... but this time base it on Monkey Island! How cool would it be to see Johnny Depp as Guybrush Threepwood!! :)
