Sin City 2 has been a project sitting on the horizon for several years. It has started to seem like one of those things that co-director Robert Rodriguez likes to keep on the table because he knows it gets fan attention, while not necessarily being a film he really plans to make.

Now producer Stephen L’Heureux says that Sin City 2 will go into production at the end of 2010, and that Frank Miller will follow it with a film version of Hard Boiled, the uber-detailed and hyper-violent comic written by Miller and drawn by Geoff Darrow.

Mania has the report. They offer the news that the sequel will be based on an original script by Miller, rather than drawing from any of the original comics material he produced a decade ago. He also explains that Miller is also currently scripting Hard Boiled, and that he’s attached to direct. “We’re still developing it,” L’Heureux says. “We got the project in turnaround from Warner Bros and Frank. It’s such a pleasure to work with someone like Frank Miller.” Let’s take one step at a time, eh? After The Spirit, Miller has some provin’ to do.

Now, according to Mania Robert Rodriguez is planning to co-direct Sin City 2 with Frank Miller. But recent reports have suggested that the next priority for Rodriguez after Machete and Predators are done will actually be Spy Kids 4. Why? As Variety’s report on the Short Circuit remake recently said, franchises are a priority for Dimension right now and the studio has got a good hold on the director. The Weinsteins need cash flow and Spy Kids 4 is evidently seen as something that will generate it.

So, yeah, Sin City 2 may well be moving forward. But if the timeline places it as a go within 2010, don’t be too surprised if Miller directs alone while Rodriguez produces it and spends more of his time making Spy Kids 4 and Nervewrackers.

hard boiled....oh god. detail overload. i hope they can pull that shit off. as for sin city 2....bout damn time.
  • On The Hour Man
It look like Russ has attributed quotes about Hard Boiled to Sin City 2. Read before you write?
  • AWhitman
spy kids 4 over sin city? ugh.

robert needs to at least co-direct sin city 2.
  • fanboy_d
don't worry, i don't think frank miller will be permitted to direct it alone
  • probot
after the mess that was The Spirit, I don't think Miller should direct anything alone.
  • Gary
cuz there's be no confusion between John Woo's film, Hard Boiled, and Frank Miller's Hard Boiled? Besides, I thought Frank was really Matt Drudge or Fake Steve Jobs and not really a real person. Heh.
  • Yoji
As time goes on I just care less and less about Sin City 2. Either stop fucking teasing it or really attempt to get it together somehow; c'mon Rodriguez!
  • ANC
Slaps Face With Hand... Or how about Rodriguez produces spy kids 4 and directs Sin City 2...
  • The Great Cambino
I don't know if basing Sin City 2 on an original script is a good idea. Frank Miller hasn't written anything particularly good in a loooong time. Why not A Dame to Kill For or even Hell and Back?

And who in their right mind would greenlight a Hard Boiled movie directed by Miller after The Spirit? Miller doesn't seem like a good director.
  • I'd say "not a good director" is being extremely kind when it comes to describing Miller's lack of talent as a director. I'd have to agree, the man hasn't written anything good in a long time. In fact the things he's written over the last few years have been laughably bad, and that's not counting the frankly, reprehensible ideals, that underly his work.
  • Grantlol
I totally agree that Miller hasn't written anything worthwhile in a loooooong time. Perhaps they should do a movie based on Martha Washington, one of the last good things Miller wrote.
  • I would pay to see that.....as long as Miller wasn't directing. ;-)
  • greggorybasore
Actually I thought the Spirit was great fun. The trailer made it look all hard core noirish, but the film itself was schlocky hokey fun just like the old comics.

Rodriguez has got "Sam Raimi" syndrome. Every other film is a "make the studio happy" pic.
  • Good for him and Raimi too. In today's market that is the only way to get those films made. If there was no Spiderman, there probably would be a Drag Me to Hell, and I can guarantee you that the studios would not be making Machete or maybe even Sin City if Rodriguez wasn't such a money maker. Soderbergh does this too. Plus, I'd rather see a Oceans movie or a Spiderman directed by a thoughtful director like these guys rather than a McG or Michael Bay...which is who would be doing them if these guys weren't.
  • rodbrett
Oh, yeah. I'm not against it. I totally understand it's part of the business. Gives them the flexibility to do what they want. Also, I agree with you Raimi and Sodenberg make better mainstream movies than McG or Bay, although I DID like Terminator:Salvation(Minus the ending) but I know I'm a minority there. LOL

Jesus Christ, they're letting Miller direct another film?!?! Who in God's name would actually feel confident giving their money to this guy?!
  • Christopher_M
I hope they keep Miller from directing either project...the Spirit is enough to have him banned from directing ever again..I doubt he even deserved that co-directing credit on Sin City...sounded like Rodriguez gave Miller too much credit ...

keep Miller and Goyer away from the director's chair for any comicbook project
  • dagreenman18
Maybe if Rodriguez didn't waste his time on Shorts, we would be getting this sooner. Still, nice to hear it's still alive.
  • If Miller directs SIN CITY 2 alone, it'll be a piece of shit (most likely), and nothing worth paying ten dollars for.

And WHY is the script an original screenplay by miller, and not based on a mix of any of the original comics? It seems to me that this was a huge chunk of Sin City 1's coolness (the blending of awesome stories I had read years ago being Pulp Fiction'd together). Wtf is going on.

Anyway, I guess I shouldn't be to unnerved. Sin City 2 coming out is good no matter what. Unless Miller directs it by himself. Damn it, I cant rid my head of that negative bulletpoint..
  • pere
I'll believe it when I see it...
however if this does actually happen, I won't be nearly as excited, Miller directing alone? Not pretty.
  • after the spirit i just hope frank miller keeps with rodriguez and doesn't go at making sin city 2 alone.
  • greggorybasore
While it'd be much cooler if Rodriguez Co-Directs, I totally trust Miller on his own. The Spirit was good slap-sticky fun and anything else he does will get at least on viewing from me.
  • The film was slap-sticky fun, but it was also a mess and really highlighted what Rodriguez brought to Sin City...a hell of a lot.
  • Tetsuo_Man
The Spirit was never suppose to be anything like the dark and gritty Sin City, unfortunately, nobody could get past the whole "visual style of Sin City" = Not being Sin City. It's like everybody's head went ERROR.

If The Spirit had been explained, about why the slap stick was there and how it was paying homage to the original quirky and cheesy comic strip instead of adpating and making the character a general "badass" like Miller had done to Batman in Dark Knight Returns, then I think people would have enjoyed and at least understood why The Spirit was the way it was.
  • Electro_Jones
You will never see "Hard Boiled" directed by Miller, period. The movie will be far too expensive to allow that hack idiot to direct or even co-direct it. If that's a sticking point for Frank, he'll be buried with the rights to that film still in his pocket.
  • danno
"Hard Boiled" eh? Reality through the eyes of psychotic cyborg eh? Yeh, go on then.
  • I can't imagine Spy Kids 4 being profitable at this point. The Spy Kids themselves are too old and so are the kids in the audience who watched the movies. Now, Spy Kids Go to College n the other hand...would also suck.
  • I used to think Rpbert could be the only guy to direct Sin City 2. He owned the first one and was at the forefront of graphic novel adaptations with such a style... Now? Let anyone direct it. The moment has long gone.
