The Wolfman Movie Trailer #2: A Moody, Modern Approach

wolfman_trailer_21

There’s a new trailer for Joe Johnston’s remake of Universal’s The Wolfman. If you didn’t like the first trailer, which really sold the film as a piece of gothic old-school horror, you’ll probably like this one a lot more.

The first trailer was very much what you’d expect: here’s the legend of the wolfman, here are the characters, here’s what happens to them. But it was almost too pagebound. This trailer is very different, and far more modern in approach. It’s more like a music video than anything else, married as it is to a slightly dark but mostly generic goth/industrial rock tune, which actually works quite well in this context. (I’m sure I should know this song, but can’t place it.)

And then there are many flashes of characters and scenes. We get the malevolence of Anthony Hopkins, the suffering of Benicio Del Toro, and some transformation glimpses that actually look pretty great. Did those reshoots help? I liked the transformation sequences in the original trailer, and I like them more here. There’s new footage in here, too, and it all looks great.

More than anything else, this trailer works because it has a sense of mystery. Seeing it, I want to know more about what goes on, where the first clip just left me feeling like the film would be entirely predictable. And perhaps it is. This might just be a great piece of salesmanship on Universal’s part. This trailer proves that context is everything; hopefully the movie will work on its own terms.

Apple has the trailer in HD, and I really recommend checking it out in that format. The Wolfman is directed by Joe Johnston (of the upcoming Captain America) and stars Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving. It opens on February 12, 2010.

STUPID. This is completely the wrong marketing strategy for this film. What, the victorian set story has a rock soundtrack? This is a film about mood, and light and dark, i mean it's evident in how it was shot. Also, the CGI looks terrible. Rick Baker publicly stated his disapproval in the direction the actual "wolf" was going. Rather than using traditional makeup and have an improvement on the transformation (IE an even better one than was in "An american werewolf in london") they opted with the more expensive and worse looking finger bending transformation. WHY? USE REAL MAKEUP!!! I am sick of looking at shitty motion capture when they could just actually use the actors.
  • Goddamn! Been holding out for this for too long! I just hope the transformations 'sell' and the CGI doesn't appear too animated. No one has really done it right since Rick Baker's magic in An American Werewolf In London so, this is his chance to top that.

I believe I was let down after watching the first trailer but this trailer got me stoked. The shots of the Wolfman looked stunning and brutal; I hope the full transformation is just as raw. Nonetheless, it's nice having a movie to look forward to in february :)

first trailer: maybe 5% anticipation for this movie
this trailer: probably 95% WOAH. awesome job cutting this, whoever you are.
sounds kind of like a reworked version of the NIN song from the terminator trailer.

My favourite horror film character on the big screen?....now thats worth waiting for to me. BTW did you see Rick Baker get taken out in the trailer? Good stuff.

I could swear thats Rick Baker at 1:22
  • Got some views of Hugo Weaving and Anthony Hopkins looking badass. Those two are the reasons I will be seeing this.

    Always liked Joe Johnston.

Hmm. Not sure about either of the trailers. The cast seems great, but something is missing. I'm not a huge fan of classic, period films having a decidedly "modern" trailer. It kind of sells both sides short. I would way rather have a trailer that hints at the transformation in the coolest way possible and then cut to the title. Stop giving away the movie.

Seriously this film would have been great with Mark Romanek. But then they switched to Joe Johnston? That guy's absolute crap...and it shows here once again. These trailers stink. Not even Benicio and Hopkins can save it.

The song was in the tales of the black freighter trailer!

looks alot better than i was expecting.

    Looks fucking awesome
  • People actually prefer that trailer to the first? The first was great; dark, gothic, and really captured the tone of the classic horror films of old. This is just generic slap-dash editing set to techno-fied butt-rock. Looks like a videogame trailer. Meaning, lame.

This has to be the first movie whose font for the movie poster has made me want to not see it. J.J Abrams, GET YOUR FONT OFF OF OTHER PEOPLE'S STUFF!!!!

I think the most people should look for in this movie is a modern update on the classic Universal Wolf Man movie from the 40s, nothing more. Just expect and hope for a good monster movie. That's all I want, and if I get even more than that, then it will be even more awesome.

The second trailer absolutely kills the first, but I'm still worried about it. The first one left nothing to imagination and really made me think it would bomb. Now this trailer makes me wonder if they can pull it off.
I'm thinking less that it will bomb, because that trailer with those actors can sell this movie, but will it be good? I have my serious doubts.

    i'm down.

not super excited but i ain't gonna blast it.

The transformation.... if it is mind-blowing I'll love it. If it's anything less, then the movie will be a waste. I truly think when it comes to a lycan movie the transformation is 100% indicative of the rest of the movie's quality
  • what is that song, "I Am Your Wolfman" instead of "I Am Your Vampire" by Marilyn Manson?

    Movie looks pretty decent.
  • The song in the trailer sounds similar to Manson's "If I Was Your Vampire" but that's not the song.

    "If I Was Your Vampire"

I thought the same thing. They tweaked it a bit. Reminds me of the Max Payne trailer, but unlike that abomination, I have very high hopes for this.

this should have been the first trailer, seems more like a long teaser.
  • Mellowie
Looking forward to this one. If anything just as a fun date movie.
  • eddymovies
My my, there's a lot of finger bending in this movie.
  • This is going to bomb. These trailers are prettttty mediocre and I just cant see most people wanting to go see it. The cgi on the wolfman is very good.. but the greenscreening at times was terrible. and i think that shows the sensibilities of the film... it all feels like a lower budget film trying to be more than what they can actually pull off.

I hope he uses the same cinematographer for Captain America
  • detstabler
Definitely prefer the second to the first.
