overnight-duffy

With The Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day on the verge of hitting theaters (it opens this Friday), one of things that’s continued to fascinate me is the story of how Troy Duffy was able to remake himself in the aftermath of The Boondock Saints and Overnight, the 2003 documentary that chronicled Duffy’s rise and fall. Duffy was just a bartender when, in 1997, Harvey Weinstein agreed to purchase his Boondock Saints script for $300,000 and let him direct the movie with a budget of $15 million. However, as portrayed in the film, Duffy is an egomaniacal lout, obsessed with the heights of his talent and abusive to his friends. He goes on to lose his deal, his friends, and his Hollywood connections, although the massive success of The Boondock Saints on DVD has brought him to the point where a sequel, complete with theatrical release, is now possible.  Here’s the trailer for the documentary:

I spoke with Duffy last week while he was out promoting Boondock Saints 2 and asked him about his reactions to Overnight, some of which you can read after the jump. My full interview with him will be available later this week.

When asked what his reaction to the film was, Duffy responded:

Bored shitless. I mean, I was there! I know what happened!

I followed up by asking him whether or not he felt the film’s portrayal of events was fair. Unsurprisingly, Duffy said the following:

Absolutely not. I don’t have to feel, I know, I was there, it was me it was happening to. That type of behavior that you saw in that film was the exception and not the rule. And I don’t think it was too fair of them to not provide any context of why is Troy upset, who’s he even talking to, what’s the situation. It was basically “Show me acting like an asshole.” After three years of shooting that would be a fairly easy thing to do. And through especially three of the most tumultuous years of my life.

Duffy was sanguine about his abilities and accomplishments, which remain impressive despite his history:

[E]ven as clever as the little devils were who made that thing, they couldn’t hide the fact that I was a newbie in a business, I got a movie deal and a record deal. I lost them both. I was able to resurrect them both with new companies and ultimately make my film, and the band make its album, all our way, right out of the gate, knowing nobody. From watching that film, you have no idea how I accomplished that. To suggest that that type of behavior got all these people to invest millions of dollars in my unproven talent…to me it stretches [credibility] quite a bit. If you think I was able to accomplish all that by acting like that, feel free to give it a whirl yourself. See where it gets you.

For their part, the makers of Overnight have already responded to Duffy’s allegations and denied any bias in their filmmaking. Director Tony Montana explained:

We worked for eight years straight to craft a project about Hollywood, one that would shed light on what happened in the very best- and worst-case scenarios, about a young man given the opportunity of a lifetime. The proverbial keys to the kingdom were handed to Troy. The narrative of ‘Overnight’ changed as the protagonist and the events changed. We simply followed the organic themes.

Overnight’s producer was slightly more forceful in his response, saying:

It’s hard for me to imagine, after Troy’s track record, that anyone would take him at his word unless there was some financial end in mind. I have to admit it is impressive that he got the sequel off the ground after making enemies of the likes of the William Morris Agency, Harvey Weinstein and nearly everyone else in the industry. It’s amazing what one can accomplish when they sell their soul.

In my interview with him, Duffy was equally derogatory about Overnight’s filmmakers, saying:

I could go point-for-point on the whole film. But the fact of the matter is, what I accomplished was a tall order, especially for somebody with no relationships in this business. From watching that movie, you have no fucking idea how I did it. Period. They did not tell you my story. That wasn’t a documentary about me. That was a smear job executed by two opportunists who decided to screw everybody who ever helped them.

I think if I went from being a poor-as-shit bartender/bouncer to being a famous Hollywood director, only to have everyone fuck me over and my movie not even get a theatrical release, I would be pretty pissed.

Also, why isn't All Saints Day getting a wide release?
  • not necessarily. I saw the documentary a little over 3 years ago, so my memory might not serve me right.. but as I recall, he pretty much treated everyone like total shite, he wasted money on stupid stuff, and he made ridiculous demands that the studio couldn't meet.

