superman_returns_returns

Superman Returns is not a film known for being butchered at the hands of the studio. Indeed, to the best of my knowledge, the theatrical release actually was a Bryan Singer-approved cut and absolutely free of any controversy (well, this kind of controversy at least). This hasn’t stopped some dedicated fans from launching a campaign to get a new cut of the film released on DVD and Blu-ray.

They’ve even gone so far as to cut a trailer for this non-existent release, which you can see embedded below the break, as well as dream up a whole set of special features they’d like to see on the disc.

A good portion of this trailer uses optical zooms and pans across what look like images from tie-in books, trading cards and other bits of Superman Returns bric-a-brac. Other bits are from the film as it stands and I think there are also shots from the deleted scenes as featured on the current DVD.

I’m sure they haven’t asked Bryan Singer for the use of his name in this campaign, and I’d be interested in hearing his response to these efforts.

Personally, I’d love to see this odd version of the film with everything jammed back in. Like the multiple cuts available in the Blade Runner box, for example, it would serve as a fascinating historical artifact if not necessarily the best possible version of the film. Do people gravitate towards the longest version of a film as the definitive version, irrespective of it’s merit or directorial approval?

What these Returns fans don’t have, I think, is a hope in heck of seeing their dream come true. What they do have is a passionately constructed, nicely designed resource for other fans looking to see what might be missing from the theatrical version of Singer’s hugely undervalued film. That’s the immediate value here, I think, this little archive of material probing into the film’s deleted scenes. It’s not all hard facts on offer, unfortunately, but the conjecture doesn’t spoil the wealth of images and info that the site does offer.

I must say that it's EXTREMELY assumptive and downright rude of them to call it "The Bryan Singer Cut".

It actually really gets my back up for some reason
  • red son
I agree. The movie released in theaters IS the Bryan Singer cut. It is a slap in Singer's face for these fanboys to think they know the material and vision better than Singer. He cut the parts that were weak or didn't work and released the strongest film he could. Singer himself has said the theatrical cut IS the director's cut. Just because these fanboys don't like the film doesn't mean it would be any better with the weak parts Singer didn't like put in the film. It is almost guaranteed that the film will be worse with the dead parts put in. Singer has already told us that he made the best film he could and we've already seen it. It is extremely rude of these fanboys to presume Singer is lying or stupid.
  • Tetsuo_Man
The fanboys DO know the material better then Singer. That's why they are the FANBOYS. Singer's movie was so bad it actually RUINED our chances of seeing another Superman film for the next 5 years at the least.
  • krackajap
Cause we really need another Superman movie right?

Superman Returns was one of the best films of 2006, not just a great superhero movie. Legal issues and box office returns have halted a sequel.
  • righteousplaid
I think people need to move on.
  • sammyjankis
Sadly, that will not make a sub par movie any better.
  • NickNewman
Brendon: Dark Knight no, Superman Returns yes? Alright then...
  • will1138
Returns was a good film, but I'd concentrate on getting the more action packed sequel made that singer has spoken about.
  • [A]
The only really *bad* thing about Returns is Supes Jr. And Superman just lifting cars and rocks haha -- but the next would've been more action-ridden, I'm sure.
  • Guest
The child plotline was one of the best things about it. For a comic book movie to slavishly follow what's gone before would be redundant. It added a new dynamic.
  • Cineprog
Im sorry but this trailer is not very good, don't like the still photos at the beging of the trailer, they look like traiding cards or somthing.. the best thing about the trailer is the superman theme music from the original film by John Williams.
  • Steve_Kasan
    I personally enjoyed Superman Returns.
I know the arguments of "there is no action", the story is just dumb--real estate, and he is a stalker. And also the kid, but it worked for me.
I found the film to be complete and will defend it.
This campaign as most have suggested is a lost cause. Maybe when the sequel does ever come out from Singer there will be a director's cut.
  • Meh. Why waste time with this bad movie? Just watch the original w/ Christopher Reeve. Far superior in many regards.
  • Solid
It's not just about the movie's quality. The film WAS a phenomenon in my mind that marked peak point in the power of the internet (I've been an internet nerd for a looooooooooooooooong time) which will in the future likely lead to a greater understanding of what instantaneous communication between all people around the world can possibly do. Unfortunately for many of us from back then we saw a lot of its bad side. Just saying it's not so simple as "Oh the movie sucks" since at the time some of us really loved it, A LOT. I still love the parts of it that work.
  • greggorybasore
What did this movie have to do with the peak point in the power of the internet?
  • Solid
Oh I'll explain then... I'm an old man now, been using the web since I was 16, back when it was still dialup. For a lot of us it began with star wars the phantom menaces genesis... which was the start of ALL of this, these film blogs, harry knowel's, etc... I doubt any of this would exist if star wars didn't bring back film's mass appeal to a lot of us. I used to read magazines to get film news. Not anymore... and I was there since the beginning, witnessing a lot of the talk about the new star wars films back then. The net was a different place... more innocent, a more civilized age. Needless to say, things changed. The internet GREW UP and now film is big business online, plants are everywhere, shit like that. Industries are like greek god's it's been said, don't mess with them, so when supey returns came along really it woke me up more than ever to the incredible minds at work behind these big ass movies and what they're willing to do to WIN these retarded film battles we have over whether a movie is good or bad. Must be political science majors or some shit... but yeah the net isn't what it was when I started using it, not anymore.
  • freemachine
Other than Superboy, I really like this film. It is a 100x better than most garbage out there...*coughs*...Transformers... I hope the studio moves forward with Man of Steel soon. They'll get my $10.
  • jordimusprime
Here's a feature they could put on, an apology for making Superman boring and lame.
  • ghost
Still can't explain a sequel where the climax includes Supes lifting an island made of kryptonite(with a shard of it in him no less) when the previous film has him being brought to his knees by a kryptonite ring across a room.
  • It wasn't "an island made out of kryptonite." There was a giant chunk of kryptonite that was continuing to grow, and Superman had tunneled FAR BELOW it, at a safe enough distance from it (at first).

