Paramount Pictures wants to reward all of the internet moviegoers which helped make Paranormal Activity a viral phenomenon. Sure, some might argue that the marketing campaign was a very calculated attempt to make it feel like the audience “made the success” of the movie, and those people might not be wrong (but who cares? really…). Paramount is now taking that marketing concept to the release of the Blu-ray/DV, by putting YOUR NAME in the credits of the home video release. Head on over to the ParanormalActivityProject.com and fill in your name, email, and birthdate and you will be featured in the DVD credits. How cool is that?

This isn’t the first time this has happened. Peter Jackson held a simuler stunt with the Extended Editions of The Lord of the Rings series, allowing fan club members to have their names in the DVD credits. And Kevin Smith famously included the first 10,000 MySpace users to friend the Clerks II movie account in the film’s credits (Weinstein Co thought it would take weeks, but enough people signed up in the first two hours).

But the coolest thing about the Paranormal opportunity is that fans won’t have to sit through 5 minutes of white scroll to see their names. Anyone who has seen the movie knows there isn’t many credits included on the tail end of the film.. actually, not much more than a few seconds and one title card.

    Lame.

vanity will make people buy this dvd just to see their name - its an old trick of paper publishing.

I wanna see my name. Hopefully it goes in alphabetical order.

    How cool is that?

Not at all. Unless I get a free DVD since I'm a credited contributor to the film.
Otherwise, it's a cheap, meaningless marketing stunt.

What's to stop people from typing in fake names like "Jack Hoff" or even "Osama bin Laden"?

So is it going to be like the 20+ minutes of credits dedicated to the Lord of the Rings fan club on the Extended Edition DVDs? What a wonderful use of disc space!

    Or the Clerks 2 credits

What little affect this movie had on me would probably be totally lost outside of the cinema. I can't imagine watching this on DVD, personally.

Worked for me. I can see my name (Natas Lleh-Esiarp) on the list right now. They're gonna have to screen that list carefully. There are some BS names on there, mine included.

How many gimmicks will they use to sell this hype to line their pockets? Incredible.

Could be a fun story to tell a girl. Yeah baby I worked on the film. Steven Spielberg wanted to go in and edit the film and replace all knives in the movies with walkie talkies and I talked him out of it.
  • Very nice!

Guys. This whole thing is irrelevant because they aren't crediting the main player here: me, the demon. (I am actually also gutted at my lack of screen time, but that's another story.) I don't want to be anti-Hollywood, but what's ended up on screen is a very biased retelling of events. Who says the camera never lies?

A slightly LESS biased version of what happened is on my blog. I'd thank you to read it and spread the word.

Yes, it may be a cheap marketing trick and yes, it will get people to buy it just to see their names in the credits. But I think it's still cool. Too bad registration is already closed /=