If anyone else had seen the documentary, correct me if I'm wrong.
  • stuntmanjames1
nope, you are correct. He is an ass bag
  • Electro_Jones
Yeah, his behavior in that movie is inexcusable. He's a shit filmmaker too, in my opinion.
  • stuntmanjames1
because honestly, even the distrubition company knows this movie will be like the first...crap
  • Erniet
Really, the first movie was terrible. I think the only people that liked it are Americans who think they're Irish and people from Boston who like to tell everyone they're from Boston.
  • every aspiring filmmaker needs to watch OVERNIGHT and make sure that shit never happens to them...
  • Tom
Well, make sure they don't contribute to unraveling their own careers, you mean.
  • GeneralError
Everything about this is annoying, but what I don't understand is all the hype and false interest this article insinuates. This Doc creates a false aura as if he's a rockstar, but all he did was make an indy film -happens every day.
  • The outrageous deal that Duffy got with Miramax helped him make the front page of USA Today (see the photo at the top of the post). It was also symbolic of the excesses and kingmaker status of Miramax and the Weinstein's during their heyday.

    That does not happen everyday.
  • Some people like to simplify way too much. I'll applaud Duffy as a guy who made the most out of a bad situation, albeit of his own accord possibly, but I won't take away his success. He definitely made a cult flic whether some out there want to admit they own it.
  • Name
Boondocks Saints is terrible so whatever dude.
  • Andy III
I'm with Name here. I checked it out based on raves on several podcasts, but couldn't get completely through it. It was spiraling into a nonsensical mess. Kind of over the stylistic crime genre anyway...I couldn't finish Rocknrolla for the same reasons.

Although Willem Dafoe was awesome as usual.
  • Peter
The sequel will probably suck because a) it's unnecessary and b) the first one sucked so it's got no foundation. It's like building a house in a pile of shit.
  • MattEss
First off "kingmaker status"? Are you seriously okay writing a statement as overblown as that one? All I gotta say on that front.

Secondly, I don't see the appeal of "Boondock Saints" in any way shape or form. It is not a good film. Duffy got a pretty great deal to make a pretty terrible movie, this happens almost everyday in this machine called Hollywood and that is a fact that should not be celebrated.

Rather than saying "oh look, this guy got a great deal and completely fumbled it", isn't it more appealing to celebrate a person who got a shitty deal and still made something substantial out of it? Like a decent film.
  • "Rather than saying "oh look, this guy got a great deal and completely fumbled it", isn't it more appealing to celebrate a person who got a shitty deal and still made something substantial out of it? Like a decent film."

See, we probably all WOULD be saying that, if it weren't for the fact that he DIDN'T get a shitty deal, he got the deal of a lifetime and fucked it up himself by being a total asshole. He put himself in the bad situation, so no, he deserves no celebration.

Boondock Saints really is a love/hate movie. And sure, I bet more readers on this site hate it than love it, but that's because most of the readers here are pretentious film geeks. Which is fine- I am too- but I still can love this movie. It's just a fun, entertaining movie with a lot of guns. Not everything has to have some stupid, half thought out philosophical argument behind it. If that were true, what would Michael Bay be here for?

I'm sure this will spark some quasi-witty remark out of someone. But Boondock Saints is immensely popular, so argue all you want, it's not going away.
  • Nokoo
When watching a movie I'd still prefer quality over popularity any day of the week.
  • quintushalls
I would recommend following this chart: http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/so_bad_its_worse.png
  • Name
Boondock being so popular means that OTHER people obviously think it's good. Just because YOU don't doesn't mean it still isn't good to a large population.
  • Regicide
Some things are subjective like that, some things aren't. It doesn't take much intelligence to see that Boondock Saints is a terrible movie with horrible dialogue, god-awful cliches, piss-poor direction and worthless acting. Anyone who thinks it's good is a simpleton enamored with violence. It. Is. Not. A. Good. Movie.
  • stuntmanjames1
um, pretentious film nerds. I am a filmmaker and I don't like this movie because it was horribly written and not made very well. If it had a decent story and they could capture that, then all is well, but in reality, it really wasn't that good.
  • You do realize that you still stated that you're so much a pretentious film nerd that you actually joined the business that you enjoy being pretentious about. It's not a bad thing.
  • Theres's no doubt that the makers of the doc where out to make Troy Duffy look like an ass. But what's on film is what's on film he can't deny at points even without the slant he was being a dick. Then again the fact that he got almost all of the original cast and crew to return to make a squeal shows that he couldn't be all bad.
  • Bugaboo
How did he "remake" himself? He was able to finally fund a sequel? Huh?
  • Troy Duffy is an ass anyway you slice it.
The Boonedock Saints was a great flick but he is still a fool.
I have seen Overnight and I found it was well made.
  • stuntmanjames1
Let's be totally honest. The Wiensteins tend not to throw money at a project if they feel that it will not make money, because it is about money. That explains them pulling out of the project. Also, he should of surrounded himself with people that knew the business. Studios do not fund movies themselves. It is a series of loans and investors. Also, the Troy Duffy you see is the real Troy Duffy. He kept yes men and people that fed that out of control and overweight ego of his. He victimized himself and honestly, if you are going to treat friends and family that way, you are bound to ruin hisa career.
  • While I could agree with you, I highly doubt you only watch quality films.
    This is directed at Nokoo.
  • Nokoo
That goes without saying. I just prefer them.
  • Wow im surprised at all the hate toward "Saints". I thought it was a really enjoyable romp to be honest. It made me laugh and wince so in my mind it did a good job. To each his own.

