Even though legendary sci-fi author Ray Bradbury is ready to say “To hell with the Internet!”, it appears he’s willing to give television a bit more leeway. The author has signed on to develop a six-hour miniseries which will feature six of his short stories, each by a different director. The adapted stories aren’t known yet since each director will get to choose their favorite. The project is currently being shopped around to different networks—though if SyFy doesn’t snap this up, ima have to choke an Ewok.

Bradbury has an extensive list of short story work, dating from 1938 to this year, so the possibility of choices is fairly wide. I’m more familiar with his novels than his shorts, so I can’t really predict which would be best for adaptation (though as always, we’d love your suggestions in the comments). What I can say for sure is that the hour-long format can be very good for short stories, and I hope we see future projects similar to this.

Speaking of sci-fi, it seems that SyFy is soon premiering a new five-episode comedy series, Outer Space Astronauts. The series “is a futuristic comedy about eight military misfits who journey to the far reaches of the galaxy on board the O.S.S. Oklahoma.” The series is exec produced by David O. Russell (?!), and is the brainchild of frequent Russell collaborator Russell Barrett.

Says SyFy exec VP Mark Stern:

Syfy fans have never seen animation quite like this before. Out of the basement and mind of show creator, Russell Barrett, he’s delivered a funny and fresh take on the future of underground and homegrown animation today.

The series was a part of a Sci-Fi reader poll a few years ago where the network asked their readers if the series should be greenlit. I’m predicting the “never before seen” type of animation will resemble something along the lines of an Adult Swim series.

Finally, we’ve learned today that crazy things are going on over at Current TV. The new Current CEO, Mark Rosenthal, is making sweeping changes across the network, and is specifically aiming at killing most of their in-house short form content. Consequently, they’re laying off 25% of their staff, or about 80 workers. According to a TechCrunch source, the situation is a “major bloodbath…across all departments”.

The network will focus on traditional half-hour and hour-long content acquired from other sources. The changeover makes sense considering Rosenthal’s MTV roots. Despite how it may seem, Current reports that the layoffs weren’t about saving money, and that this year will be their most profitable. Hurray?

Honestly, Current should probably get out of the TV network business altogether and focus their energy on their online component, as well as distributing video Revision 3-style. But Rosenthal, being a product of old media, probably won’t be making that move anytime soon.

"There Will Come Soft Rains" from The Martian Chronicles is an excellent short story. It would be interesting to see how a director would handle that material considering there would be no actors, besides the voice of the house and the dog.

That's exactly what I was going to suggest. "There Will Come Soft Rains" has a lot of great imagery you can pick up on the first read through, but also has depth and complexity to keep you coming back for more. I've had a new realization every time I've read it.

i hope syfy doesn't pick this up, their production values are generally quite bad. amc or fx would be nice. it's an added bonus that an ewok dies if this happens, could you choke a gungan too devindra?

I miss his old TV Show... in fact, I miss TV Shows with that format. A new cast and story every week.

We had to read The Veldt when I was in sixth grade... it was pretty good. There was another one that focused on a 7 year rain in Mars... it would rain for seven years and only stop for a single day. I've not been able to find the title to it.

You mean "All Summer in a Day?"
  • CurrentTV was the closest thing to NPR TV on any channel. And now it's going to be MTVifyed? Disappointment.
  • Boo!!!! Current is my absolute favorite channel. I hope they don't plan on replacing all the pods with stupid half-hour shows. Current is probably the only channel that seems like it was made just for me. Now some bigwig from MTV is gonna' storm in and ruin everything that made it great.

Just as long as they don't mess with Infomania or The Rotten Tomatoes Show, I guess I'll be okay.
  • solarguardian
    don't forget the supershow!

but seriously, i'm going to be pissed off if they get rid of the pods. that's what made the channel so unique.
  • I actually sent a letter to feedback@current.com telling them to stand up for themselves and not to be pushed around by an out-of-touch geezer. Think they'll listen?
  • AlexB
Wow, I...temp part time for Current's SuperNews. And this is news to me. Uhh...nuts.
  • Kyle C.
That sucks about Current TV, they were the best channel for actual news and a great outlet for young talented journalists. Now an MTV douchebag is gonna fuck it all up. Man, the end of good journalism ends with Current TV.
I agree they should just focus online now but that doesn't seem feasable.

Ive only watched CurrentTV a few times, but what I did see was OK. Rotten Tomatoes was pretty good, if a little forced in their line delivery. The other shows seemed pretty much like high quality youtube videos from what I saw.
  • Aaron Stokes
Weren't they going to adapt six of his short stories into a movie? I remember Zack Snyder being attached to direct at least one...

Anyway, they better adapt Kaleidoscope, definitely my favorite.

    PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

    The April Witch.

I love him so but have never seen any film project which has done him justice. I believe my other favorites have already been mangled, The Sound of Thunder, The Foghorn, the stories in the Martian Chronicles.

Did I mention The April Witch?
