jackman-oscars

Those of you anxiously awaiting for Hugh Jackman to commit to another Oscar ceremony should probably line up for Broadway tickets, because you won’t be seeing him on the Oscar stage this year. Sources say Jackman has declined the job over the past few weeks, and while he won’t rule out hosting future ceremonies, he didn’t want to do it two years in a row.

Jackman certainly breathed new life into a ceremony that was getting more stale by the year—he showed enthusiasm and showmanship not seen on the Oscar stage since Billy Crystal’s better years. It also helped that the Academy made efforts to liven up the ceremony as well (although to mixed response).

So now the question remains, who should host the 82nd Academy Awards?

First off, I think they should avoid tapping any of the other hosts from this decade, which includes Jon Stewart, Ellen DeGeneres, Whoopi Goldberg, Chris Rock, Steve Martin, and of course, Billy Crystal. They should continue on the mission they started with Jackman to find new blood. Personally, I loved Conan O’brien’s Emmy stint, and would be glad to see him take on the Oscars. If they wanted to move away from the comedian mold, I’ve always wondered how Tom Hanks would host the ceremony.

Then again, since the Academy is revisiting their past by allowing ten best picture nominees, perhaps they could revisit the trend of having multiple hosts this time around?

Discuss: What do you think? Who would be your ideal Oscars host? Do you have any other changes you’d like to see made for the Oscars this year?

  • Devindra, we are men of the same tastes. I would agree to see Conan or Tom host.

I disagree with multiple hosts, though. We saw how that worked for the Emmys in 2008.

  • I agree with you!!

    john stewart again!
  • tyler
    Ricky Gervais!
  • Good call! For some reason he didn't cross my mind, but I could see that working quite well.
  • Jordan Musheno
Gervais is actually hosting the Golden Globes
  • IsaacRosales
    Hell Fucking Yes!!!
  • I honestly think that if Gervais does a good job at the Golden Globes he could very well get it.

Otherwise I could see Fey get the job or NPH could swing a hat trick.
  • Giant-Size Man-Thing
    Roman Polanski.

Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Patton Oswalt. He is perhaps the funniest standup working today, has starred in an Academy Award winning film, and is a fucking huuuge movie buff. I know he could put together one hell of an opening spectacular, if given the chance. It would never happen, but he is my dream host.
  • On a purely geek level, Oswalt would indeed be great. We saw him interview Tim Burton at Comic-con this year, and he certainly knew his stuff.
  • He could be great but he simply isn't well known enough yet.
  • tyler
I don't know if he would ever do it, but Jim Carrey would be a fantastic host. The bits he does at the awards shows are always hilarious.
  • shadow
    This
  • Mike
Bill Murray I think would be great.
  • The Iron Avenger
Unless you can get him back from the grave. He died in Zombieland, remember?
  • spoilers thanks fuckhead

I would love to see Jon Stewart to come back. Possibly tap Stephen Colbert to host. Whomever they choose needs to be funny, classy, and not douchey. Steve Carell could be an interesting choice.

Think big, my friend. Jon Stewart AND Stephen Colbert. Tag-team style.
  • With some help from Conan and them trying to decide who found Duncan Jones first.

    Greatest fight ever.
  • Craig Ferguson.
  • I Agree! Ferguson would be a great host!
  • Bryan
Lars Von Trier. He is the best filmmaker in the world after all. God even said so.
  • Neil Patrick Harris. Obviously.

The only man who can compete with Hugh Jackman in song and dance.

I was gonna say NPH, it's the natural progression, tony's, emmy's, then oscars...
  • I cam into these comments to suggest this. Thank you for beating me to it.
  • Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
Adam, kiss your brain for me.
  • Poor choice of title.

    Sacha Baron Cohen
  • MC
Would love to have Gervais, but he's out as he is hosting the Globes. Any of these would be great:

    Conan O'Brien
    Stephen Colbert
Jason Alexander (could be a similar "theatrical" show as last year)
    Chevy Chase (he's back!)
    Tina Fey

So X-Men Origins: The Story of Logan the Wolverine was good enough to return for, but another stint of hosting the Oscars wasn't?
  • Palmer
Too obvious to say Neil Patrick Harris? Or...Don Rickles, he'd spend the whole time insulting everyone but at least it will be hilarious.
  • bournebond
Baron Cohen is a wise choice.
  • Did anyone else read the headline 'Hugh Jackman OUT' and think to themselves 'I knew it!'?
  • Yes.
  • Peter Capaldi as Malcolm Tucker would be a good, but perhaps not obvious, choice.
  • Mike Delfino
    Zbigniew Brzezinski would be great
  • Dr_Gonzo
    Kevin Smith.
  • Freakboy
Jonah Hill I think he would be great.
  • Nah, it should definitely be Michael Cera.
  • frank
NPH, for sure. He's a showman, and he can be funny, can sing, and can dance. He's a good actor, and he likes other dudes' junk. He's got it all for this job.
  • riverman
    Patrick Stewart.
He could talk about erotic cakes and the bra-stripping power of his mind.
