Cool Stuff: Retro Up Posters

Eric Tan's Up Art

Correction: Apparently Eric Tan did not create all these posters, I was wrong in that assumption. He created  “Journey into the Wild” (with the dogs), Craig Foster did the SAA South American Air (with the Lama), Erik Evans did the “Paradise Falls” (with the bird), and Paul Conrad did the five remaining posters.

To celebrate the November 10th DVD & Blu-ray Combo pack release of Pixar’s Up, Disney has released high resolution copies of Eric Tan’s awesome retro posters which were created during the development of the film for inspiration, and were hung in Pixar Animation Studios during production.

We’ve featured many of artist Eric Tan’s creations in past Cool Stuff columns: we’ve spotlighted his work for past Pixar productionsX-MenLOST , among other things. Tan has been creating a series of posters for the Indiana Jones film series. You can see his Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom posters in our linked Cool Stuff articles. Check out the Up posters after the jump, and click on the images to enlarge.

I find all these images slightly dull, they lack atmosphere and character for me. What's different about 'UP' visually is it's wonderful colour palette, sense of nostalgia and comedic characters. These posters just miss the mark in all those areas in my opinion. Some of them are just ugly like the 'Muntz' Lair' one and others lack any compositional quality like 'fly up to venezuela'. There is so much film related artwork out there on the web and some of it is amazing. You could be a bit more selective about which artwork you post here, after all just because someone makes it doesn't mean it's good. Just my opinion.

Agreed. While Tan is an excellent graphic designer, his compositions are generally uninteresting. A lot of retro-rehash, well done by the way, but arguably stale. A lot of his artwork reminds me of BRUTE! (Aidan Hughes of KMFDM fame), who I'd prefer to see create a couple of movie posters using his insanely dynamic visual style. With respect to BRUTE!, nothing says "IN YOUR FUCKING 3D FACE" like his artwork.

Yeah I see where you're coming from, just looked at some of the Aidan Hughes, it's a very bold and loose style, dirty and visceral and full of energy. Some of the Pulp Fiction covers are awesome! The Tan pieces are similar in the way he draws his chunky characters, I think -particularly the Indiana Jones series but with none of the drama captured in a lot of the Brute stuff. I always keep an eye on sites like Juxtapoz, Dropular, Abduzeedo and CGUnit -great artwork is everywhere, so come on /film shop around for better stuff to post! :D

WOW!!!! Thanks for those cool links. I love the art nouveau work by John Baizley on Juxtapoz. Art nouveau is my absolute favorite style.

Nice Map, no Bolivia, no Ecuador.

I would love to own the entire series, but since I'm broke, I'll have to settle for printouts...for now!

    <3 Eric Tan artwork.
  • These are a bit below par for Eric Tan. I'm a graphic designer, and I won't even try to lie about emulating his work. However, these seem sort of stereotypical and bland. None of these really have the wow factor that a lot of his previous work has had. The only one that really stands out to me is the Art Deco inspired Spirit of Adventure poster.
  • Hey guys, many of these posters weren't designed by Eric Tan, but the also phenomenally talented Paul Conrad. http://www.superrobotmonster.com See his April 30 post.
