Step off that ledge Oscar fans, even though Hugh Jackman has declined to return to this year’s event, the show will go on. Today we’ve learned via the LA Times that Steve Martin, a veteran host of the ceremony, and Alec Baldwin, a newcomer, will be sharing the hosting duties for the 82nd Academy Awards. Says Martin: “I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin.”

In the Jackman news I mused that perhaps the Academy would want to revisit their past trend of sharing the hosting duties (which they’re also doing with the increased best picture noms), and now that it’s actually happened I’m finding the news makes me a bit more excited for this years ceremony than usual. The last time we saw multiple hosts was in 1986 when Chevy Chase, Paul Hogan, and Goldie Hawn shared the task. Multiple hosts were also featured in several other Academy Awards throughout the 80s, and it was actually the norm during the 70s and 50s.

As for Martin and Baldwin, I think the two could bring a great dynamic to the show. My memory is a bit fuzzy on Martin’s performance as the host of the 2000 and 2002 ceremonies, but Baldwin is one of my favorite SNL hosts, and I’m sure the Oscars could allow him to use that charisma on a larger scale. The two are also appearing together in Nancy Meyer’s upcoming film It’s Complicated with Meryl Streep.

I’m also hoping that this next ceremony will remind us of Martin’s better days. Aside from his brilliant guest spot on 30 Rock, I haven’t liked anything he’s done since Bowfinger (and no, I’m not a Shopgirl apologist). Many of his recent works have nearly driven me to the point of self harm, so I seriously hope he takes this chance to remind us why we all loved him decades ago.

And for the lot of you hoping that Neal Patrick Harris would get the gig, I feel your pain.

Discuss: Do you think Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will make a good hosting pair? Does this make you more or less excited for this year’s ceremonies?

They play well off each other whenever they appear together on SNL as rivals.
  • I'm half excited. I, too, have had almost all memory of Steve Martin being funny buried under the shit that he's done lately.

I liked Steve when he hosted, I think being in front of a live audience suits him, takes him back to his roots as they say. Sounds good enough for me. Bring on the five hour award show! <ugh>

I love this decision. Love. Love Love.

And although I would agree that Martin hasn't done anything good since Bowfinger, I must mention how much I adored him as Tina Fey's boss in Baby Mama. He really did shine in that role, a part which made me long for the good old days of his career.

The Oscars are a joke. 10 Best Picture Nominees this year? And those sycophantic speeches delivered by former Best Actor winners to the nominees last year were just shameful. I wanted to puke. Not even the combo of Baldwin and Martin can save this sinking ship of a ceremony.
  • I hear what you're saying, but I found those speeches worked better than the short-snippet clips and hurried applause-- and it is only for the majors. Maybe if the speeches were shorter and more concise? Otherwise, what else could they do? There has to be SOME theatrics. It's the Oscars after all! ;o)

I loved the little speeches, I really was excited to see who was going to come out and do the directors but they didn't give speeches for those.
  • i thought the speeches were kinda cool - BUT - although I understand the running time + mass audience's interest concerns, it just felt so weird to do that for actors and not for other really important jobs like cinematographer

Ouch. Forgot about the 10 nominees. Good grief that show is gonna be 7 hours long this year.
  • If they make you want to puke then don't watch them. If you were nominated for an Oscar I bet you'd be at that ceremony in a heartbeat (despite calling is a sinking ship of a ceremony).

Although I do agree, 10 Best Picture Nominees is a bit absurd.

  • haha love it! baldwin rules.
  • “I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin.” Classic. I look forward to Steve hosting again, and Alec Baldwin is sure match Steve for humor and charisma. They'll do a tremendous job.

im wondering now if the Oscars are going to do the "past nominees standing in a half moon, honoring the current nominees" thing again. It was one of the highlights from last year i think.
  • unexpected, but awesome

Love me some Alec Baldwin, but i will never forgive Steve Martin for the god awful Pink Panther turds.
  • I recently saw Steve Martin at Walt Disney Concert Hall with the Lone Canyon Rangers the music was awesome, but more relevantly he was hilarious he spent about a 3rd of the time making jokes, it was great. I think he has still got it at least in terms of making a crowd laugh.
  • Bad idea.

Multiple hosts never worked in the past, which is why they abandoned the practice.

A few years ago Jon Stewart hosted, and a few days before he was on the radio with Howard Stern. He told Howard that he'd been watching tapes of older Oscar shows for inspiration. He mentioned that the worst shows were always the ones with multiple hosts.

Steve Martin is a great host. He always does a great job. Baldwin? hmm. Maybe. He can be funny. But they should pick one and dismiss the other. Learn from the past. Multiple hosts doesn't work.

That's cool... at least we'll have Alec Baldwin up there to stop Steve Martin from playing his banjo (I still remember when he played it on SNL).

Saw Martin in concert a while ago and he certainly still has the witty banter and comic genius in him. And like the article says, Baldwin is one of the best SNL hosts out there. Very high hopes for this duo. Very high.
