George Miller has appeared on ABC News in Australia, showing off the cars he’s having built for Mad Max 4 and discussing his plans for the movie. This includes some hard facts on the casting. After a short sharp burst of rumours, it’s good to get some straight and low-down.

You can see the video embedded below the break.

Did you spot the painted backdrop hanging there at the start of the clip, the desert and sky? I’d guess they’ve been filming screentests with actors behind the wheel. I’ve got no idea what else it could be getting used for.

Even Miller doesn’t know who the final cast are yet, he says, and though he’s been casting very busily for six or seven weeks, he’s still got a great heap of actors to see. Who else might we want to see stepping up to audition?

I found it very interesting to hear him default to talking about Australian actors. Could he be hoping to net some homegrown stars? It would be great if he could - though, of course he was speaking to an Australian broadcaster and may have been exaggerating his concern on this front accordingly.

I’m a great fan of Hugh Jackman, as I’m sure you know, and really enjoy Geoffrey Rush and Cate Blanchett too. Not sure that I can see any of these guys in leading Mad Max roles, however. Less well known talent, however, might be tapped, so how about Emily Browning,  Louis and Costas Mandylor maybe, or Peter Marshall from The Horseman? Chris Hemsworth is too busy with Thor, though, I’m sure. Who have I forgotten? Any experts on Oz actors out there?

Miller’s comments about the talent drain taking the best Australian actors and crew members overseas are maybe rather sad, but I’m encouraged by his enthusiasm in trying to create a need, and therefore employment.

  • As a West Australian boy I should probably be championing Sam Worthington, but frankly, the most exciting name I've heard tossed around is Jeremy Renner. Sure he's not Australian, but at least he's not boring as batshit (see: Worthington).
  • Money_Talks
Hey man, I'm a Perth boy too (Rockingham - Sam's hometown) and I think he'd be awesome. I think Miller and the rest of the film industry in Oz should take a hard look at what WA has to offer in terms of locations, technology and willingness to make this the Hollywood (or Wellington) of Australia. We have everything here, why can't the Australia and the World see that there is more to OZ than the east coast (and the Middle with that big rock)
  • Hey I'm also in Perth WA. I saw on TV this morning Miller is shooting Mad Max 4 in Sydney (or, at least, country NSW). Sam Worthington seems an obvious choice so I hope Miller doesn't go there. A no-name would be a delightful risk.
  • Anrkist
Worthington is a no-name. He's done Terminator and that's it. Yeah, he's got some stuff in the works... and it looks like he did some TV a bit... but nothing big. Perhaps if you live in Australia he's not a no-name. =]
  • edc2
yeah, avatar is a little indy flick. [rolleyes]
  • CyT
The problem is that the East Coast has the big soundstages and a fairly intact industry of people already in place. Being an SA boy Ive noticed recently that a few more films are being shot in our state, so hopefully they keep moving West more often. I think you should petition the government to build some sound stages in your part of the world though cos you're right about WA having a huge range available for use in film.
  • SomeGuy
I still would like to see Tom jane as Max...I know he's not Aussie, but he'd be perfect.
  • Roy
i think they should go for an unkown Australia actor instead of a major Australian actor like Sam Worthington. i even like Jeremy Renner even he is not Australia. i could see people like Callan Mulvey from the tv show RUSH and underbelly in it. Gyton Grantley would be another person i could see as max.
  • filmkid
Sam Worthington is still unknown actor yes he did some major movies but he still learning to handle himself in major movies.
  • Name
    I like the movie.
  • Danos
Joel Edgerton, Ben Mendelson, Anthony Hayes, Michael Dorman, Guy Pearce, David Field, Alex O'Loughlin, Noah Taylor, Anthony Hayes, Nick Cave, Callan Mulvey, Daniel Almalm..

all are mostly unknown outside of Oz, but thats a badass all australian cast anyway.
  • FunkyMunkey
    Eric Bana?

He would be GREAT as Mad Max
  • FreakCLAW
No way... bring the ol' Gibson back into it... I mean if Stallone and Ford can bring back Rocky, Rambo, and Indy, then why can't a much younger Mel go back to the roots that got him out of Australia in the first place. It might actually get that freakin God-Nazi a couple of fans back. In all seriousness though, I think that Bana is a great choice. He is one of the few bad ass enough to bring the Max into a new generation of hardcore fans.
  • doogleberrywinkler
Eric Bana loves his muscle cars too, and is pretty decent behind the wheel... it almost seems the perfect fit.
  • sgtzim
I'd completely written this movie off as BS, 'cause of all the BS I'd been hearing for years, so I'm kinda shocked it's actually happening. Let's hope this one fares better than the steaming turd that was Thunderdome....
  • waqman
Holy shit this is actually happening. If not Mel Gibson (which is a shame) then at least make it one of the following:

    Eric Bana
    Russell Crowe
    Michael Fassbender
  • Mr X
word on the street.... Eric Bana
  • I, Mugsy
    Well... the cars look GREAT.

