Relax: Hulu to Stick With Free Ad-Supported Content

hulu

Last week, Hulu lovers across the Internet had a collective heart attack when a high ranking News Corp. executive expressed skepticism over their current strategy of making content available for free with ads. He went on to say that Hulu will probably start charging for content in 2010. Many in the tech blogosphere have already dismissed the exec’s rantings, and now EW has the official word (via a Hulu insider) that the exec had no idea what he was talking about. Their source stressed that hulu is “steadfastly commited to free content”, and that premium offerings down the line will build upon what the site already offers.

I just hope that the exec, Deputy Chairmen Chase Carvey, was flogged for his original comments. To refresh, Carvey told reporters:

I think a free model is a very difficult way to capture the value of our content. I think what we need to do is deliver that content to consumers in a way where they will appreciate the value.

I’m not sure what’s worse; that he’s completely ignorant of the direction of online content, or that he can so readily spout lines about making users pay for previously free content as a “value”. To be fair, Hulu was an unlikely success, and I can somewhat understand how an aged executive might have trouble grasping how exactly Hulu has taken off (he should have read this Wired piece).

I’m just glad we have an official statement on this now, because even I was a bit worried that Hulu was going to pull the rug out from under us eventually. I would certainly pay for films or other content on Hulu in the future, but it’s simply PR suicide to take away previously free offerings.

Discuss: How would you like to see Hulu evolve in the future? Would you pay for exclusive content?

  • It'd be great if they brought it to Canada. The network's sites all suck so I just watch ad free streams instead. Get on it Hulu.

If you want access to the content, in Firefox:

    http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/967 then:

    1) In Firefox, Go to tools->modify headers

    2) From the drop down box on the left select add

    3) Then enter: "X-Forwarded-For" in the first input box without the quotation marks

    4) Enter: "12.13.14.15" in the second input box without the quotation marks

    5) Leave the last input box empty, and save the filter, and enable it

    6) Click the 'Configuration' tab on the right then proceed to check the 'always on' button.

Close the Modify Headers box and it should work.

"To be fair, Hulu was an unlikely success, and I can somewhat understand how an aged executive might have trouble grasping how exactly Hulu has taken off"

You just said it's an unlikely success... then criticized the guy for not knowing why it was a success... without explaining yourself why it was a success (and threw in some ageism as well).

And somehow reading a Wired article supposedly would have shown this executive the light - even though 90 percent of the things Wired breathlessly says are going to change the world are soon gone and forgotten.

Hindsight and Monday morning quarter backing are wonderful, no? And guess what, young spitfire, the executive is most probably correct that Hulu can't go on forever without actually making any money.

You did know they haven't actually made any money, right?
  • I'm not exactly sure what you mean there, the man is a high ranking executive for News Corp, you don't think he had the same information available to him *last week* that we all do? It's not as if he made these predictions when the site launched (when many tech sites showed little faith in it), so your hindsight comment makes no sense.

Also, last year Hulu took in a profit (and Youtube didn't): http://www.newsweek.com/id/185790

It's also winning the branding war for online video among the major network sites: http://blog.compete.com/2009/07/24/hulu-abc-nbc... Anyone who has actually tried the video solutions on network sites should realize Hulu has something they don't.

    Thanks for the schooling though.

I think you better have a damn good case as to why you are suddenly moderating my messages for posting something that points to problems with your article.
  • ScanCase
someone has a case of the mondays.
  • Seriously, relax. I don't control comment moderation, and I can't approve them. If you're trying to post a link, then it will get placed in moderation automatically (as we've detailed above).
  • quintushalls
I'm glad I read the comments. It is great when you can actually compare financial numbers. Thanks! :)

This actually had me worried as well since hulu is my only access to tv shows. But now that things are cleared up I'm happy.
  • Huzzah!

Im not sure what content i WOULD pay for. thats the problem. If i wanted to watch a show from a premium network like HBO or Showtime, i just wait for the DVD to come out and rent it on Netflix. I can't think of anything i would actually pay Hulu for.
  • How would I like to see Hulu evolve? I'd like to be able to access it for a start. I understand the predicament, with international release rights and whatnot-- but damn I wish Hulu worked overseas.

Just heard a great place :___Bigtalls CO M___ , we can find any types friends you want to meet, please have a try...

