Cool interview. I wish we learned more about the origins of "The Box" as in how much of a fan Kelly is of Twilight Zone and how that inspired him to write this film.

    @ Cory

You should know better than to say anything negative about /Filmcast guests, especially when the guest's film is advertised by a huge banner on the homepage. Not cool dude. This is no place to voice your opinion. :-/
  • Cory's comment was removed because:

    a) He clearly had not listened to the podcast
    b) He made personal attacks against our guest

This behavior constitutes trolling and is not allowed in our comments.

Any disrespect to /Filmcast guests is expressly forbidden for one simple reason: We like to continue to have guests, and we won't allow these comments to become a forum for insulting them. I think most of our listeners would agree that having guests is nice. This policy is enforced for all guests, whether they are a director of a major feature film, or an online journalist with a small blog.

If you have any other questions/comments about these policies, feel free to e-mail us (slashfilmcast@gmail) and we'll be happy to discuss them further there. Comments sections are for discussing the ideas in the post.

Although Corey was crass, he at least provided reasons for his opinion and, quite honestly, had something of a point about being able to aptly convey a story to the audience. 27min into the interview Kelly essentially admits that he may not have met that particular challenge on Southland Tales, though Corey focused on the need for a Director's Ed. of DD as an example. I intended to take Corey to task on that issue, but his comment had been deleted, which irked me because I took time to compose a reply.

At it's core, DD is not as complex as people think; I understood it the first time through. It's not nearly as complex as Primer. Unfortunately, the precise mechanism by which the story plays out is essentially absent, which can be frustrating in a movie about time travel. There are also a lot of distractions in DD that obscure the truth of what's going on, and frankly this keeps the movie interesting and worthy of multiple viewings. Whether this misdirection is intentional, serendipity, or the result of sloppy writing/directing/editing is anyone's guess. Whatever you attribute it to, it works.

I haven't seen anything else by Kelly, so I can't really comment on his overall skill as a storyteller. I just wanted to reply regarding DD.

How can you dislike Richard Kelly? The dude has the cool factor down. His movies have a cult following for a reason.

I agree with David's decision with Corey because I think slash film has the best and civil fans on the net. I really don't want trolling and childish flame wars here. Civil debates are okay, however!

Anyway, like Richard Kelly, I don't know if I'm going to see S. Darko. Or at least, I'm not going to make the effort to rent it. It's sad to see the studio system mishandling certain properties (American Psycho 2) but that's the nature of the beast.

I was never a hug Richard Kelly fan (but literally ALL my friends, and especially my girlfriend, are way up on his nuts) but this interview really impressed me. He seems like a really sharp, nice guy and I think I need to revisit his work.

Awesome job, /film. I'll keep listening as long as you guys maintain this high quality on your podcasts. Great stuff.

One of the few current directors whose name will instantly get me interested, Richard Kelly is a pretty creative guy who I hope continues to get the chance to realise his ideas. Great filmcast. Great discussion. Will be seeing The Box asap.

I used Donnie Darko in a literary study in high school, and it was AWESOME to hear Richard Kelly speak some more on the movie's meaning. Just wish I knew the salon.com article before !

awesome ep in hearing the behind the scenes / producer stuff of Hollywood!

Awesome After Dark, you all should definitely have Richard Kelly on again for a spoiler-filled discussion of the Box. That would be great!

I enjoyed the episode, fellows. Thanks to your talk with Richard Kelly, I now want to purchase all of his movies. On Blu-ray. I'm also taking my entire Australian Rules Rugby team to see The Box this weekend. I never heard of Kelly before your podcast.

I can't wait to hear your next exciting guest!

I just watched THE BOX and I was very surprised at how poignant the film was. Some of the scenes and imagery were very moving in its humility; a nice little use of the "V" peace sign, the relationship between the two protagonists+their love for their son, and the (SPOILERS) conversation between Cameron Diaz and Frank Langella in the library. Despite the film's grim tone, I think it shed light on it's moralistic themes as well as the limits and potentials of human nature. I think the film also had neat little homages to Richard Kelly's other films and I enjoyed it very much.

Loved it and i will now watch the movie after hearing this interview !!

Great show guys.. Richard Kelly seems like a super nice dude, can't wait to see The Box soon.. Props! :)
  • BigbyWolf
I loved this episode guys! Richard seemed like a really smart dude and as an aspiring author I loved his previous use of viral marketing and the way he approaches the movie in the role of the storyteller. I wasn't sure if I was going to see this movie, but hearing about the sci-fi angle really has me interested. I recently discovered the /filmcast and it is up there with TWIT and Diggnation as some my favorite podcsts (and like those has a good mix of witty humor and excellent dialogue). Keep up the good work!

So glad Richard Kelly came on, quite the grab for the /Filmcast. Loved Donnie Darko, excited to go see the Box this thanksgiving. Richard seemed like a very thoughtful, intelligent guy, and it was interesting to hear him talk about setting up shots in movies. Also, great discussion on the ending of DD! So cool that he was there to verify the interpretation - thats how I took the ending as well, so very very cool to hear my thoughts vindicated on the podcast haha. Hope he comes back soon.

Hey guys, a little late here, but I just tuned in to the podcast! AWESOME podcast, it answered my podcast prayers! And particularly amazing to listen to Richard Kelly talk candidly about DD and the particulars of his filming style! What a great guy -- humble and passionate. All these episodes are just fantastic to listen to - from an actors perspective but also for movie lovers and filmmakers as well. Way to go guys, and keep up the awesome work!

I very much enjoyed Richard Kelly on the /filmcast. As a film student, I would have loved more about the start and production of Donnie Darko. Anytime a filmmaker that comes out of nowhere talks, I always want to ask the question how did you get the funding? But regardless as always, great podcast, keep up the good work, and please get more directors, writers, and actors on the show.
