stallone_the_artist

[UPDATE: CHUD readers have debunked this story. Apparently, there's been some mistranslation and Stallone was speaking in the past tense, referring to the last Rocky film and not any plans for more. This confusion seems to have affected every single possible English language source that I had researched.]

[UPDATE 2: Stallone's publicist (via AICN) has debunked this story definitively. Original story follows.]

After Sylvester Stallone wraps his fifth Rambo, apparently a curious creature feature and now officially given the go ahead to start shooting in the spring, it looks like Stallone is looking to once again revive his other iconic turn/cash cow. It seemed like a minor miracle to me that Rocky 6 was so well received and so going for a seventh roll of the dice seems at first like a gamble too far, but Stallone’s feeling quite philosophical:

When I was 21 years old and at drama school. My teacher said to me, ‘If you ever put your head out there, thousands of people will try to cut it off, but that’s exactly what you need to do as an artist.’ “I know it’s ludicrous and everyone would laugh. I would laugh about it. But I also know that I’d be successful if I can make this a film about becoming older, not about boxing but about myself.

Do you know what, I think he’s right, actually. Rock on Rocky 7.

He was reportedly speaking to Tele 5 in Germany, since which quotes have spread like wild fire across the web. I sourced my quotes from Teen Say.

Here’s just a touch more of what he said:

Even my wife says, ‘Don’t do it. You’re embarrassing the kids’. But I told her, ‘If I don’t try I’ll be a really unhappy man.’ You have to do it. Artists like me have to go through the dark over and over again.

Perhaps a leap into the true darkness of a non-franchise film would be good. Actually, that could include The Expendables, which still seems to be set pretty safely in Stallone’s 80s-brewed comfort zone, so maybe dabbling in a new genre would be necessary. Okay, basically, I’m wanting Stallone to do his long promised Edgar Allan Poe film. Am I alone in that?

    Go for it!!!!
  • This is what kills me about Stallone. Rambo and Rocky Balboa were movies that could have ended thier respective franchises in a great "that's how you end it" kind of way. Bringing these back over and over again only lessens the strength of the original (and subsequent good sequels- and I don't care what you say Rocky II-V were crap).

What I want to see from Stallone is more stuff like The Expendables- same kind of genre type film but a more original idea. I'm not against sequels but I am against throwing something aginst the wall just to see if it will stick (or make a little money off an existing name).
  • Exactly my thoughts. He's fucking up his own legacy.
  • aford88
    ROCKY IV.

How can you not like Rocky IV.

    It's ROCKY IV!!!
  • Tetsuo_Man
Watch the cinematic brilliance that is Rocky I... then watch Rocky IV and cry at how the movies are nothing alike. Rocky Balboa ended the series on a good note, and I am actually suprised to say this but I think he has a good idea with Rocky VII. This could be Stallone's Gran Torino for the character, him just sitting on the sidelines complaining about how things use to be and then dieing.
  • Pussy Galore
I think Rocky 6 ended a great franchise. It was, in my opinion, miles better than 5 and almost better than four. He created a man who was searching for an answer and i think he got it in 6. Normally, I say the more the merrier in films i like. Not this one. I think the last scene in Rocky 6 should be it.
  • REAL6
For Rambo that is. I'm always up for a new one as long as it's brutal. Rocky Balboa ended on a great note. Leave it at that. You're crazy Adam. Rocky 3 & 4 were good. 5 was horrible!!!
  • Okay, Clubber Lang and Thunderlips- really? Just asnwer me this- How many times can he beat the crap outta dudes and still- STILL- be the underdog? Take 2-5 outta the equation and you're left with the a fantastic story about the beginning and end of a boxer's life (professionally that is). You really don't need 2-5.
  • poirot
Technically, you really don't need Rocky 6 either. Or at least, you don't need Rocky to get back into the ring.

The whole point of the original Rocky is that he was a journeyman fighter that got a "million to one shot". Yet for the sequels, that over-the-hill club fighter was magically transformed into an iconic figure on par with Ali.