The truly funny thing about this is that this is the norm not the exception in Hollywood. More assholes live in that industry then good guys plain and simple so dont be all shocked and surprised by this "revelation" about this guy turning into a cock muncher when someone throws millions his way.
  • I don't pretend to know the whole story, but that trailer does seem to make Troy Duffy look a bit like an arrogant asshole.

It's true that documentary-makers always edit their films to portray the story they want to tell and they decided to tell a rise and fall story.

Whether or not there is any truth to what's portrayed in the documentary, I don't think Duffy should take it too personally, especially since he's back on his feet somewhat.
  • Totally agree there. Yeah, it could be a rendition of the truth or just a smear campaign. Either way, his movie is making release this time and he might actually get something out of it.
  • Rob0729
When you can out asshole Harvey Weinstein, you know you are a ranging asshole of epic proportions.
  • Benny Turd
Boondock Saints is an awful film....

The only moment of greatness is Willem Dafoe rolling around on the floor dressed as a woman showing his tights.
  • I was going to finally watch Boondock Saints on Netflix, but I'll pass on it and the sequel after watching the lunkhead in the above trailer. (I'll pass on the doc, too; it's a horrible trailer about a nasty dude.)

Unless, of course, he managed to get Julie Benz out of her clothes for the sequel, in which case, it's a rental.
  • DeanMoriarty
I dont see what the quality of Boondock Saints (or the sequel) has anything to do with the fact that there is a interesting story behind the movie. Even if Overnight was extremely prejudiced (and I dont say it is, but you cant know the whole story, naturally), there is no doubt that there were some pretty extreme things going on. A dynamic of egocentrism and greed in an extremely hostile environment, almost painful to watch (but not because of the technical aspects of the doc).
If you feel there is too much hype, and that everything around the movie and the people affiliated gets more attention than they deserve, there is a simple way to deal with it: dont react to it! dont write a post, dont see the movie, dont talk excessively about it (although i can see that people sometimes need to vent). Do exactly the thing people on youtube comments are too stupid for!
  • Nick1
At a screening of Antichrist in Chicago someone asked Willem Dafoe about Boondock Saints II and he eventually got around to saying he thought the documentary was unfair, aswell. He said they were friends of Duffy and they interviewed everyone for hours and hours and then cut a few bits together that made him look like an ass. Dafoe said he had no interest in the sequel but he enjoyed working on the first one and thought the documentary was an innacurate portrayal of Duffy.
  • quintushalls
aww, I liked that movie! I'm just a big fan of Dafoe. Now I learn that the second one will suck and the creator was a total douche. Well, without any outside influences, I could fairly say I enjoyed it. After learning about the creator and the film's crowd, I could safely say that it would have influenced me to have a very negative connotation on the film.
  • The truth is, you can make someone look a hundred different ways in a documentary, depending on your clip selections. I remember seeing a doc about 10 years ago about a little known director-- I can' remember his name, except that he's made a number of small budget dramas and comedies, using his friends and ex-wives. One scene from the doc I remember (and really liked) was when he was driving around while he was being filmed. He said in effect, I always thought my life would be this way-- that people would be interested enough in me as an artist to want to document my life. He came across as absolutely charming and modest. A few years later, someone did another doc on him, covering the same period, and he came across as a real asshole-- an absolute jerk. So which doc was true? The first? The second? Both? Neither? The thing is, people prefer a train wreck to a train running on time.
  • Seriously - as long as you say people can edit documentaries differantly you probably didn't watch it. I was also thinking the same way before I saw it but after I was quite sure that he is an ass.
It's not only that he behaves like he is the king of hollywood (he keeps saying the weinsteins are afraid of him and acts like he is really the more important person than them...) also the part when his brother tells him what he thinks about his behaviour and he basicaly tells him to fuck off. Even if they were only looking for the worst parts how many people really behave like that ever? Also I think the 1st part of the doc was less biased.
  • Guest
"That was a smear job executed by two opportunists who decided to screw everybody who ever helped them."

