Adam Sandler is Jack AND Jill

adam-sandler-funny-people

Oh Adam Sandler, has it really come to this? You’ve now sunk to cross-dressing for a paycheck? We’ve learned tonight that Sandler will star in the romantic comedy Jack and Jill, and he’ll be playing both the titular Jack and his twin sister Jill. I’m assuming the romance isn’t between the siblings—although that would probably make things a bit more interesting. Screenwriting duties come courtesy of Steven Koren (Evan Almighty, Click), which gives us an idea of where this film will land among Sandler’s other films.

After loving his performance in this year’s Funny People, it’s sort of sad to see Sandler so quickly fall into his typical routine—especially after that Apatow film did such a great job of lampooning Sandler’s career. One could easily see this project as one of the embarrassing films in Funny People starring a comedian who’s more than a little burnt out.

But perhaps I’m being too harsh. Without any other news to go on regarding this project, all I can really focus on is the fact that Adam Sandler will be playing his own twin sister. It could end up being a rare gem like The Wedding Singer—or even something not as good, but still enjoyable, like 50 First Dates. Quite honestly though, I haven’t been a fan of any film written by Koren, and his name speaks volumes to me when hearing about any upcoming projects.

And let me be clear, it’s not as if I’m opposed to Adam Sandler’s wacky films. Like many, I loved his ’90s stuff, including Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore. But while those movies were a bit stupid, but mostly fun, I’m finding more and more that his recent wacky comedies have weighed more on the stupid side of things.

I’ll hope for the best with this project, but I’d like to see Sandler join up in another Apatow film, or team up with a new group of comedic talent. I wouldn’t even mind more dramas from the guy. I’d just like to hear of more projects from him that don’t make me instantly roll my eyes.

  • not that cross dressing for a role necessarily means you've sunk.
  • No, but knowing the screenwriter this is going to be more of a Martin Lawrence-type deal than anything else. Maybe they won't manage to use the cross-dressing as a means for cheap laughs, but I wouldn't bet on it.
  • Oh yea, no doubt this is going the miss doubtfire, big mamas house, nutty professor route. The side where it's cross dressing for the sake of cheap laughs.

nothing wrong with white actors doing crossdressing on film cause most white actors only does it once and dont do it again anytime soon i.e. Dustin Hoffman as Tootsie, Robin Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire, Patrick Swayze in To Wong Foo as Vida Boheme. these white actors only does it once and never return to do a sequel or any other type of crossdressing movie.

with black actors the film studios love having black actors wearing a dress all the time and they want them to keep on doing the same type of character over and over again all the time. Tyler Perry career is just only to be Madea all his life, Martin Lawrence for been Big Momma now im hearing they want to do Big Momma's House 3, Eddie Murphy The Nutty Professor and Norbit (Rasputia).

Dave Chappelle even mention about black actors wearing a dress on film heres the link below

Devindra, i appreciate that you are trying to put a positive spin on the news, but you know as well as we do that there is a razor thin chance of this movie being anything but garbage. I like to think of this as the shit film people do for the studio after or before starting a personal project. I look forward to his next legit film, because he was very good in Funny People.
  • Oh Lord I can already see the wacky trailer that will sell to all the chumps who will go in droves because Sandler is 'the funniest...'

Maybe 10 years ago. You sound a little out of touch.
  • ...and yet Sandler movies keep turning a profit. Now THAT'S funny.

I can't remember the last time I've heard anyone excited for a Sandler movie, even the idiots seem to have grown wise at least 5 years ago.

Why is it that comedic writers feel the need to use a romantic entanglement as the main conflict of their movies. Why does he have to dress like a woman for the sole purpose of getting into some other woman's pants. Couldn't he just cross-dress for cross-dressing's own sake?

Sandler sunk to cross dressing for a pay check?

Do "The Gap Girls" ring a bell? Maybe a couple of stints as "The Lunch Lady."
Look I am not saying Sandler's movies haven't blown as of late. Maybe he's lost touch with what's funny, but him cross dressing for a paycheck is not new.

I think that it would be interesting for me to note that while I was reading this article, Saving Me by Nickleback was playing in the background. Hows that for irony?

sounds to me like your not a real BIG fan of adam sandler at all. you probably arent the one who should have wrote this article seeing as how your a little biased. as for me, ill just wait till the trailer comes to judge for myself as seeing how this article isnt fair and makes it sounds like yet again another "bad movie".