If you remove 2-5, it makes no sense for a club fighter to be able to compete on a championship level- let alone when he's pushing 60. Even Thunderlips was a more plausible scenario, since such exhibitions had been known to occur.

I realize George Foreman is often used to try and justify Rocky 6, but it doesn't hold up. For starters, Foreman was only 45. He had been steadily making a comeback- and staying active against solid opposition- since his late 30's. He was also losing a pretty one-sided fight against Michael Moorer until landing ONE lucky shot.

I love the Rocky series, but the sequels are much better at reflecting their respective times than any form of reality.
  • You make a good point. If it were up to me there would only be Rocky. No need for any sequel. But if the arguemnt is to be made that a sequel must happen I can see no better one than Rocky Balboa.

I see where you're coming from as far as "needing" 2-5 in order to justify 6 but I think that you could have easly got the point of his carreer via naritive in 6. If 2-5 were wiped from existance and we were given this storied tale of a Rocky's life from Rocky 1 on I think it could work in the context of the two films.

As far as age....well, I've got no good answer for that one.

"I love the Rocky series, but the sequels are much better at reflecting their respective times than any form of reality."

Couldn't have said it better myself.
  • Tetsuo_Man
Maybe... but I for one don't even look at Rocky as a "sports" movie. Sure he got a million-and-a-one shot at taking down the top dog, but was that the movie? No, and that's why the other films get it all wrong (up until 6). The entire movie is a love story (just look at the poster of the Adrien and Rocky holding hands!), about a poor guy trying to find a better life, at the end he realizes this is not boxing, and the movie ends, with the two of them announcing their love for each other.

Rocky 6 begins with him depressed over Adrien's death, a direct pickup to this. That's my thoughs anyways, and it makes sense considering how wrong the sequels (besides 6) seem when watching them back-to-back with the first one. It just dosen't fit, it doesn't feel right..
  • I just think that Stallone only has so many stories in his head and just whores out what he knows.
  • It would be so obvious and hamfisted it would be awful.

EDIT: There was a comment here that I was refuting. Sorry bout the double post.
  • Raey
Sounds like he wants to make rocky 7 'the wrestler'... he'll deserve a globe or an oscar nom atleast...
  • Doc
    Okay, so...Rocky II, plus...Rocky V equals...ROCKY SEVEN! ADRIAN'S REVENGE!
  • My thoughts exactly.
  • Rudin
It better be called Adrians Revenge! Hahaha...what the hell man!
  • fanboy_d
I was just thinking it's a good job Rocky Balboa came out before The Wrestler
  • Wow... that was one of the best things Sylvester Stallone, or ANY actor, could have said about artists. So true.

and yeah, GO STALLONE!!! I really admire this man.
  • joethefilmbuff
Dear Mr. Stallone, (not that you read this blog anyway but yea...)

With all due respect, I strongly believe that you should come to your senses and end this mid-life crisis madness of movie comebacks. Please sir, I beg you.

    Cheers,
    Guest
  • Hey, at least his mid-life crisis had a positive side, i don't know about you but i enjoyed Rocky 6 and Rambo 4. Anyway, i get your point and i completely agree.
  • Pussy Galore
I'm sorry but I'll have to disagree as well. Rocky's 2-5 crap? Yes 4 and 5 weren't good but come on. Two was amazing and Three. Mickey's Death!!!!! Hello? Powerful stuff. I can deal with 4 but 5 I agree was dog vomit. Actually, the first 40 minutes or so of 5 is okay, but when Tommy Gunn comes into the picture the movie goes down.
  • poirot
Yes, in terms of boxing, Rocky 3 is actually far more realistic than Rocky 6. The story of a boxer who loses his edge and focus is far more common than one who comes out of a lengthy retirement- in his 50s- and goes toe-to-toe with the heavyweight champ of the world.

