With a new trailer for James Cameron’s Avatar hitting theaters this weekend, a batch of new high quality production photos has shown up online via SpoilerTV. Check out a couple of the photos after the jump, or click on through to see them all. And be sure to enlarge the photos to see them in high resolution. Want to know what the new trailer may bring? /Film reader Luke B has sent in a spy report, included after the jump.

Here is what Luke said:

First off, this trailer has a lot of the same footage already in the first teaser. It was only about halfway through that I realized that this was the new trailer. This one has a lot more plot in it, they introduce the female Na’vi character and the romance between her and the main character. We get to see a lot of cool images, like the evil human general character (I’m assuming he’s evil) in a giant mech destroying things, but with a cup of coffee in his hands. We also get glimpses of the Michelle Rodriguez character (she says something along the lines of, “We’re going up against machines and all we’ve got are sticks!” so I’m assuming she joins the good guys) and some of the other Na’vi. I don’t remember too many of the other details. Overall though, this trailer had a much more epic feel to it. I was one of the many who was disappointed when the teaser was revealed, but this has brought my hype level up.

Official plot synopsis: AVATAR takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, AVATAR delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

AVATAR opens in theaters everywhere December 18, 2009.

bring it. i'm still pumped for avatar. especially after reading the "scriptment"
  • Spence_Mgence
I also read the "scriptment" (I assume we read the same thing). I was on the fence about this movie until I finished it and wow, I cannot be more excited for this film. It will rock on all levels, but I feel it will under-perform at the BO. Your thoughts?
  • Rockie
I'm really excited to see the creatures. Pandora is exactly what they said it would be. Dangerous yet jaw dropping in its beauty. If he pulls off half of these wonders it will be a great ride at the movies.

as far a box office goes i'd say he has a mild hit. i don't think it will smash doors down, but it won't fail. the story is kinda been there done that but the way it was handled made me blast through the story. As i said....the creatures. Scary as hell.

Maybe this will show my ignorance but, what's so special about his movie again? Sure, it's supposed to have groundbreaking effects and some new technologies, but the effects look the same to me as say, Lord of the Rings. Mr. Cameron says he's been working on the story for 14 years and yet, to me, it doesn't seem very original. I guess I just don't understand why everyone is really hyped for this movie. The actors are decent - no one too amazing (as far as I know), the character design for the aliens is rather weak, and the plot is just . . . uninteresting. Personally, I'm having a hard time generating excitement for this film. I would gladly have someone change my mind.
  • Exactly my thoughts. Especially the character design for the aliens fills me with disgust. Look at games like Mass Effect. Now that's how it should be!
  • pupu809
stop thinking like a gamer and mass effect sucks and is too fictional
  • Dont yout dare slacking Mass Effect!
  • No aaaaaand no.
  • starscream9289
My thoughts exactly. I'm probably still gonna watch it, though.
  • fanboy_d
I think the technological advancement is groundbreaking for the industry, but not for the audience. Which is kind of a big deal.
  • lipslikeasukal
100% agree. Beyond my imagination? No. The aliens are just blue tiger people. I hope that that's not the ground-breaking everyone and their mama is talking about.

If anything else, if it's pretty, it may be worth an IMAX viewing (are they going to do that)?
  • the photos are... terrible... but I remember what Jeffrey Wells (blogger of Hollywood Elsewhere) said. He said that you really have to see the movie to believe how amazing it is. Apparently, AVATAR is one of a kind movie-watching experience.

That being said, the photos really don't do justice for the film's touch of magic.
  • Bring it!
  • redhawk23
while the images themselves are pretty good whats supposed to be so groundbreaking about this film is the motion of the cg characters, they have gotten the motion capture to a point where it is nearly all actor driven instead of animator driven (though they still do the ears and touch up work)
While lord of the rings was impressive, gollum was only based on andy circus, not driven by him, animators still had to do the heavy lifting.
  • clarencesomerset
You got it spot on. For those intimate with tech details and industry people, I'm sure the technology Cameron developed to create Avatar was groundbreaking. But to the general audience, it is what they see that's impressive. Look at how, 300, which did not employ any revolutionary technology, won over the box office with its distinctive style.
  • Rick
I don't understand all the hate for this movie. What were people expecting? I think the movie looks awesome and will be there on day one.
  • name
The big problem I have is the navi designs are terrible. They look like saturday morning cartoons from the 80's.

    They look silly.
  • Levi Miller
I respect that information about the motion capture. Don't get me wrong, I am going to see the movie in order to discover just how "new of an experience" the movie is. Aside from the technological advancements, and I'm not trying to perpetuate an argument or anything, but what else does this movie really offer? Or to rephrase - is all the hype just because of the new technology or are there people who actually care about the characters and story?
  • Weyland_Yutani
I think it's easy to overlook the true draw of this film - James Cameron directing a science fiction- action film. The man knows how to deliver an action sequence better than almost anyone making films. It's just a shame that you have to go pretty far back to get to his last efforts. James Effin Cameron.

It's not where the story goes nearly so much as how Cameron gets you there. I don't doubt the man.
  • Egon
So I heard there's gonna be a sex scene?
  • starscream9289
    Fantastic.

