Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy Up For Mad Max 4?

theron_and_hardy

It’s a pretty sure bet that Mel Gibson won’t have anything at all to do with a fourth Mad Max movie, but what are the odds on Tom Hardy inheriting the estimable mantle of Max Rockatansky? Very good apparently. And how about Charlize Theron also joining the line up? If we are to believe ‘multiple sources’, then that’s just how it’s all shaking out right now.

E! Online report that George Miller is casting for the 4th Max right now. They tell us that everything is shrouded in secrecy and the actors coming in to see director George Miller are only being given a letter of the alphabet by which to identify their character. So how have E! linked Hardy to the lead? Was he the letter M?

It’s moderately safe to assume that Theron’s character is a new one and she wouldn’t be playing Max’s wife Jessie or Thunderdome’s Aunty Entity - though that would definitely be stop-and-stare mind boggling.

The E! peeps are also keen to note that no formal offers have been made let alone contracts signed. By their standards, this means the film is “a long way from frutition” but I think we geeks could school them in that. Didn’t we keenly keep tabs on Inglourious Basterds for almost a decade and a half, for example? A year or two is not much at all in this realm.

What else do we know about the proposed Mad Max sequel?

- Jeremy Renner was rumoured for the lead role back in August. I’d hazard to guess he was another man handed a mysterious letter of the alphabet and called in to audition.

- That there’s another, 3D animated Max in development. Well, either that or this one is going to be the animated one - or maybe motion captured. Nobody really knows yet, I suppose. It’s that whole shrouded in secrecy thing again.

- Some previous work on a 4th Mad Max has seen Miller collaborating closely with comics artist Brendan McCarthy, who some have credited as the film’s screenwriter. McCarthy and Miller have reportedly even gone so far as storyboarding pretty much the entire film.

- At which point, the film had the working title of Mad Max: Fury Road.

  • Tom Hardy as Max is inspired casting. He's easily the best actor of his generation, as proven in 'Bronson' and 'Stuart: A Life Backwards'.

Fingers crossed that he's the new Max; that it gets greenlit and it's not a cartoon.
  • Mad Max is a classic. I only hope this fourth installment by Miller adds to the films and doesn't take anything away. It'd be a real shame if -- decades later and semingly for no reason at all -- part four turned out a stinker.

I just hope that Michael Fassbender attended that meeting
  • Please don't let this be true. I'm really not liking all these revamps of old IP's out to make a buck. If they really have something to add to the story fine but none of them seem to do that.

aint Tom Hardy too big to play Mad Max the guy looks like a body builder now his been training in the gym for a long time plus he been doing alot of MMA training. he would of been good for the new Predators (2010) movie.
  • papasanchez
Good call on predator. He would be a much better lead in that than adrien brody!!

Tom hardy is not as big as he is in bronson. He bulked up majorly for that role. Check him out in guy ritchies rock n rolla. Think mr hardy would make an awesome max. Honestly, think he would be great in anything. One of our "ones to watch". A real talent. Also check him out in a tv series called the take. It was four episodes of gangster horror. Brilliant!!
  • anthonyb
agreed. The making of showed Tom bulking up for his bronson role. and yes The Take is superb. Tom Hardy is a rising star who you can't take your eyes off whenever he is on screen.
  • wheeeeeeee!
i like that picture of her boooobies!!!
  • Gotta love Charlize Theron...not a big fan of making another Mad Max, though.

    WTFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!

This is easily the most depressing movie-related news I've heard all year. If it couldn't be Mel, it had to be either:

    Russell Crowe
Eric Bana (he can be tough)
Michael Fassbender (not an Aussie but still waaay better choice than Hardy)

Tom Hardy's not that special. And I'm sick of all this attention he's getting. If anything we have another Christian Bale on our hands. Give us Fassbender
  • waqman
But the best idea would have been a grizzled old Mel Gibson, he still looks tough. And he would be a badass old wastlander.
  • dee_dee_n
seriously! If its another sequel id LOVE to see Mel return as Mad Max!

Plus, this Tom Hardy guy isnt THAT impressive. I liked Stuart:A life backwards, but Bronson i thought was kinda garbage.

I hate when people start having a go at an actor/director etc because they are getting some positive praise. People are entitled to there opinion but sometimes I feel some people may just enjoy putting people down. If tom hardy had only done one film and it was some sort of 80's romantic throw back the haters would probably have thought he was a "cool" new find.

What I'm saying is don't judge someone until you've seen all the material.
  • papasanchez
It would be great for mel Gibson to be in it but only briefly. I don't think it would be possible for mel to hold up the action at his age, unfortunately.

Maybe have him in it as a mentor type?
  • waqman
Did you see the Edge of Darkness trailer? He looked more badass than recent Harrison Ford for sure. And also come on. You know an old Road Warrior would be badass. They tried to make him look older in the original anyways, giving him grey-ed hair. Now he's the real deal. And he still looks like he can put up a fight.

Anyways like I said if not Gibson then either: Fassbender, Crowe or Bana. Hardy can eat it .
  • papasanchez
I must admit, your argument is sound. Mel g does look great in EOD and it might be cool to have an old mad max, but I still feel it's too late for mel in MM4 and might look a bit embarrasing. We still don't know what EOD is really like.

Anyways I'm a big fan of tom h and think we can agree to disagree about him.

    Good chat though.

A Mad Max that doesn't have Mel Gibson in it will be a pass for me. Might as well do a reboot rather then a sequel without Gibson.

George Miller: Get off your ass and bargain harder for Mel. No one wants a Mad Max without Mel in it!! Even Charlize's fine looks wont save it.