Duffy is definitely is an expert on that.
  • mbellerbrock
I'm sure I was biased watching it because I actually really like The Boondock Saints but when I watched Overnight I saw an angry Duffy that was angry for good reason, he got screwed by everyone around him. He demanded respect from his friends because he was the one who made it all happen for them, I don't see anything entirely wrong with that.

Like I said, I'm probably a bit biased, but how many haters went in with the hope of seeing what they wanted?
  • Kday
I had seen Boondock Saints long before Overnight and thought Saints was decent for a cheap, poorly paced and shot, cliche loaded, childishly violent vengeance fantasy. There wasn't anything about it to make it "cult" worthy, but that's just another opinion.

What's inarguable is that Duffy shot himself in both feet with his unfounded arrogance and stupidity. Overnight should have been called, "What NOT to do when you get to Hollywood." The guy might be creative (albeit not very talented), but he proved to be a shite businessman with no manners or even a hint as to how The Game is played. He declared himself the winner of the dance contest before even stepping on the floor.

"They're afraid of me." "They should be afraid of me." That was his moron-mantra. You can't edit words like that into someone's mouth. He didn't 'demand respect' from his friends, he expected obedience and enforced it by chanting "you'd be nothing without me," even though the guys in the band just stuck around at the promise of maybe one day getting paid.

Nobody screwed him, he was handed a gold chalice and took a dump in it. How he managed to make a sequel is remarkable.
  • mbellerbrock
Well if you listen to the interview David had with him Duffy mentions that he's since learned how the business game works. And really Hollywood couldn't ignore him, worldwide the DVD made arond $100 million.
  • scoville
Overnight is available on Netflix's Watch Instantly service. I hated Boondock Saints, so I think I might enjoy Overnight. I'm about to watch it in a couple minutes.
  • scoville
Yeah, this no talent ass clown deserved to get dumped by everyone he treated like crap.
  • blober08
first of all if any of you know anything about movies you would know that the way duffy directed this movie was AMAZING.. for example in the boondock saints when there at the bar there about to fight the russian guys and bam all u see is the next sceene were there dead and at the investigation, then after they investigate, bamm they go back to see what happend at the bar, i mean come on its a different way to dirrect a movie but i personally think that this is one of the best movies i have ever watched. it had humor and action what more do you want.. and the movie cant be shit if there are so many fans out there u guys just dont kno what your talkin about so u can come suck on these chineese balls motha fuckkkkaaaaaaaaa
  • if i only had one story to hang onto for the rest of my life, i'd be an asshole too.
  • orwellsghost
Notice how the producers of Overnight cite 2 examples of burnt bridges by Duffy... the Morris Agency and Weinstein.

Well Weinstein is a given, and I bet I would not have to look to hard to find a link between the Morris Agency and W.

Give me a break with that sold his soul garbage.
If that were the case he would have done everything Weinsteins way.
And if he were ush an asshole his entire crew would not have returned for the sequel.

Its obvious whats going on here, Weinstein has a lot of people that suck his balls. And I bet Tony Montana saw an oppotunity to suck on Weinsteins balls and jumped at the chance.
  • troyous
Now that the movie is out, I bet half of the haters on here went out and saw it. Thats what they do. OK, I have been to school for the buis. I have had great successes and failures. My successes were discredited and I went from the top to the bottom. The institution would like for me to believe that I did not have the skills and know how in the first place.
The point is, if you don't play the game for the players, and you play it for yourself, you lose. I feel for Troy Duffy, not only by saying stupid shit and people re-arranging it. But for trusting the powers in film without the right people in his corner.
I would like to see the real story, oh, that would leave the Doc guys like me. Working at a gas station.