I would love to see a blue penis thrusting at me IN 3 FUCKING DIMENSIONS!
  • waqman
Hasn't this film already changed the industry in some small way? I didn't see so many 3D films coming out of the wood-work before Cameron was yapping about them. And I think the CG isn't revolutionary, but it is definitely an evolution. Look at Gollum and then look at these characters (when the 3 and a half minute trailer hits). There will definitely be a difference in quality. This makes me excited to see what WETA's work will be like on the dragon in the hobbit. They are on top at the moment, I'm sure this film really helped them.
  • RocknRolla
The fact is that massive lengths have been taken to breathe new life into not only science fiction, but in cinema in general -- and yeah, we'll have to wait till December to see if this world is driven by a well told narrative -- but really, I'm not expecting the story to be original... but I am expecting to be taken to and immersed in another world and to be shown a new experience... and judging from what I saw on screen, this looks more than likely.

With respect to the hype, I think they are just getting started. People need to be patient and wait for more footage and whatnot.

Seeing people doubting james cameron's genius is so heart breaking personally. What more does the man have to prove? some people won't be satisfied with anything I guess.
  • No one's doubting his genius-- it just appears that this particular film will fall short, is all. We'll never forget Terminator 2, Aliens or The Abyss.
  • djoser
    He was caught plagiarizing Terminator from 2 Harlan Ellison written Outer Limits episodes (which is why Ellison is mentioned at the end of T2);
the Abyss was a box office nightmare, albeit a great movie (the stories about how it was made, though, far outweigh the interest of, say, repeat viewings - least for me.)

And Aliens was Alien on steroids. I won't even mention Titanic, content wise.

I personally think Cameron's history is a tell tale case of delusions of grandeur & over-hyping one's own abilities - which obviously is a way to get ahead in hollywood but -
my assessment is that he's at his best when working with other talented EFX wizards, i.e. Stan Winston; or actors (Kate Winslet, Sigourney Weaver) who can bring CHARACTER to his wildly imagined EFX extravaganzas.

In this case - I have a STRONG feeling that the timing of production for Avatar (the last 8 years) would mean that he saw someone who could bail him out of having a complete lack of story, when he saw WETA's work on Lord of the Rings.

Cameron's most impressive feats are his astronomical budgets & insanely grandiose God-complex (ask Linda Hamilton).
But with the dough he coughs up, I'm sure Peter Jackson saw a profitable partnership that - as Harlan Ellison well knows - he'll have an EXTREMELY difficult time getting ANY significant credit for.

    Best FX: James Cameron, Avatar.
(a'hem. King of the World? Isn't there someone you should be thanking by now ... I'm sorry? Mr. Jackson?)
  • Weyland_Yutani
I pretty much disagree with you on most points here, but we will have to wait it out for Avitar. I think Cameron deserves every respect. As action sequences go, you are hard pressed to argue that anyone has ever done it better. Cameron understands rising tension and release. He is one of the few filmmakers that have the ability to focus long enough to see his vision reach the screen.

For fans of film, and especially action film, there is a debt owed to whatever perfectionist-crazy the man has. That vision has inspired other filmmakers and has delivered some of the best, most-loved action films of all time.
  • It's a movie. It's not going to come off the screen and hug you.

I enjoy hyping up movies. Sorta makes the last minutes before you see it more exciting. And I'll enjoy the movie. And everyone else will-- regardless of what their shame says.
    I'll be there opening weekend.

I was disappointed with the teaser too. I watched it on my laptop. Of course, that's not how this teaser or film was or is supposed to be seen. Missed out on the AVATAR event in August because Fox wouldn't bring it to my area. But I finally saw the teaser in a digital theatre where I was blown away. It gave me goose bumps. The Na'vi are probably going end up being the most divisive characters to ever grace a screen at this rate. Yeah, their ThunderSmurfs moniker is definitely appropriate but I think since we've seen so little of them, that we will all be pleasantly surprised come December. I just bought Midnight show tickets too. Can't wait.
  • Look at those two images together in that post. When placed side-by-side the character rendering becomes so apparent. They just don't seem to 'blend' somehow, I dunno... I didn't buy it on Avatar Day and I'm not buying it now. Shamefully I WILL be buying a ticket when it opens, just so I can accurately rag on it later.
  • RocknRolla
It's alright... you'll just be one of many Johnny-come-latelies.

Once the wow factor wears off you start to let the whole "game changer" bullshit go and will be there, part of it - totally immersed in the world.

It's an easy guess that word of mouth is going to drive this movie.
  • goobity
I love grainy and blurry "High Resolution" pictures.
  • The Pwny Express
The picture on the header of this article is the first thing from Avatar to really "wow" me. It really looks incredible.
  • lipslikeasukal
It's too bad that the Na'vi don't wow you. Effin' blue tiger people. But to be fair, I'd have to see them in motion on the big screen too fully judge. It's just so far, not so good.
  • richCie
i still think the Na'vi look horrible. i'm not sure i could actually watch the film with them in it without thinking "why choose such a stupid looking alien race?" the entire time.
  • Octoberist
yeah, i don't think it's the CGI that's the problem, it's the designs. I'm giving the movie a chance, but yeah, they look generic.
  • richCie
i wudnt say they look generic - they just look awful - i'm really not liking the look of the film at present and considering how generic the plot is - i really can't say i've got much expectations for this film
  • rowdy
can any one say what movie the trailer is in front of
