How to Train Your Dragon Movie Trailer

How to train your dragon
Dreamworks Animation has released the first movie trailer for Chris Sander’s How to Train Your Dragon. For those of you who don’t reccognize the name, Sanders directed Lilo & Stitch, and the unfinished American Dog (which was the initial development for what became Bolt). Sanders is now making a home for himself over at Dreamworks Animation, and you can certainly see the Dreamworks influence.

The voice acting seems a bit out of place, as with most of DreamWorks Animated films, it seems like they are casting names to be the characters, rather than an actor who can play the character. I love Jay Baruchel, but for some reason I don’t completely buy him in this film, with this character design and animation — for me it just doesn’t match up. Watch the trailer embedded after the jump. As always, leave your thoughts in the comments below.

From the studio that brought you “Shrek,” “Madagascar” and “Kung Fu Panda” comes “How To Train Your Dragon” — an adventure comedy set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, based on the book by Cressida Cowell. The story centers around a Viking teenager, who lives on the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. Initiation is coming, and this is his one chance to prove his worthiness to his tribe and father. But when he encounters, and ultimately befriends, an injured dragon, his world is turned upside down. The voice cast includes Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Craig Ferguson, Kristen Wiig, and America Ferrera.

Looks pretty bad to me, a shame considering how great a movie with that cast should be.
  • kfizz
I was wondering who's voice that was. It does not quite fit as well as other dream works CG films. But that is because he does the voiceover too. I know who it is now it is Jay Baruchel from knocked up and the Apatow gang.
  • as far as kids movies go it looks interesting. better than shrek 2 or 3.
  • MarkoP
It doesn't look that great, but on the other hand it's not making me roll eyes in dispointed either. At least it looks like they are straying away from over the top wise cracking animals.
  • capawesome
It looks great. But I agree that leads voice just doesn't "fit".
  • It doesn't look as good as I hoped, but great animation.
Why did they mix vikings and dragons? I've never heard anything about dragons in norse mythology or nordic legends.
  • capawesome
Please look up Norse mythology again.
  • Pete (original)
    this actually looks kinda fun.
  • mayh3mx
Well to be honest i thought Kung Fu Panda looked like crap when i saw the trailer, and loved it. So i have some high hopes for this one...
  • lilo looked like shit too, but it actually was pretty good....then again Lilo was greatly improved by last minute rewrites with the late jon ranft.
  • johnbailey
First, his name was JOE Ranft, not Jon and he never did any rewrites on Lilo and Stitch. Get your facts right.

WHY AREN'T THEY DOING PERSIAN ACCENTS?!

...wait, did I miss the Prince of Persia thread? Nevermind. American accents in European stories are totally cool.
  • probot
    LMAO! AWESOME!
  • at least it makes sense, right? American movie -> american accents
  • jerry seinfeld
yes. don't like american accents? don't watch american-made movies.
  • shadow
The dragons do not talk, that alone raises my hopes for the film, because it forces Dreamworks to make the characters communicate without words.
  • Fir3Wolf
DreamWorks Animation has always been hit or miss with me when it comes to there movies. I liked the first Shrek and also Kung Fu Panda so I have so high hopes for this one as well. Trailer didn't make me laugh or anything but still looks alright.
  • Sketch
I like it. I like the designs. Doesn't look like the usual bad fare Dreamworks comes out with.
  • Meli_V
This doesn't look very good at all. Shame because with a title like that you'd think you'd be getting something that looks more fun.
  • Dreamworks vs Pixar
  • autonomousgerm
    Yeah, it does.
  • jangryman
  • YazzyDream
Hahaha, I think that looks pretty good. The story looks like a lot of fun. But you are totally right about the voice acting. It sounds so... bland! Tsk.
  • freemachine
    Cool dragon design.
  • VelocityAtrocity
I don't like the design of the dragon at all. Looks very cheap.
  • claire
kinda looks like a pokemon, no?
  • dagreenman18
I like the animation and the premise could work, but i HATE his voice and, Knowing Dreamworks, the chances of this being anything but meh are slim. But, Chris Sanders is behind it, so i will watch because Lilo and Stitch is a damn good movie.
  • jerry seinfeld
wow, that's where i've seen that dragon before... looks quite similar to lilo... or stitch.
  • This actually really fun! Especially the visuals, although I'll wait to pass judgement on Baruchel
  • johnbailey
A little research would have told you this movie was written and directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, the same duo who also wrote and directed Lilo and Stitch. Sanders did not work solo on either film. I can't believe so many people are critiquing a film based on the first trailer! If anything, with DeBlois and Sanders making this film, the story is almost guaranteed to be far better than the usual Dreamworks fare.
  • greatm31
That's giving off some pretty nasty Delgo vibes.
  • I thought the dragon trying to smile was a nice touch. I think that's where the trailer won me over. Seems like there could actually be some heart to this movie! I guess I'm a sucker for people befriending animals who can't talk in animated features.
  • Mike
Yeah... this is why Pixar is the greatest film studio of the past 25 years and Dreamworks is... Dreamworks.
  • Ian
Not surprisingly the comments here are about as sad as the ones at aint it cool. Really, why even bother to leave a comment if all you are going to say is 'looks bad'. One commenter even compared the animation to delgo. At least at aint it cool they said it looks as bad as battle for terra (actually I am not sure which would be more insulting to the animators at dreamworks)

The truth is, dreamworks has always had some pretty excellent animation; it is their storytelling that is lacking. It looks like that will change with this one, as it is directed by proven and great storytellers. I just re-watched 'Lilo' earlier this year and I think it's one of the finest kid's movies of the last 20 years. So count me in for this one.
  • Patricia
i want to see it!!!!..... im curious
  • The guys voice annoys me and the dragon design really takes me out of it.
  • hooohooohhoooo
i liked it very much and i thought it was fully sick
  • Jasmidge
It looks cool, but it doesent seem ANYTHING like the books :/. Toothless should be half the size of hippups arm.
  • Emmie
What are they doing to the BOOK? Now this sounds like a typical story.
