Dollhouse Cancelled, Significant Finale Promised

dushku

As well as the cancellation of two shows I don’t think anybody much cares about - Hank and Eastwick - today has also seen the axe fall on Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse. Inevitable? Maybe. A shame? Of course… but that’s not to say the series hasn’t let us down, time and again.

There will have been two seasons of thirteen episodes a piece screened by the time the series goes off air for the final time, which together make up 26 of the show’s chapters, the 27th centre piece chapter being a special, DVD only installment that has perversely managed to be the best of the lot so far. Had everything been as great as that episode, the instant fan favourite Epitaph 1, I think there would be fists flying right now. Instead, there’s just a muted wave of civil disobedience in cyberspace with a surge of commentary on Twitter, Facebook and the like.

What will fans be stuffing into envelopes and mailing to the Fox suits, do you reckon? Dolls? Or maybe they’ll not bother, because I don’t think anybody can really believe there’s any chance of bringing this one back from the dead.

Hollywood Reporter seemed to get the news out first with this promise of closure:

The sci-fi series, which is filming episode 11, is expected to finish its 13-episode order. Whedon is said to be on board and plans to give the show a proper ending with a big finale.

I fear that Whedon and co. trying to seque into their endgame in just two episodes could leave the wrap-up feeling a little bumpy. All the same, it’s a better option than sudden silence and plot threads flapping in the wind.

HitFix have published a tentative schedule for the airing of the remaining episodes which would have the finale screening on January 22nd.

Here are some of my favourite responses from the Twittersphere so far:

@syfy: Looks like Fox finally canceled Dollhouse. (No, I don’t think we’ll pick it up.)

@stayingin: Least surprising news ever.

@RoushTVGuideMag: We’ll always have Epitaph One. (On DVD, not on Fox.)

@jennifergodwin: Contrarian POV: Fans should not attempt to save #Dollhouse but instead push Enver Gjokaj, Dichen Lachmann, etc for new, better jobs.

@IMDbTV Completely agree w/ @Memles: As much as I admired Dollhouse, I easily shift my interest to seeing what Whedon does next.

My hunch is “what Whedon does next” won’t be on TV, and I don’t just mean the Dr. Horrible sequel. Picture this: Whedon and the internetz running towards each other on a sunset beach, in slow-motion and with Erc Satie playing in the background. It’s a match made in heaven…

Update: Over at Whedonesque, Joss’ official statement finds him looking forwards, not backwards. He says:

By the time the last episode airs, you’ll know what my next project is.

There’s at least silver lining.

  • Personally I bailed about 3 episodes into season 2, you can only suspend so much disbelief. Plus it was increasing clear that Fox was never really behind the show.
  • mbellerbrock
Haha, you're only one episode behind, they've postponed airing episode 5 until December.
  • lipslikeasukal
Amen to that. How did Dollhouse get so boring? It's like Whedon didn't think they'd return for a second season so couldn't come up with anything good for it.

Needed more Amy Acker and less of all those freakin' dolls. I say it's the whole premise-- if they get their personalities, etc. wiped-out, then I can't relate to them.
  • I'm a big fan of Joss. But when I heard about Dollhouse and Joss partnering with Fox, I forced myself to not get too attached to it like I did with Firefly. I casually watched this show, and I enjoyed it (not nearly as much as Firefly), but I can't say that I'm saddened by it's cancellation. Joss and Fox just don't work well together, and Fox just never really backs Joss up with anything. I'm surprised they gave him a second season for Dollhouse, in all honesty.
  • ignopred season 1 til dvd and enjoyed quite a bit and absolutely loved epitaph 1. and yet when season2 started I didn't have the drive to keep up. I only downloaded eps anyways so I doubt I would've helped.

It's because they put it on Fridays. Just because "The X-Files" did good numbers on Fridays a decade ago doesn't mean sci-fi series can always tap their full potential that night. If they had given it the Tuesday "Fringe" spot from last season, this would be a different story. Not to mention, if season 1 didn't take 4-5 episodes before it got good. I guess we're lucky it got a season 2 in the first place, just when the show was starting to get really deep and tap the potential of its premise.
  • Or maybe it's just not a good show. I waited for that magical moment when season one was supposed to become good, and it did ... for two episodes. Then it was back to the boring, nonsensical plot lines.

Hopefully Joss Whedon will focus on film either writing scripts or Directing movies. And if he wants to do another show. I suggest he look at the CW, HBO, Showtime, USA, ABC. F Fox. The only good show they have is Fringe.