The higher he lifted the mass, the bigger the kryptonite grew, and the closer it got to him — and his strength eventually gave out.
  • Also it was very diluted Kryptonite. As Lex says, the crystals take on the qualities of the minerals around it. So after it was in the water, it got the Kryptonite, sure, but also all the other stuff dissolved in the ocean.
  • Tetsuo_Man
Why are you guys arguing the logistics of the island. Just admit that it was completely lame and move on.
  • bomberman
this is an extremely bad trailer
  • If a plane rescue is the best you cna do for a Superhero flick, your movie got problems. Seriously, Returns was awful. Warner should have gone the reboot route just like with Batman.
  • jasonb26
i just feel that in the middle of all this comic-book-film craze, and the advantage we now have with technology & film, that of all the characters out there, SUPERMAN deserves to be represented with a significant current franchise.

the character isn't even my favorite, but i can't deny that he is as important as any other character out there. i'd love to see singers 'MOS', but i think it might just be better if we started from scratch with a new trilogy.

for the love of god - KEEP WELLING OR ROUTH (!!!!!!!), but superman definitely deserves a new batch of films. [my vote is for welling...but that's just me & an endless debate :) ]

it's a little frustrating to see titles like 'lobo', 'venom' or even 'sgt. rock' getting green lights, while the last son of krypton sits in neutral, you know? it's nice to see the lesser known's branch out and gain more awareness, but it just seems wrong - to me - that of all the titles, this one is getting the cold shoulder.
  • Tetsuo_Man
The problem is... Routhe looks like Christopher Reeve, yes, but not Superman. He's not buff (at all), he's sorta girly looking, and his voice doesn't have that buffness to it. The only Superman film we will ever see made, is a complete and utter reboot.
  • mpezz
Sorry, geeks. No matter how hard you try you will never get anyone to care about Superman Returns.
  • papasanchez
I would love to see singers sequel but I have a horrible feeling that if it was made superboy might be over played a little.

At the end of the day I don't think singer will get another crack at it. Unfortunately. And with strict legalities hanging over the characters just now I doubt very much that we will see another superman film for a long time.

    It's sad, but probably true.
  • Abandon all hope ye who enter here.
Honestly I don't think there's any way to make this movie better, but man there sure are ways in making it work.
The problem is that we as audiences have already seen a man fly and believed it. Its now up to the people in Hollywood to make us believe again, like with Batman. Its no easy task but it can be done.
    Here's hoping that it can.
  • crazymrtibbs
I have always argued for Returns just as I argued for Batman Begins; it offers a beautiful spring board opportunity for a "now" continuity. I loved both films (near equally) and acknowledged their faults. Returns set up everything so well for an amazing story arc, and really pick your poison. Between Spacey as (my opinion) a definitive and serious Luthor, with Doomsday, or even Metallo, something of epic proportions was seriously passed up.
  • MonsterKilledThePilot
I agree. But I think they were saving the other villains for the sequel. Just like Nolan saved The Joker for The Dark Knight. Having Luthor in Returns was an excellent decision.
  • Tetsuo_Man
That wasn't Luthor... that was "real-estate" luthor. Real Lex Luthor is a badass mofo who already owns billions of dollars. That fact alone made me wonder if Singer had even read the comics, or if he was just basing his Superman knowledge off the past films.
  • crazymrtibbs
I am fairly sure Nolan didn't "save" the character for a sequel, he just did a great job of wrapping up continuity for the franchise.
  • Superman Returns was a phenomenal film, but I wouldn't want a longer cut. Singer's cut is near perfect. Leave it be, and move on to 'Superman VI'
  • guardrail
    Boring theatrical release, boring trailer.