There are numerous examples of the former, but very few fighters are able to continue on past their 40s.
  • zoey
    lol.
dead horse= still there to be beaten.
  • vva
I don't buy it. Stallone has said countless times it's over with Rocky. What is this interview even from?
  • Milk it for all it's worth, Stallone. As long as we keep paying to see 'em, he'll keep on milking 'em.
  • Why this is a bad idea? YOU ALREADY DID THE EXACT SAME THING IN YOUR LAST MOVIE! Here, when you say "But I also know that I’d be successful if I can make this a film about becoming older, not about boxing but about myself," that was your last movie. I'm old, but I can still beat your ass. We get it, Steroids. And it was already done in The Wrestler. Listen, Sly, baby, I can't wait for the Expendables, but don't do this to us. You ended the franchise on a high not with Rocky Balboa, don't push it.
  • LookiLOO
Ya'LL talk like he Gives Two SHitz about what you're Opinion counts for...?

  • oKAY I guess dat opinonzzzzz are not allowed cause IM not as FAMOus as SLYVESTER STAllone.

Okay, I won't do that for a whole rambling post, but yeah, Slyvester Stallone proabably doesn't care what I think. And why should he? He's rich and successful and whatnot. But I'm still allowed to think, and I think it's a bad idea. Who knows, maybe it'll be fantastic, but I really think he's pushing it. As for personal? Comeon, you must know as well as I do that the Rocky series is getting less and less personal for Stallone and more and more commercial. If he wants a personal story about getting old, make a movie about an old football star named Jermaine MacKenzie and go from there. But stop milking your most popular creation and drain it of all it's power.
  • bnitro
I love Sylvester Stallone and Rocky Balboa was great but come on! Go do Tango and Cash 2, but don't do another sequel just because. You ended the franchise on a high note, be proud of that.
  • Why continue? Both movies had good endings. It had come full circle. I think Rocky 6 covered the "getting older part" very well. There is no need for more. I think this is more of a personal thing. This is something he has to overcome in his private life, not in the movies.
  • Rocky 7 plot:
Rocky is settling in at his new home, "Shady Pines Retirement Home" when Shady Pines becomes victimized from budget cuts, and needs a charity event to save the home.
Rocky and Apollo Creed reuinite for the "old weight" championship.
    Rocky 8 plot:
same as 7, except his son returns as a pissed at his dad for being such a rotten father, because, gee, nobody knows why. In 8, Apollo Creed decides to take on Rocky's son to teach him a lesson, embittering Rocky and killing the friendship.
Oh, wait. Did Apollo die in rocky 4? Oh well, who cares; its a movie, and they can bring him back to life, anyway, right? Hell, they've brought rocky back from the dead how many times now? why not apollo?
    Rocky 9 plot:
Rocky is now almost 90. He can barely hear, and he can't see due to all the blows to the head. But, he is challenged once again to come out of retirement. Reluctantly, he does. He trains hanging on for dear life in his walker. He does remarkably well, as he is able to jump the rope 4 times in 5 minutes, and manages to fall only 3 of those times. But, alas, the 18 year old proves to be too much, and rips Rocky's head to oblivion, with less than 30 seconds left in the 10th and final round, when suddenly Rocky sees some lady resembling Adrian (his grand daughter, whom he can't remember, due to dementia) and says, "Yo! Adrian!" finds the strength to get up, and throws a left and then a right, and another left that knocks the crap out of the 18 year old. 90 year old Rocky wins the championship.
Then the nurse wakes him up and says, "Time to take your sleeping pill".
    Rocky 10 plot:
Adrian is so pissed that Rocky won't retire, she returns from the grave to challenge Rocky. To everyone's surprise, Adrian not only does a great fight, she actually wins.
  • Rocky 11: Rocky's gotten to old to fight anymore, so he must coach Jesus in his boxing mach vs. Satan. Of course, Mick's there to lend a helping hand.
  • Josh
I have no problem with this.
  • Money_Talks
I'm down with another 10 Rocky films. The boxing ring was the setting but the characters are what made those films so special..and the montage sequences. I would open heartedly welcome anything from Stallone. He's a very underrated filmmaker and a great story teller. I mean the guys got an Oscar...but was also in a film called Oscar...hmmm. Viva La Rock!
  • poirot
I can see Stallone making a few more Rambo films. Even though the series has long strayed from its original premise, it's a character that could logically sustain multiple adventures. Let's face it, the hero of the sequels has always been closer to a modern day Tarzan than the vulnerable soldier of First Blood.

