We’ve known that Blade director, Stephen Norrington, was scribing a theatrical remake of 1994’s The Crow for almost a year now by following all the milky Goth tears. And now, according to an unidentified source via Mania, Norrington has finally submitted his script to Relativity Media (The Wolf Man, A Serious Man), where it has been “very well received.”

The source also says that the movie, yet another adaptation of James O’Barr comic book character, is moving forward to the casting stage. What a relief says an unidentified, easily persuaded Crow loyalist. If anything, the tidbit places the project back on our radar, and makes me ponder who should land the role of the undead, murdered rock musician (discussed below). Norrington has avoided the scorn of the franchise’s followers, some of whom rival Juggalos in 24/7 Halloween silliness, by declaring his script a revamp and not a remake; i.e. The Crow won’t be “Eric Draven,” the one associated with Brandon Lee, the late actor who died on the set in Wilmington, North Carolina from a shootout scene gone awry.

Last year Norrington was quoted with the following:  [the film will be] “realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style” compared to Alex Proyas’s ’90s hard rock noir original. Proyas announced on /Film back in March that he’s against the idea of a remake, but this is arguably like Tim Burton quibbling about future Batman entries. And it sounds as if Norrington is going for an R-rating, which is agreeable enough to hold out on the hate.

I’ll be honest: ever since a chubby Edward Furlong played the broody superhero in the form of a guy named Johnny Cuervo in 2005’s diaper The Crow: Wicked Prayer aka The Crow IV, I can’t resist smirking at future incarnations. (Not to mention the long canceled TV series, The Crow: Stairway to Heaven.) My on-crack casting would have a vengeful Noel Fielding from The Mighty Boosh guitar soloing off a foggy rooftop in front of a full moon (which he’d also play) in a hard-R comedy version set in drug-fueled London.

What actor—man or woman—should suit up as The Crow for the aughts? If you say, “The Rock,” you will be banned.

    tough call
who could pull off this character? Whoever it is will always be compared to Brandon Lee.
I don't think this movie needs to be made. Of course I didnt think the other Crow movies needed to be made.
    Havn't we had enough remakes/re-imaginings?
  • Maybe it's just me but I think The Crow reboot won't be as good as the original. I usually tell people reboots are a good thing and drop Batman and Hulk all the time to back up my argument. I think this project will give people a good rebuttal to the argument of remakes.
  • ZAC EFRON !!!!! Ok, I'm just kidding...
  • Dangeresquetoo
Not for nothing...if Z.E. was looking to shed his bubble gum image, this might be the vehicle to get it done. These days, Johnny Deep is known for being much more than a Tiger Beat cover. Could this be where Efron breaks away from it as well?
  • thatguyrom
Ugh. Wicked Prayer was such an awful, awful movie.
  • Mattikus
    Ryan Gosling.
  • Craigasorusrex
Joseph Gordon Levitt could be a good candidate for the role.
  • matt_od
exactly my choice. I mentioned this to a friend a couple weeks ago when we were talking about future crow projects....
    soo....
    good on you! i agree
  • Tetsuo_Man
    Agreed.
  • Alex Boultwood
Brandon ROuth! Or just to ruin the franchise....VIN DIESEL! Then if he's too good for the sequel then they can just get Ice Cube in on the cheap!

I reckon its gonna be Stuart Townsend.
  • monkeymafia
For the HUGE following the original had when it came out, I'm kinda surprised this film doesn't come up more in film geek speak.... I haven't seen it in forever but we all love Alex Proyas round these parts, right? Is it that forgettable of a film at this point? It's a shame because I really only remember the sorrow I felt of losing Brandon Lee, someone who brought more to the role than what was expected from an a comic book movie in that era
  • Octoberist
i honestly don't know. For a while it was a part of pop culture..maybe it was the sequels. but sequels didn't hurt movies like Jaws did it? ;)