And let us not forget Kate Bosworth as Louis Lane. I mean come on.
  • Wow. Pretty sweet trailer! I still think that Singer's cut is perfect as is (no need for a longer cut), but the trailer was well done.
  • starscream9289
I liked Superman Returns. Even with its flaws I managed to enjoy it.
  • fanboy_d
    I JUST WANT A SEQUEL!!!
  • mangoshakes
i enjoy superman returns. except luthor and the kid. i don't think it's as bad as some people think. but dangit i want a superman movie. he deserves SOMETHING.
  • I loved Superman Returns more than most, but I acknowledge it's flaws and realize it probably wasn't the Superman movie we needed at the time. So while this would be great, I'd rather they just bring us a new movie with a burly brawl with a supervillain.
  • OneFourFiveFelix
So, I'm guessing this is a fanedit.
Y'know, those are usually great. Check 'em out sometime.

Got the Batman Begins Dark Cut (fanedit) and it was great. Changed alot of things. The context and stuff. You could say it's a director's cut.
Oh, and yes. Believe it or not, they made Katie Holmes decent.
  • neverfearimhere
Let it go, man. Just...let it go.

    http://www.neverinamillionyearswillthishappen.org
  • I would love it! Superman Returns is fantastic! Minus the kid. Plus Bryan Singer is a rockin’ Director and I’d love to see his original Donner influenced vision of the film. But I cant wait for it.Thanks for sharing this information.
  • neverfearimhere
So let me see if I got this right; you campaigning for a movie that was

1)At best, like a two-and-half-hour episode of The Maury Povich Show. (I had sex with you five years ago and you left the planet; are you the father of my star-crossed love child baby? Oh, and by the way, while you were gone, I hooked up with Cyclops, cause his last girlfriend tuned into a Phoenix, which I didn't think was possible because Phoenix is the name of a state, and she was kind of a skinny chick, so....) At worst? It's exactly that.
    2) Had literally two action sequences [cool ones, but still. TWO!!!]
3)Bryan Singer doing his best Richard Donner impression, with moderate sucess
4)Lex Luthor trying to take over the world thorugh real esate, because when you've tried it for the 1,000,000th time, the 1,000,000th and one time should be the charm, right? Right?!

And you want to make that LONGER?

  • Now, only if this could have released along side with the movie and not after some years. Oh well, we can use this for marketing of the next movie (if it comes out)
  • corysims
I wouldn't call this petition a disservice to Singer's cut of the film. If you've read the complete script of Superman Returns, you know then that the film that was released is a truncated version, approved by Singer, that's missing some key components that take the overall theme that Singer was pushing in the film to its completion.

The first act is what got the most reworked and that's mainly what this petition is asking for. If you've seen the deleted scenes on the disc out now, plus if you add the 10 minute "Return to Krypton" sequence, the whole film is different.

Fans just really want to see Singer's true opening act to this film. For them, it would solve a lot of problems they had with the thing.
  • Chris
People make comments about Lex Luthor's 'real estate' plan in Superman Returns but wasn't that the plot of Superman The Movie which everyone loves? The main problem with Superman the movies vs Superman the comics is that the first film was made to be accessible to general audiences. The comics have much more flamboyant super-villiams which some audiences wouldn't accept. I think the Fantastic 4 has the same problems some of the characters from the comics would be laughed off screen if not done right. As for an extended cut I don't think it's needed - thats what deleted scenes as for unless it's LOTR.
  • Rick Durkin
Once again /Film is late on picking up a piece of news that has been on the net for months. That being said, including their negative take on this requested version of the film, even John Ottman himself indicated in an interview with Jeff Bond that this version of the film would some day be available on DVD. This is hardly some fan request out of turn. Speaking of which the return to Krypton sequence was completed but not scored though the cue was written. The original opening of the film including the drawing of the curtain, film reel flashback of scenes from Donner's film were also dropped.
