With the original writers of Who Framed Roger Rabbit now at work on a potential sequel, Robert Zemeckis is starting to talk, in very guarded terms, about ideas for the film. Given that he’s become a massive proponent of performance capture technology, there have been questions (such as those raised by Brendon) about whether the original film’s blend of drawn animation and live action actors would be augmented by new tech. That seems likely to be the case, as evidenced by current statements from Zemeckis.

MTV got the director to talk very briefly about his approach to the film and the core characters. When asked if performance capture tech was part of the reason the movie was finally moving forward, he said,

That’s true, yeah, although I wouldn’t use if for the cartoon characters, because I think they should stay two-dimensional. That’s their charm. I wouldn’t dimensionalize Roger. And I couldn’t dimensionalize Jessica, even if I wanted to, because she doesn’t have a nose. We don’t want to give her a nose!…All the other characters that they would sort of have fun with would be magnificent in performance capture technology.

OK, so the core animated characters won’t be performance capture. That is good. But this leads to obvious questions. What are the ‘other characters’ Zemeckis is talking about? Humans or toons? Seeing toons dealing with new CGI and performance capture competition seems to make sense, but to make that happen the film’s time frame would have to be decades after the original’s. Given the fact that key humans like Bob Hoskins have obviously aged 20 years since the last movie, that’s not the most outlandish thing to consider.

And with respect to Bob Hoskins returning, Zemeckis had nothing real to say. No surprise there, but that will probably lead to more speculation that the film’s human characters will all be performance capture.

he's a mad man...the charm of the original was the live-action aspect combined with the 2D toons...motion capture is the worst thing he could do for the sequel..Zemeckis is loosing it
  • Sorry, but Robert Zemeckis' computer animated features (The Polar Express, Beowulf, the upcoming A Christmas Carol) creep me the f*** out. All the human characters are dead behind the eyes.
  • Christopher_M
Beowulf looked the same as the Final Fantasy movie did...it's a long way to make these characters believable, no leaps and bounds yet in the tech...Avatar may change my mind but the Zemeckis films are horrible

    He needs an intervention.
  • fanboy_d
    I wholeheartedly agree.

"Rob, we're doing this because we love y-STOP ATTACHING MO CAP PING PONG BALLS WHILE I'M TALKING TO YOU"
  • That's stupid. I think that performance capture is a cool way of animating things but why not just do it in live action? That was a large point of the first film, right?
  • Christian A. Strommen
If they're going to introduce CGI characters then it doesn't help setting it decades after the original. The original was set in 1947, if you want to add new CGI characters you have to at least go to 1995, which makes it almost 50 years after the happening in the first one. Hoskin's character would be, if not dead, then at least really old.

And besides, would make more sense to set it in present day in that case. And that's over 60 years after the first.

See that could work though. For one thing it'd be a great way to talk about what it's like for cartoon characters who have been around for decades and what their impact on the world has been.

Good god. I'm so sick of this crap. It's now been 10 years since Zemeckis put actual human beings in front of a camera and filmed them as is. None of these mo-cap amusement park rides even comes close to Forrest Gump, Contact, Back to the Future, Cast Away, etc. etc. etc. Someone needs to smack this man upside the head and tell him to make a REAL movie.
  • fidel007
It should be called Motion CRAPTURE
  • Lol. Yes! I hope that does catch on. I shall be using it.
  • fanboy_d
been using mo-crap for a while. it's cathartic.

Perhaps, how the original story dealt with the 2 worlds, human and cartoon, maybe the new story has to incorporated 3D characters against 2D characters. The storyline would make sense how 3D amination is running 2D out of Town....
  • Octoberist
I'll say if before and I'll say it again: I think Zemeckis hates the human race.
  • Brendan McD
What's the difference between performance capture and motion capture? Is there any difference?
  • bomberman
    they are the same thing
    however

performance catpure: from what i've seen, it stays within the scope of the frame and keeps to looking realistic

motion capture: beowulf was a tremendous piece of shit.
  • keesvd
Well err, thanks for 'clearing that out'.

Performance capture is filming the actors and re-doing them in the computer. Motion Capture digitally registers the movement of the actors for a more accurate image; it's basically a preset.

    Hope I've answered your question.
  • I think adding computer generated animated characters to the mix is quite a little novelty and could provide some cool results.
  • Colonel_Kurtz
I have no problem with him including performance capture characters in this sequel on one condition. He has to bring Christoper Lloyd back to kill them all off...forever. I hope that maybe, just maybe, seeing 2D toons on the same screen with his 3D abominations will finally open Zemeckis' eyes to how creepy and NOT REAL they actually look.
  • greggorybasore
Wow all the vitriol for a concept still in development and still vague. Can we at least give the man a thumbs up for being smart enough to keep Roger, Jessica etc. in their original style?

Also with the possibility of Bob Hoskins not coming back it'd totally make sense to set t he movie decades in the future and show what life might be like for aging cartoon characters that don't physically age. What might Roger be like after seeing decades of turbulent changes in American culture while being contractually obligated to stay largely the same? Aside from the obvious commentary on 2D vs. 3D animation I think this could offer an area for deep reflection on pop culture.

I have nothing against performance capture.

Just keep Robert Zemeckis away from it.
  • dagreenman18
Well, he's lost it. Next thing we know, he'll be making Motion Capture Back To The Future 4. With a Talking DeLorean.
  • fuking zemekis is as stubborn and clueless as george lucas. both refuse to admit when they are wrong - mo cap will ruin what could be an amazing sequel. this is getting very irritating. i'd rather not even have him direct if this is the bullshit we have to look forward to.
  • roger rabbit
    this movie will suck balls
  • Rudin
What happened to you Zemeckis? Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forest Gump, but now all this Performance Capture crap. Come back to your roots! This will look so dump with Performance capture humans and 2d toons. :(
  • papasanchez
I think everyone needs to take a deep breath about performance capture and calm down. It's getting silly. What's wrong with just making the movie the way it was done before. Puuuweeeeeeze?!!!
  • juanv
I don't understand the obsession that Zemeckis has with mocap. What's more confusing is why make a sequel to a movie that is over 20 years old? Come up with something new Zemckis!!! What happened to the good movies you used to make? Get away from mocap and go back to live action.
  • Too much faith in something that never quite turns out as brilliant as promised. LET IT GO, Rob. PLEASE?!
  • oh the humanity
If Richard Williams returns to handle the animation, count me in. His son Alex Williams would be, I suppose, an acceptable compromise. No Williams Family animators on this show and we're looking at childhoods getting raped up the butthole on an unimaginable scale.
  • Dr_Mecha
OH GOD DON'T MAKE THIS MOVIE.
Why did Zemeckis become the new Lucas?
  • moviefan
Well i am glad he wants to keep the cartoons 2D like they should be. As for the whole motion capture/performance capture stuff. We need to know more about the film's story before we freak out. If bob hospkins is back the film will probably be set 20+ yrs post the first film. Which means be around the late 60s early 70s. If he isnt going back. The whole idea of 2D toons feeling out and outdated by the emerging 3D cgi toons could still work out best. But we have to see how things go first.