I like The Crow a lot, though I prefer Proyas' Dark City.
  • Name
I would like to see Ben Foster or Nick Stahl give it a try.
  • Tetsuo_Man
Ben Foster has way too girly of a voice. Everything he says sounds like it's coming from a one of the munchkin people from Wizard of Oz. He was okay in Pandorum but only because he didn't talk to much....
  • lucascott
you can work on a voice. actors do it all the time. learn an accent with a coach.
  • Do we really want to hear Ben foster with a voice like Batman?
  • lucascott
i didn't say he would. not all "deeper" voices sound like Batman, or
    even Bale.
  • Shaydon
I agree with Joseph Gordon Levitt or Ben Foster.
Both could really elevate this movie back to where it is supposed to be.
  • I hate tagging along but Foster or Gordon-Levitt would be great.
  • probot
Joseph Gordon Levitt or maybe James Franco maybe?
  • tleblanc
I agree with Levitt, but Franco looks to much like James Dean. I don't think that would work.
  • Trevor
If you've seen the movie "Stay", Gosling could do it. There needs to be a redone version that is closer to the graphic novel, Zack Snyder style. This guy was a f*ckin lunatic with a cause in the book. I could care less who stars, just make them the real deal!
  • Dysthymia83
I wish they had made Rob Zombie's "Crow" script that took place in a futuristic setting.
  • Maybe it's just his turn in The Dark Knight still rubbing off on me, but in a post-TDK world, I could have seen Heath Ledger playing a "revamped" version of The Crow.

Now, though, I could probably see Ben Foster in the role. Really, anyone who's played a lunatic who can form coherent thoughts.
  • tleblanc
I completely agree with the Ledger, and if he were still around he'd be my first choice. When you think about it, he wouldn't have to practice much to play the role after playing the joker, i find the two characters are alot alike. Not just face and make-up, but their movements, emotions, expressions, etc.
  • RocknRolla
    Jared Leto would be cool.

I just hope they have a good villain.
  • benheckenkamp
    I could see Jared Leto.
  • greggorybasore
dania ramirez would be great if the did a movie off of The Crow: Flesh and Blood
  • benheckenkamp
Hear me out... Crispin Glover. Think about it.
  • robert
Maybe Joseph Gordon-Levitt if your going for with Eric's Story. Levitt is a decent actor with more talent then star power, but die hard fans will see this to either criticize or praise
  • lucascott
the crow isn't some big brawny guy. he's more sleek like a panther. gymnast, dancer, kung fu. so yeah The Rock, totally wouldn't work. I would give Joseph a go. but the first person that came to mind was actually the snotty brat kid from Harry Potter, the blonde. I get stuck having to take my younger sibs, who are nuts for those movies, but I remember being pretty impressed with him in the last movie. give him a punk boy emo sort of haircut, dye it black, could work. plus I heard he's a musician so they could easter egg that bit from the comics even if they aren't using Eric Draven
  • Just NOT Ryan Reynolds, please. He is never the answer.
  • Octoberist
    long live ryan reynolds.
  • Lightemup
I haven't given it too much thought too it. Maybe that guy that played Gambit from the Wolverine movie?
  • Octoberist
i get so angry sometimes when I think what happened to the franchise after the first one with Brandon Lee. Is it me, or was it disrespectful to have crappy sequel one after another..as if they're not even trying to make any decent movies out of the franchise?
  • Yeah and the first movie was the only one that actually made money. the second one was alright but didn't compare to the first film box office wise.

Do you think this effort will fall into the category of crow crappiness?
  • BroncoBunny
I think Taylor Kitsch (Gambit from Wolverine) would be well suited for the main role in the movie.
  • Jamel
    Ninja Assassin star, Rain
  • bomberman
lets play a game called "no one would care about this movie"
  • joe random
just to offer up different names...

    Alexander Skarsgård
    Tom Hardy

and on a purely looks like him but not an actor, Dave Navarro
  • Shannon
i think stuart townsend should play the crow this time. if anyone says robert pattinson, go kill urself!
  • joey286
heah ledger would hav been great, johnny deep would be a good choice, or i think colin farrel could be a good choice, he could pull that dark mysterious side off

but no one will ever match brandon lee
  • Name
maybe they could cast the guy who played Annakin Skywalker in revenge of the sith? He seemed to have the whole dark brooding thing down pretty well, and he can't do any worse than the sequels to the original did!
  • WT
I think they should have an open casting call and go for the candidate best qualified to be in the role. I would say have an unknown but ready actor for the film.
  • tleblanc
I think it would be a good call to reboot this movie. It's pretty damn epic. It seems to me that it has already peaked in popularity. I mean i don't know many others who have seen this movie or read the comic, which is a shame because it's one of my favorite movies. I feel as though a rebooted movie would kind of re-instill popularity into a character that has, regretfullly, died out. Please make it!!!!!!!! By the way, if it is remade or rebooted. I think this would be an excellent break out role for Taylor Kitsch, who played an epic Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
  • Wil
They should cast Rain, the guy from Ninja Assassin!
  • jogun
I think stuart townsend would be a great choice, the man is a good actor who just happens to have bad luck with crappy roles-Queen of the damned wasn't that great but he was just about the only good thing about that film.
