Saturday saw not one but two separate special events with Mitchell Hurwitz take place in Austin, Texas and luckily I had remote ears attending both. The first was a panel discussion called “The Art of Storytelling,” also featuring Ron Howard and Steve Zaillian, and the second was the clearly-titled “Conversation With Mitchell Hurwitz.” Both saw some talk of the upcoming Arrested Development film.

Hurwitz explained the origins of the TV show’s style like this: Ron Howard approached him and asked for something in a verite style, but they soon curbed their enthusiasm for explicitly mockumentary language to avoid comparison with the BBC’s version of The Office, which was just taking off as Devlopment was in development.

For the film, Hurwitz is apparently tempted to change the style completely, but Howard wants it to remain the same. Even if that does end up being the case, Hurwitz did promise that the film would be more “polished”.

The major justification given for the camera and editing styles was that watching comedy isn’t about camera angles and fancy shots. That rationale doesn’t add up with me… why wouldn’t they use a more ‘invisible’ style, then? It’s impossible for me to forget the presence of the camera when watching Arrested Development.

Hurwitz said he is finding the writing of the film easier than with a 22 minute episode because he has a natural inclination and skill to delve deep into detail.

Over at the other event, Hurwitz confirmed that he would not only be writing but will also be directing the feature film himself. The only major plot information he could be pushed for was that the film would be set, to a large extent, in prison. Now, that confuses me a little (and bear in mind that I’m not a hardcore Arrested Development fan by any means) but I thought all of the prison plotlines were tied up at the end of the second season?

Please, just stop getting my hopes up.

They could still continue the prison storyline, possibly with Lucille being locked away as per finale. Alot could of happened between the finale (which was quite open) till now.

They I dont want to get my hopes up too high =\

In my opinion, the beauty of Arrested Development was that it could take a completely absurd plot line and somehow make you think that it is logical. I have faith that anywhere the story goes will be hilarious and interesting, though I think the prison thing has been somewhat overplayed.
  • Tetsuo_Man
Same... I always sorta rushed through the prison scenes in my mind, the only funny ones being the very beginning "No touching!" and Tobias' stay in the prison (Dorthy for the lolz!).

I'm trusting though... and let us not forget that Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay only had the prison scene consist of a few scenes and then they escaped, all this consisting of a few minutes within the overall movie before it got back to the buddy roadtrip adventures that we all know and love. Same will probably happen with Arrested Development. My one wish though... DITCH CHARLIZE THERON. I squarely blame her for the show getting canceled, the first arc of the third season sucked so much and even though her character left and the show moved on to funnier things, it still got canceled.... Please, don't bring her back. PLEASE.

    SPOILER:

Well obviously you're not a big AR fan, because if you were, you'd know that the season ended with Michael and his son and his father skipping the country with company money at the end of the THIRD season.
  • CONTINUED SPOILERS:
Plus Lucile is assumedly in jail for the same reasons George Sr. was in the first place.
  • thrillhouse
But...they can't arrest a husband and wife for the same crime!!!
  • I have the worst f**king attorneys.
  • I never even thought a style change would be considered. An interesting side note there.

Also I kind of assumed Howard would direct but now that I think about it, that would make little sense.

Idiot, it had 3 seasons. Also, at the end, the MOTHER was arrested and will probably go to jail, so it seems as if the movie will revolve around her

dont post shit if you dont know about it

Damn dude, calm down. That's a little harsh. He admitted he wasn't the biggest fan. You act like he just claimed Jesus never died.
  • sanyo
But Arrested Development is the Jesus of TV Comedy.
  • roachford
If that's true, I ain't waitin' 2000 plus years for a sequel, pal!
  • Swarley
    Touche.
Then the real question is: if AD is Jesus, then what's God?
  • BrendonConnelly
I knew it had three seasons. There's nothing in my comment that says there were less than that. So who is an idiot, sorry?

And, if I had not posted this... then who would? Really. Think about it.

    Just a quick sec here...

First of all, the panel was with Mitchell Hurowitz and Paul Feig, not with Ron Howard (although Howard WAS at the fest).

And Mitchell said in both panels pretty explicitly that he had no idea what the plot of the movie was gonna be. The prison mention was one of many asides that he followed up with a disclaimer that he was just riffing. I think he made it pretty clear he had no idea what the plot was at this point.
  • BrendonConnelly
Read it again. Two different events - one chaired by Feig, the other a panel with Hurwitz AND Howard in attendance.
  • ptek
You are correct sir. And I only saw the one with Feig. Still, given Hurowitz's general attitude during the panels, I would say it's safe to assume any plot details given out are subject to enormous change.
  • Mike
I love how non-newsworthy this is. I was pretty sure that most of this had been confirmed already (or at least stated by Hurwitz), such as Hurwitz directing. Also, I don't see how he can be "writing" if he has no idea what the plot is. This scares me a bit, especially the direction change. But I suppose time will tell... and at this point I'm guessing that will be a long time, unfortunately.
  • BrendonConnelly
The "I don't know what the plot is" stuff is pretty much par for the course at these events, even when the script is nearing completion (and in some cases done).
  • The Great Cambino
Set in prison, huh? Sounds like someone might be meeting with an analrapist.
  • Name
I think someone's gonna be meeting Dorthy.

Somewhere over the rainbow, there's another rainbow...
  • sanyo
Did you not watch Season 3 and its finale? *hint: it mirrors the major points of the first episode of Season 1.*
  • waqman
Oh shit. If this gets to theatres I'm straight up going to the cinema in mah never-nudes.