And you know what? Mr Gibson looks awsome in the trailer for 'Edge of Darkness'. JUST the right age to portray a grizzled world-weary Max. Come on DO THE RIGHT THING Mr Miller:

    1) Use Gibson to portray Max and see where he is as a character now - the possibilities are endless. It would be great to see whether the world pulled itself back together again (and how Max fits into/or not, this world) or got worse...

If Indy and Rocky AND Rambo can do their thing still so can Max - surely.

    2) LEAVE THE CHARACTER ALONE - concentrate on an entirely new character(s) but please DO NOT think of recasting Max. It's just ludicrous/insane and will be retreading over old ground and will NOT be a success. Just yet another popcorn flick/remake that comes/goes with barely a splash.

Continuing with Mel WILL gurantee a high return and possibility of a new trilogy of films.

Please don't screw this franchise up as Hollywood seems to do every 5 mins these days...

    BBM - Bring Back Max/Mel ;)
  • M. Riggs
I'm with this guy! If its not Mel Gibson, I could give a crap about seeing it.
There is NO other Mad Max out there.
  • FreakCLAW
The problem is Mel's reputation these days... I would agree with you on one end that using another character is sacrilege but Gibson has become a real douche these days. Basically... the man has gone a little crazy. If it was a continuation of the story, then definitely... there could be no one else but Gibson. But, if it was more of a retelling, then they NEED new blood in this franchise and they are not going to get it from that damned aging God-Nazi.
  • CyT
I can see Worthington fitting this type of role well, and it would be good to see him come home for some filming and not completely setup shop in Hollywood. After seeing The Last Ride, I reckon Miller should shoot an old and weathered Max with Hugo Weaving though :) That would make for an interesting film!
  • Ian
Building more soundstages will make matters worse. The last major film to be made at Fox Studios in Sydney was Superman Returns. No point in building more studios if you dont have the films. Green Lantern was to be shot here, now long gone. As for South Australia, films were being shot there 30 years ago, before there were studios.
  • doogleberrywinkler
isn't the majority of filming to be shot in Broken Hill... i.e. not in East Coast sound stages?!?
  • Hamish Lee Douglas

Move to America where they actually make movies
  • danno
Mr Lee Douglas could you read out the following lines - just whenever you're ready.
  • Barry
    Hamish, sell yourself.
Contact Kennedy Miller Mitchell Co or even Dr D studios and ask for Miller.
    Why not?
Who's to say he wont be impressed by a direct, pro-active approach?
Show up at the office with headshot and bio and demo reel, have someone put it on his desk and ask for an apppointment.
Be keen, be nice about it and do it soon!!!
I have to ask though: you claim to have an agent.
Why have you not had your agent advise you about his and set all this up already?
All agents recieved the same casting briefs and it's their job to get you working.
Lastly, there are many roles still going so kick your agent in the ass and get her working for you.
    Best of luck.

40 year old Steve Innes was also from Perth, Australia and was the one reported to be alreaty cast as Max over a year ago.
There was even a Youtube video of his audition and screentests and some media reporting the "casting coup" which were pulled down by Kennedy/ Millers order - something to do with breach of confidentiality.
Not much has been heard of seen of Innes since, leading to speculation it was a teaser casting and set off the feud between himself and American actor Renner, who's call to Innes's house to convince him to reliquish the role was recorded and broadcast on the radio here and again on Youtube.
Even that was months ago though.
Anyway, what is Mad Max 4 even about????
Someone told me it's not even set in Australia anymore and not even in the 21st century, when Max is about 60.
Someone said it's set in the far future and all the characters are DNA derived clones of the originals.
    WTF????
  • the word
Tom hardy would eat the spleen of any of the above mentioned actors. If you haven't seen bronson, you're missing out. That guy, outside of gibson, is the only one i could honestly believe in the role. Bana's a good actor but he can't do batshit insane, sorry, he can't. And if mad max is anything it's insane. If blanchett ends up in mad max, i'm officially done with film all together. Hopefully it will be a bunch of no names and Hardy.
