VOTD: Ambiguous Endings Resolved

Lost in Translation

We love movies with ambiguous endings, but sometimes you just want to see a definite conclusion. The guys at CollegeHumor have decided to resolve some of the biggest movie and television endings in history, including: The Wrestler, Lost in Translation, No Country For Old Men, The Graduate and The Sopranos. Watch the video after the jump.

Hi i just found these posters http://ratnerfilms.tumblr.com/ of random movies with the face of brett ratner in them it´s very funny.
  • Ha the last one was the best but they were all good
  • thrillhouse
This only serves to remind me how awesome each one of these endings really was.

Yeah that was some funny stuff except for the last bit it was kinda weak. Then again maybe that's cause I liked the idea that The Sopranos ends with life going on and the ultimate message being "Things don't end with a hollywood blow out conclusion in real life."

There are certainly multiple ways of looking at it, but I think there's so much evidence that Tony Soprano was killed that I can't ignore it.
  • Alexander
Evidence? I don't think there's any evidence. There's a lot of videos on YouTube that jump to conclusions, but no evidence.

I love how the youtube guy calls it "my theory." Bullshit. That was all cribbed from Bob Harris' wonderful article about the ending, which lays it out far better, even without video, and much more convincingly. Unfortunately, Mr. Harris' article is no longer available online.

Anyway, there's plenty of evidence. References to deaths in past episodes and the way that they transpire. Lots of directorial/camera choices made by a smart guy like Chase that tell you things, without using words or even images.

But like I said, it's all up for interpretation - I'm just positive that all of this information really is there. It's too intricately put together and David Chase is far too intelligent for there NOT to be.

What evidence do you cite that makes more likely that Tony was killed? I saw this as the director giving just enough information and build up for the viewer to decide that A) Tony got whacked and never saw it coming or B) the show cut out abruptly ending the audiences prolonged look into the life of this family in such a way as to tell us life goes on and shit gets deeper and it never ends.

I really think The creators were playing both ends of the field so the audience could bicker over it til time comes to an end. Unless we see a reunion special or a movie I think it'll stand a debate with no right answer.

I agree. As I already said, it's all up for interpretation. I just decided I was convinced by all the evidence in one direction...I can certainly see that some would fall on the other side. I think there's plenty of evidence, but it's certainly not definitive. Nothing is definitive unless you see Tony Soprano killed, which you don't.

I am so over ambiguous endings! I think all these endings were very clever and good. Check out this list of top ambiguous endings movies of all time: http://www.ranker.com/list-of/film
A movie really is nothing without a good ending. Do you all agree?
  • thrillhouse
I don't think any of these movies have ambiguous endings, actually. Especially NCfOM. Sure, it didn't end satisfactorily, but what was left unanswered?!

There is enough evidence in The Wrestler, Lost in Translation, and The Sopranos to know exactly what happened. You are free to interpret things differently, but I think the intentions of the filmmakers are all over these things.

I guess you could say The Graduate is ambiguous, as far as what happens next, but I think the looks on the two young actors' faces at the very end tell you exactly what they are both thinking.

    ya, that was funny stuff!

    Hilarious! Thanks for sharing Peter!

At the end of Lost in Translation, what Bill Murray whispers is actually "I want you to go back to your husband and give him a hug and tell him you love him." It's way sweeter than those two ending up together.

    Vic Mackey - The Sheild

Best open ending ever to a TV series
  • Am I the only one that thought this video was shite?

The endings for all of those films were fantastic. If you need anything explained maybe you shouldn't watch high-caliber film.
