The Lovely Bones

I keep looking for something that will sell me on The Lovely Bones. Once upon a time, Peter Jackson’s name would have been enough. It’s not that King Kong changed that, but between the problems with Kong and the fact that the story in this new film doesn’t grab me (based on what I know about it) I’m in a ‘wait and see’ holding pattern. More problematic is that the current US trailer for his new film actively turned me off. I see why people liked it, but the tone felt like an unsuccessful bid to get back to the feeling of Heavenly Creatures.

So I’m watching for each new batch of footage with some anticipation. Now there’s a new French trailer for the film, but all it really does is replicate the long US version in a shorter time frame.

It is weird, that with the film set to open limited in less than a month (Dec 11 in a few markets, to qualify for Oscar), we’ve seen so little of it. What is this, Forgotten Silver? (Fantastic movie there, by the way.) Would have thought Paramount and Dreamworks would have stared pushing the film hard by this point, but maybe we’ve got another week or two to wait.

In the meantime there’s this French clip, which is fairly low-res and really doesn’t offer anything new. There might be one or two very brief lines in the voiceover that we haven’t heard before, but other than that there are no surprises here. Too bad about that; I feel like it’ll just take one little clip that truly recalls the Peter Jackson of Heavenly Creatures and I’ll be utterly sold.

If you’ve missed the details, they go like this: Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens adapted the script from Alice Seybold’s novel. Jackson directs Mark Wahlberg, Susan Sarandon, Rachel Weisz, Stanley Tucci and Saoirse Ronan in the story of a murdered girl’s spirit as it looks over both the actions of her murderer and her grieving family.

Post-LOTR, Jackson pretty much has carte blanche to do as he please. I do find it weird too how little/slow the publicity campaign has been for some major releases (e.g. Ninja Assassin)

I don't really care about who made it and who stars in it, I just wanna see if they've destroyed it completely or if they've actually managed to make an OK adaption. Although I do think it's a little weird that Peter Jackson made it, I don't really see it as his type of movie, but like what do I know, I've only see the LOTR trilogy.

The book is far from a literary masterpiece, it has major pacing issues as well as some other problems. I guess there will always be fanboys expecting the worst though.

So just because the book's not a masterpiece I shouldn't be excited about it?
  • clarencesomerset
No, but mind you, the film could be better at dealing with the subject and theme. And Jackson's Heavenly Creatures had that intimacy that kinda fits into the book here.

Well, that's what I'm hoping for, but a lot of times that's not what happens when they make movies out of books.

The book really wasn't that good.
The opening chapter where she gets killed (that's really not a spoiler) was terribly written and just blundered through it.
The rest of the book is okay, but it just seems to go nowhere, it's very confused in itself and seems to lack any solid direction, that and there's the whole "Whoops, I'm alive again in someone elses body, not fuck me pl0x!", which was really lame.
Marky Mark is terribly miscast, as much as I love Ryan Gosling, he was a little miscast (albeit, not nearly as much as Marky Mark) too. I think Chris Meloni would have done a far better job. The movie looks pretty good, hopefully it's not as ham-fisted as the book. Peter Jackson is still yet to top Braindead.

Even if this fails on every level (doubtful) it'll still be worth watching for the cinematography alone. Gorgeous.

first Of when i try to sign in via face book for commenting it trys to connect me to cinema Blend?

Anywho... I read this book in prep for the film, Damn I hated it, after a brillant start it just turned to sentimental drivel...

Is it just me, or are the voices pretty high pitched in this trailer?
  • Yea it does, seems like the trailer is sped up or in like fast forward. Hopefully, we get an actual new version of the trailer sometime soon, its premiering in front of the Queen of England at the end of the month so hopefulyl around then.