"All the same, it’s a better option than sudden silence and plot threads flapping in the wind."

    *sigh* Firefly....
  • What baffles me is that Whedon always knew that Dollhouse was hanging on by the skin of its teeth, and yet the season 2 premiere was such a damp squib of mafia-lite baddies and predictable deii ex machinae that the ratings just plopped off again.

After the barnstorming Epitaph One on the dvd release, I had hoped that season 2 would hit the ground running and give the viewers the dark and terrifying storyline we knew that Dollhouse had waiting in the wings . . .

Hopefully the conclusion to season 2 will ramp up the stakes to a compelling conclusion - for a niche, Geek show, its all very well sympathising with the Doll's feelings etc week after week, but i think weve been waiting a tad too long for kick-assery that theyre capable of, and the inevitable escalation.

Whedon is clearly a great talent - whilst Dollhouse may not be mourned by many, i think the opportunity for Joss to show us the full extent of his powers is going to be increasingly limited, and that would be the real loss.

Your point about the season 2 premiere is bang on.
  • almostinfocus
Yeah, that sums it up well.
  • The Guest
    My mom cared about Eastwick.
  • BrendonConnelly
Tell her I'm sorry for her loss.
  • ericdpalmer
Sadly this it the least surprising news I've heard this year... My interest in this show peaked before the cast was revealed.

Eliza Dushku having the opportunity to showcase her "acting chops" through multiple personalities? <<hits self destruct button>>
  • REAL6
Maybe now we can get Season 3 of Sarah Conner Chronicles!!!
  • Mecline
    That didn't take long...
  • krackajap
Not unless Dollhouse being canceled for some reason convinces WB to sell the Sarah Connor Chronicles episodes to Fox for dirt cheap again.
  • fanboy_d
Did John Cassaday get to direct an episode?
  • BrendonConnelly
    Yep.
  • Poland626
I have the season 1 disc 1 from netflix right next to me. Guess I'll be returning it before I start to watch it. No point since 2 seasons isn't enough for me to watch a show.

Looks like I'm moving Fringe up to the top of my list to rent.
  • krackajap
It's going to be hilarious when Fringe gets the axe too.
  • Poland626
and I was just about to rent the first season. Should I even start Fringe?
  • krackajap
Sure. I think it's a great show that started off slow and developed into something really interesting. Fox is just terrible at managing their shows it seems and Fringe is suffering because of it.
  • guest
Yeah. Fringe is a great show
  • BrendonConnelly
Huh? You want watch a show if it's only 2 seasons long? Why?
  • Poland626
It's hard for me to start watching a show unless I've been keeping up every week personally. I just don't feel as motivated as if I were to watch, say Joss's other show Buffy or any other show that is longer and not as slow as I'm hearing Dollhouse to be.
  • krackajap
I'm just glad that Enver Gjokaj and Dichen Lachman got their chances to really shine this season. I look forward to seeing what else they do after this.
  • dagreenman18
Well, here's hoping there will be a proper ending. At least, for once, Fox gave it a chance. But theyre fucking dumb for putting on Friday nights in the first place.
  • TheDaftPunk
While I was never a big fan, and only caught a few episodes here and there, I would take a guess that the Friday time slot had something to do with it. It's like FOX didn't care at all.
  • JoJo
This joss whedon is most overrated thing ever. He should thank fox for atleast giving him a chance with Dollhouse. Seriously his fans should shut the fuck up.

Dollhouse was a shitty ass show and it deserved this death.
  • And yet Heroes is still on the air...

This is a huge bummer. Dollhouse is one of only a handful of shows that I actually make the effort to watch each week.
  • Ditto.

Dollhouse still seems fresh in comparison.
    Whedon should sign with NBC?
  • lipslikeasukal
    Not for long.

    Bwahahahahaah!
  • almostinfocus
There were only 12 episodes aired during the first season. There was an unaired, alternate pilot that, like "Epitaph 1", appears on the last disc of the dvd set. But I don't think that makes the first season 13 episodes long.
  • BrendonConnelly
    My bad.
  • bigmansmallmouth
    Sigh. Joss will never win.
  • He just won an emmy? Maybe he should just stay away from Fox.
  • justrobby
poor guy, i stuck by the show from the start.
Epitaph One was awesome i Agree
  • Jack
They never should have kept this over The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
  • krackajap
Are you actually that stupid and believe it was a one or the other choice?
  • Bluechild
I have given up on investing my time with fox, I will follow Joss Whedon anywhere, well anywhere but there. Shame on fox...again.
  • explodingclowns
    Summer Glau strikes again!
