Got a Few Million Bucks? Buy the Terminator Rights!

The Terminator

Little over a month ago we told you that rights for the Terminator franchise were probably going to hit the auction block to pay off debts for the Halcyon Holding Group, which bought the rights in 2007 for $25m. Now that has come to pass. Rights to the series are for sale, and the list of interested bidders is long and, for the most part, not at all surprising.

Nikki Finke reports that every big Hollywood studio is interested in the purchase, as are Summit and Media Rights Capital. Sony has the greatest interest, she says, as the auction is prepped for later this month. The package to be sold is fairly complete, as it includes the rights to “new Terminator films, TV program and other spin-offs.” (Video games? One would assume so, and perhaps this sale will lead to the eventual release of a decent licensed Terminator game.)

Can’t wait to see what someone pays for this. Again, Halcyon picked up the rights for $25m two years ago, and Terminator: Salvation has done $380m worldwide. Not the smash that was expected, and quite obviously not the one that was needed, given that Halcyon immediately went into Chapter 11 once the film was done. What’s the series worth, then? Halcyon’s Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek have claimed the package is worth up to $60m now, but that seems exorbitant.

Given the performance of both the Sarah Connor Chronicles and Salvation ($380m worldwide against a $200m production budget and accompanying marketing budget really isn’t much) I’d guess that this sale will top out around $40m, if that. When T2 came out it was easy to see why it dominated, with those flashy CGI effects that were so new at the time and Arnie returning to an early role. But Arnie’s not in the picture for now and effects don’t sell the way they used to. So what’s in the Terminator franchise to really draw in an audience to make a massive rights purchase worthwhile?

Well, I guess their was no point in Terminator Salvation then. This is why films should never be planned into a trilogy. Now we'll never see Conner take down skynet like they were a cinematogropher, haha!
  • Bring Back Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles!!!!
  • anthonyb
James Cameron should buy them and never let another living soul make anymore Terminator movies grrrrrrr!!!!
  • Jimmy G.
I'm going to buy the rights and make another Terminator film which begins with John Connor waking up, and realizing that Salvation was all a bad dream... a REALLY bad, bad dream.

And then take up where Part 3 left off. I might even create a second evil Skynet program called McGee.
  • kirklazarus97
Yes! Please call the evil Skynet program McG!!!
  • Reniassance_Man
Great idea, except you need to go back to Terminator 2 to really try to undo the damage to the franchise.
  • starscream9289
I heard Michael Bay is the top bider......

    Where's that 'Don't Like' button? ;-)

I'd be down for more explosions and robots courtesy of Michael Bay.
  • I will buy the rights and make the movie that should of been made, opening scene robot travels back to when sarah is a baby, they kill her and credits roll.

Ha, ha. But seriously Part 4 should have been ALL about the search for his adolescent father. The machines are systematically annihilating people looking for him, and even John doesn't know who he is or what he looks like. It could have been a good chase movie -- like the rest of them.
  • existenz
The machines should not even know that Kyle Reese is his father. If you remember from the first movie, they only knew that his mother was named Sarah Connor and lived in L.A. Didn't know her middle name, occupation, anything. And yet now the machines somehow know his father's name?

    Retarded work by McG.
  • well isn't it obvious existenz? the machines have an IQ of -3
  • Gil Brooks
My name is on the list. I offered $5, which is twice what it's worth, post-Terminator Salvation.
  • spderweb
they should make a terminator romantic comedy.
  • BOB
Before the "T3 vs TS" debate will start again, let me just say this.. T3 at least had a great, dark ballsy ending. What did TS had? Oh, that's right.. NOTHING!
  • existenz
    Harvester. Just kidding.
  • The Great Cambino
I wonder who'll play John Connor this time...
  • Jimmy G.
    Shia LaBoef.
  • Finke now reporting that Joss Whedon put in a bid... link includes a letter from Whedon with his plans for the franchise :P http://www.deadline.com/hollywood/joss-whedon-m...
  • The Great Cambino
That was hilarious. I forgot how awesome Joss Whedon is.
  • Rob0729
Hopefully whoever buys it ignores the last two movies and gives us the post Skynet coming aware sequel to the first two movies that we deserve. I want to see the James Cameron timeline where John Connor comes to power and leads the fight against Skynet while struggling with the fact that he is training his father to go back in time to die so he can be born. That is what will make a good Terminator movie, not female terminators who can grow their boobs or the story about a cyborg with John Connor being a secondary character. Please do not let McG or Jonathan Mostow anywhere near these movies.

I agree with Russ. Forty million. Maybe fifty.
  • laslo hollyfeld
somebody needs to buy the rights to the franchise and put it in the hands of neil blomkamp with a screenplay centered entirely on the perpetual night, purple laser gun future shown in flashbacks in T1 and T2....his style mirrors that used in those flashback scenes.....
  • Whoever picks it up should revisit the gritty nature of the first installment and forget about the 'gloss' of T2 -- it just cannot be achieved anymore.
  • I found a piece of string and a cheerio, i think thats all i need to buy this dying franchise
  • Be very afraid - Michael Bay has enough money on his person to buy this outright.
  • bigtones
In all honesty I'd pay to see a Michael Bay-directed Terminator film. It would be idiotic and predictable but at least you'd get a decent action pic out of it.
  • Marvel-Man
Man, I hope Arnie actually comes back and saves the franchise that created him.

I don't care if he wastes all of California's money, it'll be worth it to see Arnold back!

Note: Altough, it'd be nice to see a hot actress time travel back instead of Arnold. I actually liked the "grown boobs" scene...
