Netflix Comes to PlayStation 3 in November

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 will not be the only gaming platform with the ability to stream movies from Netflix platform for long. After a long period of speculation, the streaming Netflix option will be coming to Sony’s PlayStation3 in November.

The press release says only ‘next month’, so we don’t yet know the official launch date for the service. When it does go live, Netflix subscribers who have at least the $8.99 per month plan will be able to stream movies to the PS3.

Microsoft was touting Netflix exclusivity as recently as August of this year, but Netflix must see the business advantage of expanding to other consoles. Just last week the company reported that their subscriber base had expanded to 11.1 million users, with many recent users gathered thanks to the streaming Watch Instantly service accessed via computers and the 360. With nine million PS3s out there, a significant number of additional users may subscribe to Netflix starting next month when the system rolls out. (Netflix says it expects up to 12.3m users by the end of the year.)

Initial implementation of the Netflix service won’t be quite ideal: you’ll have to get a free Blu-ray disc mailed from Netflix, then use that in the console to access the service. That’s said to be a short-term solution, pending a PS3 software update that will integrate Netflix. But that update won’t happen until next year. Sony just released PS3 system software 3.0 in September.

When the service launches next month, users will be able to browse the Netflix catalogue and add streaming titles to their queue directly from the PS3. Xbox 360 users only got that option late this summer, after a year of being able to browse only their instant queue on the 360.

Wonder if this is gonna be for Canadians as well?
  • CanadaGetsTheShaft
I wish they would bring Netflix to Canada like they planned back in 03 or 05... I assume the shipping is too expensive or some other bullshit excuse?
  • I am so happy about this! I just cancelled my XBOX Live account because I was planning get the Roku box (since MS kept saying that Netflix was going to stay exclusive to them). My Live subscription ends Nov. 30. I'll be able to watch Netflix on my PS3 by then! I just saved $90. Good job Sony, good job.

kind of off topic, but whats your rationale for owning both an xbox 360 and playstation 3?
  • I seem to be grabbing at one in the dark myself.
I've been thinking about selling my Xbox recently,
since I'm pretty sure the PS3 Slim for 299 is an exceptional deal.
One of the few things holding me back from putting an ad up on Ebay has been the Netflix ability on the 360 - I just use it so fucking much.
    Also, of course, Xbox Live.

But fuck it. Selling my 360. Any takers? Premium, 1 year old, Wireless controller, all cables, Gears of War 2, Orange box, Resident Evil 5 : All together = $214.99
  • I bought 360 in 2006 and then my friend offered to pay for half a PS3 earlier this year when he won a few thousand dollars at a casino. However, I never use my 360 anymore, so I'm considering selling it.
  • Well, how about wanting to play exclusive titles? I'm sure there are plenty or people who would want to play both gears of war and uncharted, or mass effect and heavy rain, or halo and killzone, or, or, or...

and then im gona go a head and say those people are ridiculous.
  • Because we have money and we want to play every game released :D
  • Streaming Netflix on XBOX as I type this. I prefer to leave my XBOX to gaming and PS3 to movie/bluray watching. Most likely gonna stream the movies on the PS3 once it goes into effect.

If I can stream movies on Blu-ray then this might be a good reason to take my PS3 out of my closet and dust it off.

What kind of quality can we expect to see from this?

Initial implementation won't be ideal, however I think it'll be pretty cool. According to Gizmodo, "you'll be able to pick out movies or throw stuff into your queue using an onscreen interface, so there's no going back to the old-school days where you had to add stuff to your queue on your computer before strolling over to your Xbox and TV"

Nevertheless, this is great news for PS3 owners. Price drop, Uncharted 2, and now this. Sweet.
  • so let me get this straight. The hack around in order to get Netflix streaming is that they plan on using the BD-Live features that would allow for streaming? Or is this thing just an app that has the ability to access the catalog of Silverlight powered Media streams? I mean why do they have to send me a BluRay disk if it does that why not just make an app you can download from the PSN Store.

Still love the fact they are doing it but just a weird way to get around doing it.
  • It'll probably be the same app as the ones in Netflix-compatible BR players.

Just a quick note: You won't be able to browse the ENTIRE instant watch catalog. I think each listed genre has maybe 100 movies to choose from in the 360 interface. So, I added Bullshit Season 6 right from my 360, but I had to go onto my computer to add Seasons 4 and 5.
  • awesome, i just switched from 360 to PS3 and am now getting my instant watch back
