LOL: South Park’s Avatar Parody

South Park Smurfs Avatar

The latest episode of South Park, an episode titled “Dancing With Smurfs,” (spoilers ahead) made an attempt to parody James Cameron’s upcoming 3D sci-fi epic Avatar. During the episode, Cartman becomes a Glenn Beck /Bill O’reilly like character, and at one point recalls a tale about spending time with the Smurfs. He became “one of them,” falling in love with Smurfette, and leading a revolt against the humans (led by Wendy) who have come to pillage and ruin smurfland. You can watch a clip of Cartman’s story after the jump. Or head on over to Southpark Studios to see the full episode, which yes, leads to James Cameron adapting the story for the big screen.

This "season" of South Park has been one of the best in awhile. The social commentary is A+++ and the funny is finally back.
  • Malaguy
with the exception of a random episode here or there, the funny never left.

They may have done this a little too soon. The vast majority of the public doesn't know the storyline is basically Dances with Wolves/Pocahontas. It was very funny though. It really came out of left field, as the whole episode revolved around parodying Glenn Beck.
  • Yeah the majority of the public doesn't know what the plot is, but the majority of people who watch South Park will know.
  • presto117
cause the majority of the public don't care enough about the trailer to remember it as anything that they'll consider top notch cinema. Hence the groups of people laughing at the trailer both times it played when i saw it in theaters.
  • MyOpinionMatters
You guys are forgetting that the majority of the public is the majority of the public which is the majority of the public.
  • Again I ask, does anyone actually care about 'Fish Police: The Movie', err, I mean 'Avatar'?

A movie about badly CGIed Fish people holds no interest to me, no matter how many dimensions it's presented in.
  • deeteer
And yet, you will still see it. Irony!
  • I probably won't. It doesn't interest me. The only way I'd see it is if nothing else was playing and I had an urge to see a movie. (which does happen from time to time)

Otherwise, I really doubt I'll see it.
  • Octoberist
you say that, and you don't even mention that it's a James Cameron movie. I know that the movie gets a lot of flack, but it's still James Cameron.

"Who care", cries out a fanboy.

It's getting to the point where you need the dude a fighting chance first. It's sad that people are already dismissing Cameron as if he's nothing.
  • Octoberist
or someone may say "I never liked James Cameron".

Listen, I'm weary of Avatar too. The hypebole spiral out of control due to Cameron's part and the story/visuals are 'okay' at best.

While I doubt it'll make it's 500 million back, if it makes only half of that and WAS a good movie, most likely it'll be Cameron's last film. And that, my friends, would be a sad thing.
  • OneFourFiveFelix
Christ, it didn't even MAKE half a billion.
It was a rumour done by the NYTimes. By a journalist with a grudgeful track record.
  • The Other Guest
Some people genuinely don't like his films. His career boils down to Terminator, Aliens, and Titanic. I'm not a big fan of any of his movies. Even if Avatar bombs, which it won't (people go to movies, there's not much competition against Avatar), James Cameron's still rich enough to do more films.
  • "you say that, and you don't even mention that it's a James Cameron movie."

Yeah, and I still never saw Titanic, so it being a Cameron movie means very little to me.
  • DARSFoG
My question is did Wendy really sell the rights, or did she use her superior knowledge over Eric Cartman to win!
  • egyptnation
those times are all messed up. avatar is supposed to be 3hrs, no? haha.
  • Meaney
    multiple screens perhaps?
  • dagreenman18
Congrats to Trey and Matt for kicking Fox news and James Cameron in the balls. Fox is the only one that deserved it, but the avatar rip was fantastic.
  • Matt
Apparently Slash Film didn't get that they were saying Avatar is a rip off of Dances with Wolves. Good job.
  • How did we not get it? It wasn't a subtle statement. They said it, in dialogue.
  • RosanatorDA
this was the weakest episode so far this half of the season, the whole episode was ripping on fox news (mostly glen beck), then they threw a curveball with the avatar thing. it didnt make sense with the rest of the episode.

You know TITANIC is NOT the only Movie James Cameron directed.
He's one of the few directors(martin scorsese) that has a great track record of making GOOD Quality movies.

    The Terminator (1984)
    Aliens (1986)
    The Abyss (1989)
    Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
    True Lies (1994)
    Titanic (1997)

Give the man a chance.... I FUCKING gurantee you that this movie is gonna be GOOD.
Oh, and if you like Dances with Wolves then why the fuck are you guys hating on this movie.
  • mariel
Almost all his movies start with 't', that man needs to find a new letter.
    Sorry couldn't help it.
  • The Other Guest
You guarantee that this movie is good? Did you make the movie? Even great film-makers make bad movies. Ridley Scotts future slate consists of an Alien prequel and a Monopoly movie, ffs!
  • vladd92
Even if the movie is based on these stories or follows a similar plot, I guarantee its going to put a fresh spin on the story, aside from having interesting characters and amazing graphics.
  • hairyhuman
Has anyone noticed that the Navi/Smurfs in Avatar kind of look like cat based furry characters. I have to give props to James Cameron for exploiting white guilt, hippies, and fur-suiters at the same time to make a buck.
  • mbellerbrock
Yes, everyone has noticed, welcome to the party.
  • rpk
Those poor smurfs! How many smurf berries do you need damn it! How Many!<wipes tear>
  • Paul
I was only like twelve when Titanic came out, but id imagine people wouldnt be that interested in a retelling of Titanic but with a love story, and that it would suck. And it was one of the biggest budgets of all time, but still made more money then any movie before.
  • Scrambles
    1. This is really only giving the movie publicity.
    2. South Park isnt really insulting avatar or James Cameron, there just pointing out a similarity. and even if the movies are similar I trust there will be a great spin and it WILL be well done.
    3. Lets wait til the movie comes out before we critique it.
