Robert Zemeckis has been loosening us up for a Who Framed Roger Rabbit sequel for some months now, letting slip the odd reference here and there that he’s been keen to give the follow on a good crack. In April he said that he had a good idea for the second installment; on July 22nd he said he’d been discussing the film with Bob Hoskins; on July 23rd he told the Comic-Con audience that he could neither deny nor confirm any plans for a sequel.

Now he’s just come out and revealed that not only is he gunning for another run at the funny Bunny, but also that writing on the new screenplay already currently underway. Purist fans of the original will probably jump for joy at his revelation on who is wielding the pen, because it’s none other than the scribes of part one, Peter Seaman and Jeffrey Price.

I think that Zemeckis has now been sufficiently loose lipped that we can start to read between the lines a little. Let’s rake over some of his quotes after this break.

We all know that Zemeckis is the leading proponent of performance capture cinema, in terms of output if arguably not in terms of quality. Is he planning for Roger 2 to utilise these techniques? Here’s the salient quotage, pieced together from various interviews a line at a time:

I’ll tell you what is buzzing around in my head now that we have the ability -the digital tools, performance capture - I’m starting to think about Roger Rabbit.

The 2D characters from the original movie will remain 2D. They will not be dimensionalized. Not to say there wont be 3D.

I’m really committed to getting this art form [performance capture] off of the ground, but of course I would [shoot live action again] and I’m never going to say never to anything, but right now though I really want to make sure that we get this out there so that younger filmmakers have these absolutely breathtaking tools that they can use.

A picture is starting to take shape, don’t you think? A Roger Rabbit film that will use motion capture and 2D animation… or maybe motion capture to create the 2D animation? Wow. That’d be something a bit different from Zemeckis recent attempts to plough through the valley of the uncanny. Can’t imagine how he’d approach anything like the quality of work that animators would generate, however. I love mo-cap but it’s definitely not a replacement for animation.

MTV, who gathered the Seaman and Price information, are promising that they have more news to come and that they’re going to roll it over the next few days. Hit teases. I’ll be keeping an eye on their reports though, to see just how much more shading we can add to this sketch of Zemeckis’ plans.

Zemeckis should shoot it like the original, 2D animation and live action. Motion Capture is cool, but not for Roger Rabbit.

i absolutely agree. there is no place for mo-cap in toontown. in fact, i fucking hate mo-cap: it just looks absolutely ridiculous, and i'd hate to see RZ's hard on for the medium ruin what could be one of the greatest sequels ever.

I rather not have them use motion capture. If you're going to have 3d characters stick to how the memorable 3d characters have been animated before (keyframe).

It would be really cool to have 2d character interact with 3d characters though. Classic Disney/WB characters interacting with Pixar characters would make me happy to no end.
  • Please please please Zemeckis. Don't use purely motion capture for the animated characters. This is your chance to help revive 2D animation (along with The Princess and the Frog).
Why not address the issue of 2D characters hating 3D characters? Then you can have the best of both worlds.
  • i think I was at the same the Q&A.... I was at a screening today where Zemeckis said they had a writer for it and it would be 2D (I was totally the nerd who asked about it)

    Photo-realistic rabbit? count me in!
  • jehosophat
Photorealistic exaggeration of basic human & rabbit anatomical geometry?

    Count me OUT!

    Agreed.

I would love to see a Roger Rabbit sequel, but I'm wary of mo-cap. It's like Zemeckis has found a new toy and he won't play with anything else. Like James Cameron and 3-D. I don't think Mo-cap is right for Roger because the essence of this style of cartoon is in squash and stretch; movements that are exaggerations, and are distinctly NON-human. Maybe mo-capping for humanoids like Jessica might work. Unless the essence of the story is that some human gets "tooned" somehow.

Which leads me to point number 2: There was already a script for a sequel years ago. Why not just go ahead with that?

    Because it wasn't very good.

