theron_and_hardy

One week ago, Brendon told you that there were rumors that Bronson’s Thomas Hardy might become the new Mad Max for director George Miller, and that his female co-star could be Charlize Theron. Now thanks to a trade blog we know that it is indeed the case. We also know a few — a very few — other things about the upcoming and long-awaited fourth Max Max movie. They’re after the jump.

THR reports that Hardy and Theron are in negotiations to join the George Miller-penned Fury Road (or Mad Max: Fury Road, that point is unclear and very likely subject to change to the latter, so that audiences know what they’re in for), but with things at this stage that represents a pretty good set of odds that it will come to pass.

Fury Road appears to be no reboot, and no animated film, despite rumors. Hardy would be Max Rockatansky, the same Max played by Mel Gibson in the original three films. This story takes place “a short while” after the events of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. THR says a shoot “next summer in Australia” is currently slated. Does that mean a northern hemisphere summer, or a southern? They’re kinda different. No matter, though — those details will follow in short order.

I’ll say it: I’m psyched about this. There is no reason to believe that what I enjoyed about the Mad Max films will be back in this installment. It’s been so long (25 years by the time this shoots!) and I wonder if Miller is still on point for this sort of effort. How can I not wonder? But goddamn, Tom Hardy was great in Bronson and RocknRolla and just about everything else he’s done. There’s plenty reason that Bronson should have worked as well as it did, but a large part of the film’s success is due to him. I would have loved to see Jeremy Renner in the driver’s seat for Fury Road, but I’m even more ready to see Hardy get the job.

I haven't seen any of the Max franchise, don't know if I'd like to. But I have so much faith in Tom Hardy, I have trouble choosing between him for Bronson or Michael Stuhlbarg for A Serious Man for what's the best performance of 2009.

Don't know if you'd like to? Road Warrior is still one of the best action films ever.

Watch the Road Warrior now. It makes you appreichate action movies and post apocalyptic movies. Honestly, Mad Max brought gimps, bondage, muscle cars and leather into high fashion.
  • Heheh! Damn true! - It was also one of the first real ventures into cyberpunk put on screen - and certainly (to the best of my knowledge) the first a mainstream western audience ever witnessed - a term now all to involved ith the likes of The Matrix (that film being the entire reason the term STEAMPUNK was coined).
  • just sayin
Maybe I'm reaching a bit, but Renner kinda looks like Toecutter.

Bout time Hardy got a big leading role.

awesome but it sucks it wont be an Aussie in the drivers seat playing max but still am interested it. at leats its not going Hollywood.

This is going to be the best action film of whatever year it comes out easily. But man this news is disappointing. I'm not really a big fan of Hardy. But Mad Max IS the ultimate badass. Worse than recasting Indiana Jones in my opinion. I hear rumors that the script includes a grown up Feral Child rescuing Mad Max who appears in the third act....One can dream this is the case. It would be badass seeing Mad Mel kick some ass with Hardy.

As an Australian, it's a shame not to see an Aussie in the role, but you can do worse that Tom Hardy, and they're not making Mad Max British, so it's no biggie.

Tome Hardy is one of the brightest character actors around and a future superstar. He'll be awesome in the Mad Max role no doubt, one of his many strengths is that he plays characters with duality very well, he can do the softly spoken stuff and then also go all out psycho. I still think his performance in 'Stuart a life backwards' is his best but 'Bronson' comes close.

Sounds good to me. He was good in Rock'nRolla and looks amazing in Bronson. He doesn't even look like the same person in Bronson. It's like what Deniro did in Raging Bull or what Christian Bale did in The Machinist. Definitely seems like the perfect choice for Mad Max. The only other person I could see in the role is either Sam Worthington or Eric Bana.

    I'm in.
  • It still sounds strange when Americans call the first MAD MAX 'Road Warrior'... anyway, I'm glad Fury Road is going ahead and shooting in Australia. I'm not very impressed with the non-Aussie casting-- you'd kind of hope Aussie actors would get a look-in for what should be an Aussie film.

Me too. There are plenty of people in Aus, why cant we cast from here? Apparently one of the leads in Tomorrow when the War Began went to a Brit aswell :(
  • My only real problem with the idea of this (as Hardy was indeed brilliant in Bronson) is the idea of trying to reignite a franchise so many years down the road without Mel Gibson being Max. I'm no real fan of him at all, but nobody else could become max without a remake - and that is generally bad territory.
Guess we'll have to see, eh?!
