The Road Trailer #2

theroad1a

Dimension and the Weinstein brothers will finally open John Hillcoat’s filmed version of Cormac McCarthy’s novel The Road on November 25. We’ve seen one trailer already, but that one was out back in May. Now there’s a new trailer just one month before the film opens. Check it out after the break.

This trailer is better. It has less misdirection than the first one. There are still some small flashes of apocalyptic elements that were never seen (or even directly implied) in McCarthy’s original text. And we see Charlize Theron’s character, present only in flashbacks in the novel, edited into the trailer’s timeline in a manner that suggests she’s a more active part of the film than is really the case.

In the first half, this is probably closer to the final film than the first trailer. It is bleak, and seemingly hopeless — the message I get out of the first minute is that the characters are holding out to actually be able to hope for something, rather than really carrying hope alive.

But then the second half comes with the sweeping music, big epic strings and horns laid over dialogue like “You have to keep carrying the fire,” and the movie appears to be a much more uplifiting and sappy movie that it really is.

Selling this movie is tough; it’s grimy and dirty and bleak, and who the hell wants to see that just as fall is about to snap into winter, especially after a year like this one? (I do, actually — I really want to see The Road.) But I’d like to think there are more honest ways to get the true nature of the film across without putting people off.

See the trailer embedded below, or catch it at Yahoo in HD.

  • In an alternate reality, I know I've watched this and liked it because in that world, The road kept it's original release date.
  • Rockie
my friend caught this film last night. she said it was one of the most faithful adaptations out there. i'm half way through the book and hope she's right.

hillcoat has my undivided after the proposition
  • She's right. It's nearly scene-by-scene faithful to the book.
  • That's good to hear. I read the book about a couple of weeks ago and it was without a doubt, one of the best reads I've ever had.

I'd have to say that I didn't like the music in the trailer. Knowing what I know about the ending, it's completely off base. Terrible choice for music to be honest.
  • PalmliX
Ya I have to agree, everything was going great, then this music comes in, and it's just really out of place, is that from the actual score?
  • richCie
i doubt its from the soundtrack doesnt sound like Cave and Ellis to be honest.

check out the assassination of Jesse James soundtrack.
  • bubbajosh
I completely agree...one of the best modern books I've ever read...and if the film's even halfway faithful, I think it'll be an Oscar contender.

Thus, the Weinstein's motivation for pushing this sucker back.
  • No it is not.

    (Spoilers)

In the book the boy and the man wear masks over their faces because of all the soot in the air. Most of the people in the book do as well.

It's usually snowing. Snow is constantly on the ground.

In the house, they never find the bloody killing room like in the clip released for The Road already. The Man doesn't tell the boy to kill himself in the house. He tells him to do so outside of the house while hiding in the snow after they have escaped and may be found by the cannibals.
  • Wow. Psycho. Listen carefully. I said "nearly scene-by-scene." Which it is. Moreso than any recent adaptation I can think of. I did not say "identically detail-by-detail" or "syllable-by-freaking-syllable."
  • simalex2000
i had a chance to see this film at the Austin Film Festival. IT IS AMAZING. i thought the score was a little irritating (heavy handed, maybe) but otherwise ... an absolutely incredible film.
  • authentic.imitation
i saw it at the austin film fest, too. it's a very good film. the wife's role has been expanded, but it works. otherwise, the film is quite faithful to the novel in both narrative and spirit. in fact, i would say it actually improves the pacing of the story. mortensen and smit-mcphee are fantastic. i wouldn't be surprised if they both snag oscar noms.
  • Dominocracy
That was even worse than the first one and just as misleading. That sappy music at the end was cringe inducing and gives you the wrong sense of what this movie is going to be about. Now we're gonna have to deal with people who never read the book either:

A- Going to see this because they think it's an action movie

    or

B- Going to see this because they think it's a cheesy Lifetime hugfest drama coming of age film with the backdrop of post-apocalypse America

Either way, this movie is gonna tank when both of those groups find out what this film is about. It's a damn shame too, because the book is easily one of the best things I've ever read.
  • riverman
If the only people who go to see THE ROAD are people who have read the novel, the movie would "tank" anyway.
If the movie is good, then many people will appreciate it- even if they expected an action flick or Lifetime hug-fest.

Have YOU ever seen a film based on a book that you had not read? Did that film end up being different than its marketing led to believe? Did you enjoy the film anyway?