    Can we resurrect Judge Doom?

man roger rabbit is one of my all time favs of the 80s classics. I been reading the news the past few months that a sequel may be in the works. I totally hope it will happen. I agree with you guys roger and any other classic animated characters who may return should be that 2D look to keep their charm and look. But we could bring in a plot of 3D guys if they are setting this in present day. Though since the original was set in the late 30s, at most if they get bob back in the film it would be based in the 60s maybe 70s. But color me curious to see how things turn out.

They really could set it at any time, couldn't they? Toons don't appear to age at all. But what does any of that mean for Hoskins? If he IS in it, or if Zemeckis is thinking he could be, then I can't imagine it would be set any later than 1950.
  • Dr_Gonzo
I'd say get Nick Park and Aardman involved. They're the top dogs in mocap.

"MTV, who gathered the Seaman" <-- LOL
  • MarkoP
    Uhm, that's stop motion.
  • Dr_Gonzo
Oops, I mean't stop motion. My bad. Either way just get them involved somehow... :D
  • evilmonkeyg1
I loved the first, the sequal would be amazing. I just hope it's still 2D and live action with maybe some 3D characters thrown in...... as the villains. I feel like I am writing fan fiction but damn that would be insane, the war of the toons!
  • evilmonkeyg1
Shit I double posted, sorry can't delete.

KEYFRAME! KEYFRAME! KEYFRAME!!!! Someone please put an end to Robert Zemckis obsession with mocap! While you're at it... stop the making of a Who Framed Roger Rabbit sequel. Robert Zemeckis you hack!

I just happened to watch Roger Rabbit again the other day, and a few things stand out:

EVERYTHING animated in the movie is COMPLETELY exaggerated & out of proportion.

Furthermore, this exaggeration is what makes the animated characters BELIEVABLE.

Mo-Cap is like going back to Roto-scoping, the way they did with Snow White, & quickly learned was not the most effective way to make believable animated characters.

Sure, Jessica Rabbits hands were traced over a live actress, particularly when she interacted w/ Ed Asner in several scenes.

But the idea of Mo-Capping 2-3 characters has to be approached very carefully.

Would it be to get the lip movements correct? That might be a reasonable excuse.

But fundamentally, cartoons by definition are exagerrations of realistic proportions: Roger Rabbit & Jessica Rabbit being the two extremes of this.

A plot pitting 2-D against 3-D charcters would be pretty interesting, though -particularly if it brought attention to quality 2-D animation once again.

Lord knows there are tons of talented out-of-work 2-D animators out there just waiting to show off their stuff!
  • Ashitaka
Haha I always get Bob Hoskins and Ed Asner mixed up too - especially Mary Tyler Moore era Ed Asner and late 80s Bob Hoskins.

I was reading Hoskins' IMDB page and he's voicing Fezziwig in RZ's A Christmas Carol. Maybe this is a sign that they want to work together a little bit before starting the sequel.

Oh and Ed Asner would make a great Father for Hoskins in the sequel. Get some Ford/Connery chemistry going Last Crusade style. "Dad!" "What?" "Dddad!" "WHAT?" "DDDAD!" "WWHAT?"
  • Blizz Blazz
I read that Zemeckis is going to set this one in the early 80's, and Roger Rabbit's new partner will be a hip hop bear named F'Shizzle, who will breakdance and DJ. In the opening shot, Hoskins character blows his own head off with a gun after his wife runs off with a cartoon horse.

All motion capture 3D, sadly. Still, I can't wait.
  • Wait-- he's ripping into The Beatles' Yellow Submarine by remaking/reanimating it but proceeds with a sequel for Roger Rabbit? Why not just remake that as well, ass-wipe?!!
  • Plantastic
Here is something great I found at Disney Land tour.
The TickleMe Plant, It's a real plant that suddenly closes it's leaves and lowers its branches when TIckled, This is real, yet so animated you won't believe your eyes. You can see the video and grow your own at

It absolutely has to be 2D animation. I want a feeling of nostalgia when I watch it, not a massive feeling of disappointment.
  • so psyched for this
