While signing copies of his new novel Under the Dome in a Dundalk, Maryland Walmart last night, Stephen King also took part in a decent-length, rapid-fire Q&A that has already been posted to YouTube. You can see the whole thing below the break, or leave it up to me to tell you which bits and pieces I found the most interesting.

  • King says early on in the clip that he “thinks” Under the Dome is “actually” going to be a HBO series. There’s no more info than that, and none more out there so far, but watch this space.
  • When asked if he’d continue the Dark Tower saga, King says that he has one more book to write and it will come between Wizard and Glass and Wolves of the Calla. Don’t forget that we only just reported how JJ Abrams has stepped away from the proposed Dark Tower movie.

  • King promises that his upcoming American Vampire comic series “aint much like Twilight“.
  • There are no plans for an adaptation for King’s Insomnia.
  • King has himself just finished a screenplay for Cell so “maybe”, he says, “it will be done. And I got so many complaints about the end of the book that I changed everything”. Back in the Summer, we reported than John Harrison was writing a version of Cell for a TV miniseries and it’s both possible that King has co-written with him or simply superceded him. I’m still mourning the scrapped Eli Roth version.

The video was found at Dread Central, who also published another little scrap of Dark Tower info from King’s messageboard:

Stephen has given me permission to pass along that he has an idea for a new Dark Tower book, the working title of which will be The Wind Through the Keyhole. He has not yet started this book and anticipates that it will be a minimum of eight months before he is able to begin writing it.

Oh, it’s a busy time in King land. I only wish somebody had asked about the return of Carrie: The Musical.

Would love for HBO to do a Stephen King series using andy of his material. So Make IT Happen HBO! Can not wait for The Pacific, by the way.
  • Lenny
I loved the Cell so my fingers are crossed.
May have to read Under the Dome as well.
  • Is the "Under the Dome" book even out yet? You know you've made it when tv series and movies are planned for material that hasn't even hit the public. That being said I am looking forward to watching Under the Dome on HBO :)
  • Toaster27
Yep it came out a few days ago, I'm 50 pages in out of about 1100 and it's been pedal to the floor so far.
  • edc3
it also came out as a comic.
    a few years ago.
    by completely unrelated creators.

called 'girls' by the luna bros.
  • Maybe I am crazy, but didnt stephen king retire about 7 years ago?
  • Toaster27
No lol, I'm pretty sure I recall him saying he was doin the big R after he wrapped up The Dark Tower series. I'm thinking he feels to keep goin so his son doesn't start to outwrite him lol, joking of course.
  • The Iron Avenger
After he got hit by that car he was going to but ended up recovering enough to where he wanted to keep writing.
  • dukeoffearl
wasn't this the plot of the Simpson's movie?
  • Roland21
You are like the thousand people who ask it! Stop trolling and read the book, you will see that is very different.
  • dukeoffearl
nah, I think you've just seen me ask it a 1000 times.

Instead of a flustered non-answer urging me to read a novel, can Ijust get a short answer finally?

Stephen King started a manuscript for this book in 1976 I believe, under a different title, "The Cannibals". The book ended up getting shelved and incompleted, then he returned to the concept and completely rewrote it as "Under the Dome".

THe plot synopsis is released and people begin comparing it to the plot of The Simposon's movie (yes there's a big dome over a town, but does the average person with marginal thinking power really think a Stephen King book is going to be similar to an animated comedy?). King and his publisher react by posting a few hundred pages of "The Cannibals" on his website to reassure people that he had the idea long before The Simpsons even existed.

Please leave the Dark Tower alone. I love the series...but he ended it correctly and should leave it that way.

The new Dark Tower comics are doing an excellent job of telling more of the story and keeping fans happy.

And FYI the Wizard and the Glass was set before Roland started his quest (unless you say he was always on the quest) and tells of his first mission whereas Wolves of Calla is part of the main story involving Roland, Eddie, Jake and Susan....so there are many many untold years in between including the first half of the Dark Tower book series....so that really doesn't tell us much. Maybe he meant between Wizard and the Glass and The Gunslinger Born.
  • MonsterKilledThePilot
I dont think he's ending it again. He's just 'filling in' a gap so to speak.
  • Drumdawg21
Wizard and Glass isn't completely based in the past. If you remember he is telling Eddie, Jake, and Susan the story of his first mission. So there is story before and after he tells the Ka-tet about his past. That's what he means about the book being between Wizard and Glass and Wolves of the Calla. The new book will take place after he's told Eddie, Jake, and Susan about his first mission but before they get to Calla Bryn Sturgis.
  • The Iron Avenger
I'd be down for some more Dark Tower. While "Wolves" and "Sussanah" weren't particularly good, the final book was astounding, especially the very end. Also, I think the drop in quality was due to him rushing through the last few books after almost dying, but it seems like he's been planning this one long enough that it will be the same quality as the first 4.
  • righteousplaid
I stopped reading the series at "Wizard and the Glass", mainly because I didn't really care to have the main story of the series completely interrupted by going back in time for an entire book.
  • Boob
Sorry but mourn NOTHING that Eli Roth hasn't given us. It's a blessing.
  • Tetsuo_Man
I'm even more pleased that JJ Abrams stepped away from the Dark Tower... I swear to God, can somebody please tell him to stop touching the things I love.
  • righteousplaid
Awww did somebody not like Star Trek? Poor widdle thing.
  • Is it just me, or is the King streaming video really, really choppy and slow? Seriously? They couldn't have devoted a little more bandwidth to this video?
  • Stephen King is such a cool guy. There's never any air of pretention around him.
  • Elissa_Mac
I loved the ending of Cell.

But the ignorant masses must be appeased.
  • Forget bringing UNDER THE DOME to HBO. If anything needs to be adapted on HBO, its THE DARK TOWER.

A close-ended multi season series would be the best way to adapt all of the material. The flashbacks, fantasy and sci-fi elements would have made for a great JJ Abrams project but I'm not completely certain that even the Bad Robot team would've been able to bring each of the books to the big screen.

Whoever ends up attempting it, and I'm still pulling for Abrams and Lindelof, even if it takes 10 years, I'm hoping for a well produced HBO type TV series from them. Maybe a TV/Silver Screen hybrid...?

I cannot wait for the return of Carrie: The Musical!
  • gamerwithnolife
Looking forward to Under the Dome. Cell was one of the first Stephen King books I read and the miniseries or movie or whatever, should be good.
