Brothers Movie Trailer #2

Brothers

Lionsgate has released a new trailer for the family drama Brothers, which is directed by six-time Oscar nominee Jim Sheridan (In America, In The Name of the Father), from a screenplay by David Benioff (The Kite Runner, 25th Hour), and stars Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman, Sam Shepard, Clifton Collins, Jr., Carey Mulligan, and Ethan Suplee.

The film tells the story of a black-sheep younger brother who cares for the wife and children of a decorated Marine who goes missing overseas, “with consequences that will shake the foundation of the entire family.” The list of names involved with this film is very impressive. The trailer has a really over-the-top, on-the-noise, voiceover, which gives the feel of a made-for-television movie, rather than an Awards hopeful. Watch the trailer embedded after the jump. As always, leave your thoughts in the comments below.

BROTHERS tells the powerful story of two siblings, thirty-something Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) and younger brother Tommy Cahill (Jake Gyllenhaal), who are polar opposites. A Marine about to embark on his fourth tour of duty, Sam is a steadfast family man married to his high school sweetheart, the aptly named Grace (Natalie Portman), with whom he has two young daughters (Bailee Madison, Taylor Grace Geare). Tommy, his charismatic younger brother, is a drifter just out of jail who’s always gotten by on wit and charm. He slides easily into his role as family provocateur on his first night out of prison, at Sam’s farewell dinner with their parents, Elsie (Mare Winningham) and Hank Cahill (Sam Shepard), a retired Marine.

Shipped out to Afghanistan, Sam is presumed dead when his Black Hawk helicopter is shot down in the mountains. At home in suburbia, the Cahill family suddenly faces a shocking void, and Tommy tries to fill in for his brother by assuming newfound responsibility for himself, Grace, and the children.

But Sam is not dead; he and a fellow soldier have been captured by Taliban fighters. In Afghanistan’s harsh, remote Pamir Mountains, Sam is subjected to traumas that threaten to rob him of his very humanity. At the same time that Sam’s sense of self is being destroyed overseas, Tommy’s self-image is strengthening at home. And in the grief and strangeness of their new lives, Grace and Tommy are naturally drawn together. Their longstanding frostiness dissolves, but both are frightened and ashamed of the mutual attraction that has replaced it.

When Sam unexpectedly returns to the States, a nervous mood settles over the family. Sam, uncharacteristically withdrawn and volatile, grows suspicious of his brother and his wife. Their familiar roles now nearly reversed, Sam and Tommy end up facing the ultimate physical and mental challenge when they confront each other. In the shifting family dynamics, who will dominate? And how will the brothers come to terms with issues of love, loyalty, and manhood—and with the woman caught between them?

  • I would have never thought I'd say this but Tobey Maguire looks alike a bad ass.
  • dylan
I hate how much the trailer gives away...
  • kreader
Anyone who's seen the original Susanne Bier film will say the same. Those last trailer scenes of Maguire losing it is probably the whole point of the story. It's meant to be about moral philosophy, not army-dad-gone-crazy so this trailer is horrible.
  • KimberleeAustinTx
all sides have to be show of what happends to millitary dad/mom
  • i thought this movie was going to be more of a drama, now it appears to be more of a horror film....
  • TheGreenMalice
So this is the true story of what would happen with Tom Hanks and Wilson?
  • STEPHANIE
    LMAO@ YOUR COMMENT....BWAAAAAAHAAAAA...
  • freemachine
First Mary Jane, and now this? Poor Toby can't win.
  • Monica
Bad trailer. They are selling the movie as a suspense, but it's a drama.
  • capawesome
    This looks so corny.
  • luke_a
Oh gawd. I was hoping the second trailer would fix the problems with the first trailer, but it actually makes it worse. My enthusiasm for the film is dwindling.
  • kobe
So... it's basically Pearl Harbor minus the explosions. lame.
  • eddymovies
Do you guys see Tobey going ape shit? That's how he SHOULD have been with the black suit in Spidey 3. Movie of the year, I'm calling it now.

    "Annie...your breaking my heart."
  • greggorybasore
Well that's the most unnecessary trailer narration in cinematic history... at least to my knowledge. On the plus side it's great to finally see Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal as brothers in a movie.
  • sean
lol tobey looks gay as hell
  • Russel
Yeah, I enjoyed the tension of the first trailer... the second rate voiceover work doesn't do the new trailer any favors (was all the information in the first trailer too subtle?), as you noted.
  • Benjo
the original was awesome... great writing, great acting...
  • zamarov
Jesus Jim, surely the studio can make a better trailer for your movie
that was atrocious, especially the voice over
  • That movie seems incredible, but the trailer is god awful.
  • quintushalls
They seriously need to fire the people who made the trailer and go with a different company.

My Husband is in iraq right now and this film shows what most military familys do go thru and right now we are going thru the trust just like this family and he does have a brother but i hope we do not get that far. Also for the one that wrote about the army dad does not go this crazy; You dont no untill you been in are shoes they do change and go thru that . Well i love this movie and it shows another side of what happens to millitary familys.
  • sean7474
Im in the Army and have had something like this happen to me while I was deployed. I know guys that have went this nuts cause of the same thing. I just glad soemone has finally brought light to the problem soldiers like myself have to face coming back from war.

I have yet to see Susanne Bier's Danish version of "Brothers", does it really matter that they show Tobey Maguire's meldown? And if so, how does his meltdown contribute to the significance of the film? What if Jim Sheridan does not follow Bier's storyline verbatim?
  • James22
Tobey's meltdown is paramount to the film's meaning representing a moral philosophy. I really don't care for Beir's film, hopefully Jim Sheridan will make some much needed changes! I am sure this movie will be great!
  • Rob
Did the rest of you realize Natalie Portman get naked in this flick!
  • Stephanie
I just recently saw the preview in the movies and I must say with what I saw I am dying to see this movie, however, I must agree with the comment above the preveiws and the trailers give away a too much of the movie. I love the scandolous drama!

    GIRLS ARE EASILY LOSE ONESELF
  • Vanz
I saw it this weekend and it was truly a great flick. Best i've seen all year. The trailers actually leave out a lot, they just give you the outline. I'll do you a favor and not give away any spoilers. I highly recommend seeing it though.
  • Philter
It's tough to comment on this film without giving away as much as the trailer, but this movie is intense and fairly well-acted. Maguire was amazing - the aforementioned kitchen scene is prime Oscar material, and more importantly, I totally believed it. (I wanted to yell out "He is looking for forgiveness!!) Natalie Portman was hot and Mare Winningham was admirably and believably understated. (Not sure what I think of Sam Shepherd and Jake Gyllenhall yet)
I appreciated that the narrative asked the audience to examine difficult issues without hammering in some pre-determined conclusions. I wish the film had room to explore some of the territory it seemed to overlook - did the absence of the good brother allow the bad one to attain respectability? When the good brother came home, did it leave the bad brother without redemption? Perhaps if that had been explored jake would have had more to do and seem less like a cipher. I also appreciated the ending.
