joss-whedon

Following up on the previous news about the Terminator franchise rights being up for sale, self-proclaimed “Very Important Hollywood Mogul” Joss Whedon has penned a hilarious note to the franchise owners in an attempt to acquire the franchise with a mighty fine $10,000 check. Says Whedon: “That’s four — FOUR! — zeroes after that one. That’s to show you I mean business. And I mean show business.”

He goes on to list the myriad of brilliant ideas he has for the franchise, including  Terminator of the Rings (”Yeah, what if he time-travelled TOO far… back to when there was dragons and wizards?”), liberal use of Summer Glau, and a throat lozenge for a certain Mr. Bale.

While hilarious, the piece could also be seen as spitting on the grave of the recently departed Sarah Connor Chronicles. It was very clear come last season that Fox was willing to only keep one Friday sci-fi show on the air, and that ended up being Whedon’s Dollhouse. Ultimately, I think Fox made the right choice because Dollhouse has gotten steadily better since the midpoint of season one. Sarah Connor was good campy fun, but Dollhouse has a greater chance of approaching greatness, as episodes like “Epitaph One”  and “Echoes” have shown.

This open letter is certainly meant in jest, but the fanboy in me can’t help but wonder what a Whedon-related Terminator would look like. With “Epitaph One”, I got a sense that Whedon was building up Dollhouse to be his take on Terminator-esque story, but it would still be interesting to see what he could do with the franchise proper.

All I know is that there’s a greater chance we’d see a good Terminator story if they sold Whedon the rights for $10,000, than we would when the franchise eventually gets sold off millions. But I’m sure at this point the current owners, the now bankrupt Halcyon Holding Group, could care less about the quality of the series.

  • The Batman voice gags never get old. Twit.
  • So Dollhouse ISN'T canceled right? I still find people saying that it is, and some saying that it isn't. That scared me back when.
Still interesting that they made 14 episodes, Fox paid for 13, and only aired 12.
  • Given the current ratings slump, Dollhouse probably won't be renewed next season. Even if it is, that would probably be the last season we see.

Is it just me, or is slotting a show on Friday night the best way to kill it? This show would work great Mon-Thurs when people are actually at home watching TV.

I know, DVR makes time slots less important. But still, Friday night is a dumping ground.
  • Friday Night Death has been common knowledge for many years now. If a show airs on Fridays, it's likely been cancelled, even if the network says otherwise.

The only show I can think of that's survived Fridays is The X-Files. Can anyone think of another survivor?

Fox burying a good show? never.

    Enrique Garcia : Smallville.
  • Katie
No, it's canceled. It's just hasn't been announced yet. When you get pulled for sweeps, you're done.

No. I don't want Whedon to start another project till after we get a Dr.Horrible something. TV, Sequel movie, i don't care. I WANT MORE.

But good on Joss for writing that note.I got a good laugh.

I'd take another McG movie before a Whedon.. um.. no, nevermind. Kill the franchise already. Overkill it (since McG already did his part)

Joss Whedon wrote Alien: Resurrection, so he's had his crack at a James Cameron-esque sci-fi sequel. He failed.

That said, his letter is pretty funny.

If you've read his script for AR, it's tone is far closer to Firefly than to what we got with Jeunet's interpretation.

    Stuwils,

So it would have been boring and aimed at 23 year old virgins?

I think a Whedonized T:SCC would be great. Especially after that cliffhanger they left out on.
  • One of the guys that wrote Toy Story, ladies and gentlemen.
  • Sarah Connor Chronicles deserves to have its grave spit on more, that show was terrible
  • Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles was a great show even though it had some off episodes. Cool fight scenes, interesting characters, great score, and the second season built up to an epic cliffhanger.
  • I enjoy Joss Whedon but this shit belongs in the page 3 section. This should not be getting as much attention as it is.
  • The Pwny Express
Seems like kind of a douche.
  • AWhitman
what has he done that's so great?
  • waqman
Nothing really. He just has a very cult fanbase that worships him.

Unlike Cameron who has...actually proven himself.
  • henrik4075
Yeah. Who gives a crap about shows like Firefly, Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Dr. Horrible.
  • crack me up
i bet joss whedon finds this hilarious note he wrote to be quite hilarious too.

@ Enrique Garcia ~Married with Children. Used to set up the old VCR to tape that bad larry!

Whedon was a big supporter of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. In fact he thought that they made the wrong choice.