No one should care whether ticket-buyers are ignorami or have different expectations. Marketing THE ROAD is no different, or more deceptive than marketing for most movies.
  • Kubes
I think the movie will be awesome and will most likely follow the book, as all have said; the only off putting thing here is I am pretty sure I heard the Wilhelm scream near the en (2:10)
  • Rockie
    wasn't a wilhelm

more like the ninth configuration bar fight yell or the mountain dew yell
  • Togo
It's the Howie Long scream. Classic!
  • Togo
Also known as the Ninth Configuration scream.
  • knux
Does anyone know the name of the yell toward the end of the trailer. Sound like "yeerrrrr!" It's not the Willhelm. I've heard it in tons of movies...
  • The Great Cambino
I just call it the Dark Forces scream, 'cause it was in that game, but it definitely predates that quite some time. I don't know if it has a name or not.
You're right though, it is definitely not the Wilhelm.
  • Don
to me it sounds like a Tie-Fighter
  • rcblinker
  • MIND OVER FATE
The music at the end was terrible... If it weren't for the fact that I already really, really want to see this movie, I would have been completely turned off. Sounds like the soundtrack to another crappy sports triumph film, not the post apocalyptic tragedy I'm looking for.
  • Lasternom
Movie looks great and really looking forward to it, but the more i see of the marketing and the score the more i want to avoid the movie.
  • RussFischer
The music in the second half is, I believe, not from the film. I have the Cave/Ellis soundtrack compilation disc (White Lunar) with much of the score and it's not on there. If it was, I would have thrown the disc away.
  • RJBlakeAAU
I really want to see the movie but jesus christ. That score was one of the worst things I've ever heard.
  • stb247
The music in the end is by James Horner. Don't know, which soundtrack (any info would be appreciated), but that's his style for sure.

I'm pretty sure that scream is from Pulp Fiction (after Jackson's speech).
  • kfizz
The music is not bad. It just seems like it dates the movie and really does not fit. It feels like superman or something. I think it sorta sounds like mutual of omaha wild kingdom theme or something.
  • Freakazoidberg
the music is a bit to uplifting
    anyways
    im excited
had to read it for class and i loved it
    the 1:34-39
are exactly how i imagined it
  • waqman
Hell yeah. Can't wait to watch this film. Hillcoat/Mortensen/McCarthy/Cave

there's nothing bad about that right there. Mortensen will win his long deserved Oscar now.
  • Rocko
To the people bitching about the superb music: watch more westerns.
  • PalmliX
When I think of western soundtracks I think of Morricone, did he ever sound like that?
  • Fir3Wolf
Great trailer. I can't wait to see this.
  • snakedawgg
    SPOILER:

WHY oh WHY did they show Guy Pearce's character in the trailer? Anyone who has read the book would know how important a role he plays...

And also, even if you hadn't read the book, you would spend the entire movie waiting for Guy Pearce to appear...
  • ndrage85
edit: sorry, possible spoilers. Sorta. Not really.

I was kind of wondering that myself. But at the same time, they kind of have to show him to market the movie. If you have recognizable names in your movie, the company is going to make you bank on them, and for that, they'd have to show a quick clip of him. I thought what you did too, you're going to be waiting the entire movie going, "Where's Guy Pearce?" if you haven't read the book.

It's also misleading somewhat to have these names featured in the trailer, because anyone who has read the book knows none of these other characters really have much time in the story. But once again, marketing.

Oh, and for those who are saying this is faithful to the book, that's good to hear, but also odd considering a story i read over a year ago. Rollingstone did a little article about the movie when it was supposed to come out last year, and they said that Hillcoat was maybe changing parts of the book and the ending. He said he believed it was more important to stay true to the tone and the message of the book, not the exact way the book went. The Rollingstone writer then went on to say what I was thinking: coming from anyone else this might be a cause to worry, but from the man who made the under-appreciated The Proposition, you feel alright about it.

I guess we'll finally get to see soon enough.

Oh, and I'm really looking forward to the movie, but this trailer just like the last, didn't really do it for me. It's a good thing I've read the book.

"Oh, and I'm really looking forward to the movie, but this trailer just like the last, didn't really do it for me. It's a good thing I've read the book."

  • richCie
    well that looks shit.
  • sebby
...is the score from a robert zemeckis christmas movie?
  • glenn
HORRIBLE trailer. For those who have read the book you know that at no point does this music match any emotion you felt while reading it. The first trailer worked much better even if it made people i showed it to think the whole movie is about running from a gang. But then again I have no idea how else they could market it. Very frustrating to see their marketing attempts.
  • Anti-Septic
This looks amazing, cannot wait to see it. Viggo Mortenson looks like he will deliver once again.
  • GusMastrapa
The canned scream sound effect in the last bit of the trailer made me laugh out loud.
  • ake
This is shaping up to be a sleeper hit. The cast is great, I always go out of my way to see a Guy Pearce part. I had no idea that Duvall was in this until this trailer. Seems a little heavyhanded in the back half, but overall totally looks like a great adaptation.
  • Mattikus
That music in the trailer is absolutely rediculous. It completely ruins the tone of the film.