If Hulu starts charging then it's back to torrenting for me.
  • mbellerbrock
I'm already torrenting because they blocked every program that can stream Hulu to my Xbox 360 so I don't have to sit in front of my pc all day. I don't see what the big deal is, I'm still watching the ads.
  • ayric
PlayOn by MediaMall. Best 40 bucks I've spent and makes the 360 a real media player. So nice ditching cable tv.
  • mbellerbrock
Yeah, I've considered that, I guess it is cheaper than a cable bill, I just wish it was free and/or provided by Hulu. And how long will it be before they block PlayOn?
  • Haymaker
If Hulu started to charge I would just say fuck'em, and go back to just not watching there content online. I would go back to being mindful to DVR programs I like instead. No skin off my back really. I already pay for cable and netflix which is more then enough for me.
  • quintushalls
Just curious, in not wanting to pay for online content, what is the difference in cost between cable each month and premium hulu + netflix?
  • Haymaker
Cable offers +200 channels that I can watch from my couch on my 40in HDTV, hulu is currently trying to keep it to computer screens on purpose (taking away viewing through the PS3). Plus hulu doesn't even have all the networks yet (for CBS or AMC shows they still direct you too the company website to watch) and what about live sports broadcasts?... Trust me I would love to get ride of cable, but its just not there yet.
  • quintushalls
The content should remain free and ad supported. But I would be willing to pay for premium content if they open up access to their entire library, add films/tv at the time of release, no commercials, and gave bonus features. I think that might be asking more than they will offer, but dammit, that is what I think is fair.
  • wildey
I'd be willing to pay a subscription fee if they would stream every episode from every season from every show ever broadcast on every network and make them available for all of eternity. Now, THAT I would pay for.
  • John Doe
I have a comment, this article is refering to if someone would pay for hulu content.i used to pay per month for watching all sorts of movies tv shows etc and the company was awesome until they sold there company to ..the comapny was vongo..but the point is it was worth $ 9.99 per month for unlimited movies, and i mean newest and recent movies, but now that comapny who took it over will only offer it to verizon customers,is that crappy .yeah it is,so they lost my business,in answer to the question,no i would not pay for hulu, hulu has older movies and them dang commercials are very annoying plus its choppy through the movie.I will stick with renting dvds..
  • Everybody needs to relax about this. A lot of it was just knee-jerk bloggers putting words into the guy's mouth: he didn't say that previously-free content would stop being free. He didn't say anything, really. He just mentioned how he hoped that in some way, people would pay for content on Hulu at some point in the future.

Would this be a bad thing? No. Let's stop with the crazed entitlement. It just sounds downright stupid to bitch about how TV should be free online when you're paying $60+ a month to your cable provider.

If Hulu keeps expanding their catalog, and eventually made it all available to users who pay a subscription fee, I think that would be worth it.

Everybody said the iTunes Store wouldn't work either, that they would just keep torrenting and pirating...and guess what, it did work, because iTunes was a good product that delivered what it promised and had a huge library. Hulu has a similar opportunity.

John August has a good post on this...it's the top story on johnaugust dot com right now.
  • I'm a big Hulu fan but I think they have a ways to go before the few ads they show pay for everything with a little left over.

I communicate with Hulu regularly and I hope they work on the ad marketplace, or on getting more advertisers, or on the matching algorithm. It is surprising how many times I've seen Ortho-tricyclen-lo ads or video game ads when I'm not in the least interested.
  • peter
The fact that it was ever brought up means it's been talked about, which means it'll only take time before slowly content starts going 'premium' etc.
oh well, I'm in Canada so doesn't make much difference to me either way.
  • sanyo
Nope. I use Hulu when I miss an episode of something because most network's video players are pure crap. Also I like the "dim the lights feature". But that's about it.
  • i really dont care for hulu, i guess its an ok site. But I go to other sites that have pretty much the same quality videos and have a lot more content that doesn't get removed like hulu does with its videos. Is hulu all people really know for tv shows? Or do they like to be on the safe side
  • Like many have said, I'd love to see Hulu go international, and as for payed content building on top what's not there.

How about no commercials (as some sponsors do for some shows), maybe access to more shows, and newer movies available as well. I know most people just use Hulu for TV, changing that would be cool.

Hulu-exclusive content, like some behind the scenes things, or interviews, would be really great too, more so than just the internet-exclusive interviews and blurbs from actors...