I guess we can't be too surprised that he still thinks there's life in Rocky, though. After all, he just finished Rocky SIX, yet people act like that many trips to the well somehow made sense!
  • dagreenman18
okay on Rambo 5, but please no Rocky 7. Rocky 6 ended the series on a high note and was the best Rocky film since the original. A 7th movie would ruin that.
  • Nooo no no. Why must they recycle IP's beyond their use by date. Time to move on Mr Stalone.
  • tyrannicalsaurusrex
I have mixed feelings about this. Rocky Balboa showed us that Stallone can create a fantastic movie even when everyone doubts him. On the other hand, Rocky Balboa was such a great ending for the franchise that I just can't see where it'd go from there. But I'd guess that is why I'm not the one writing it!

I'll hold off my judgement until Rambo 5. The last movie was a pretty good ending for that franchise, too, so I'll judge his ability to pick up and continue in 2010, I guess.
  • Matt
The last movie WAS NOT GOOD.

I don't see how anyone could have done anything but laugh at that movie.
  • mckayla Belikov
I dont really have a problem with it.
Though i have to say, all those movies should have ended a long time ago.
Stallone still has a lot in him though, i think he could potentionally pull it off.
  • justrobby
He should go back to Porn
  • Matt
The newest Rocky and Rambo movies were embarrassingly terrible (and basically the same story in different circumstances). Through both movies, my friends and I found ourselves laughing AT, not with, the movie and Stallone's terrible acting. Stallone sounds like he has downs syndrome when he talks these days.

For Stallone to continue to try to milk these two franchises is pathetic.

"But I also know that I’d be successful if I can make this a film about becoming older, not about boxing but about myself."

Ummmm...wasn't the latest Rocky Movie about coming to terms with his age and proving to everyone that he could still box? What exactly comes after that in the saga? And why the f*** would anyone ever make a Rocky movie that's not about boxing? Does anyone really want to watch a movie about an aging boxer (who speaks like a drunken retard) without any boxing?

The only way I can see another movie working is if Rock became a trainer for a younger boxer. Wait, that happened in Rocky 5...two movies ago.
  • Is Stallone completely incapable of doing something new?
  • otnemeM
Sorry, but Tele 5 is just a shitty little TV station here in Germany. They simply c/p'd a quote from Stallone from 2005 or so regarding the making of ROCKY BALBOA.
    It's complete horse shit.
  • I. Mugsy
For Gawd's sake Stallone, LEAVE it at 6 - it was the PERFECT end to the series and you'll never be able to top that. Another film will also dilute the bitter-sweet ending of the 6th too. We don't want another string of so-so sequals after you got Rocky back to the top of the pack again.

Let it go out on a high - PLEASE.
  • will1138
The sequel logic of Back to the Future: Part 2 wasn't far off it seems...
  • nagremy2010
I side with those who argue that ROCKY BALBOA was the perfect end to the series and Stallone should leave the character in peace. That being said, if he insists on going to the well again, maybe they could actually do a good version of Rocky V. The story of Rocky training an up-and-coming fighter needn't be ridiculous. Rocky V was saddled with a lot of needless baggage, the brain injury, the poverty, not to mention a poor script and a subpar performance by Tommy Morrison. A story about Rocky trying to train a new version of himself might be a worthy conclusion. That being said, if Rocky puts on trunks and gets in the ring, I will punch myself repeatedly in the face.
  • ronisandy
Please, ROCKY BALBOA was a great ending...why on earth would sly fuck up his own legacy? damn it... be creative, man... let him fuck up Rambo, it's already doomed anyway, but not Rocky... especially after the good closure on Rocky 6!
  • Snippxx
Yes, i love Rocky so cant wait for a new movie! :D
