Producers Adrian Askarieh and Daniel Alter have been discussing their various in-development videogame movies, giving very candid status updates and even the odd bit of surprising news. Perhaps the biggest single headline would be the signing of Bruce Willis for a Kane and Lynch movie. If you don’t know the game and can’t make and educated guess but are still somehow curious, he’d be the titular Kane.

In Summer of 2008, it was reported that Willis was in negotiations and Russ noted that he was still attached a few months ago. This latest break sounds somewhat more solid.

More on that, and a good handful of other bits and pieces after the break.

The Kane and Lynch film will start filming next spring under director Simon Crane, will be funded by Millennium and released by Lionsgate. In an interview with Game Daily, Askarieh claims that the casting of Lynch has yet to take place, but in an interview at Collider, Askarieh and Alter reveal that a “British actor” has been cast in the role. Who? Of course, they wouldn’t say. What’s your best guess?

Collider were also told that the Hack/Slash film is gearing up and casting announcements should be forthcoming shortly.

Most of the good stuff is in the Game Daily interview, I’d have to say. I won’t spoil it all here now, but here’s some choice quotes from Askarieh:

Just Cause is a great action-adventure spy movie, which is a totally different motif than Hitman. Hitman is a great assassin movie, Kane and Lynch is a great buddy action movie. So all these are first-and-foremost good movie ideas, then video games.

We don’t have that much money for this movie [Just Cause], but we’re going to get a really cool actor that’s going to be the next level star for the Scorpion character.

They’ve hired Kyle Ward, who wrote KaneĀ and Lynch, to write Hitman 2. And my relationship with Eidos is that they trust me. Every time we get a draft of the script, I send it to them and they give me their notes and comments.

We and the studio are all waiting for the script to come in to make some very big decisions, but we’d love to have Tim if he wants to do the movie [Hitman 2]. We’d love to have him back.

I predict Hitman 5 will be the biggest Hitman game. So the movie’s not based on that, but it’s a really unique, cool, creative storyline with ideas and interesting characters that we’re using for Hitman 2.

There’s plenty more where that came from, including an update on the current state of the Spy Hunter picture.

Will any of these be the videogame movie that bucks every trend and manages to be both critically and commerically well received? In most cases, they won’t actually have to be either, just trundle away on lower-end budgets. Kane and Lynch, however, will have a Bruce Willis-sized straw in its budgetary milkshake. Have Millennium made a bum investement? If I were one of their shareholders I might be feeling a little ticked off right now.

  • I've never played Kane and Lynch before, but perhaps Jeff Bridges for Lynch (assuming that is him in the sunglasses)?
  • jackdurden
Maybe Mickey Rourke or Billy Bob Thorton for Lynch.

Though the character's obvious inspiration, Kevin Gage (Waingro from Heat) would be ideal
  • Christopher_M
they said a British actor has been hired for Lynch
  • clarencesomerset
    Statham of course.
  • Phoenix
Seems too obvious. I prefer Vinnie Jones.
  • goobafats
    Ray Winstone, perhaps?
  • Never played the game either but I'm thinking Ice-T.
  • Jeff Gerstmann 2007. Never Forget.
  • Frederik
    HAHA
  • Ugh, are you one of those people who blame the game for him losing his job? It happened 2 years ago and we still don't know if Eidos pushed Gamespot to fire him. Maybe he was fired because he was a lousy critic?

If Eidos or Gamespot are responsible for him losing his job, what does this have to do with the game? You blame the game, you blame the people who made it and Io Interactive has nothing to do with it.
  • See, Frederik here had the right idea.
  • At least make a "/sarcasm" at the end. That way i'll know.
  • Sketch
He was a shitty critic, but that game still was one of the worst. Either way I don't see how they could have picked that property out of the countless others that can be plucked.

But I would have gone as far as saying Peter Stormare as Lynch.
  • It has an interesting story and two very interesting characters. I think it would work very well on the big screen.
  • One of these days the film industry will get it right and shake the stigma of video game adaptation stinkers.
  • Money_Talks
Yes but until they do....Elias Koteas as Lynch all the way baby!!!
  • joker93
Never played the game but judging from that picture Hugo Weaving kinda looks the part... he should only grow beard and 'stache, which combined with the haircut and the sunglasses will make him look just like the guy on the picture. But I agree, Kevin Gage would be absolutely perfect.
  • The game is horrible. Let the streak of shitty games turn movies continue.
  • lovehorse

  • I am a huge Kane & Lynch Fan. I really, really hope it turns out great, i love the game and it would sadden me to see it in the same league as the Hitman film. Bruce Willis is good news, but i'll be prepared for something really bad.
  • dagreenman18
Aww I thought he was playing Lynch, which would have been much more interesting.
  • Victor
Is said British actor Mark Strong?

    I could see it.
  • BrendonConnelly
    That's an interesting idea.
  • ashwilliams
    Santiago Segura for Lynch
  • DeanMoriarty
Yeah, Kane&Lynch is a good movie idea allright. But thats because its one half a series of trademark scenes from Michael Mann movies, including the visual style. Basically every idea in this game is "stolen" (inspired or whatever) from a movie or another game. WHich makes especially the characters deeper than in other games. I hope they stick with the grim ending (either one).
Just Cause on the other hand is almost so ridiculously over the top, its either gonna be a very enjoyable, self-ironic action movie or its gonna suck like Hitman. Hitman should have never been made, the story of the game was utter bullshit, the fun was all in the non-linear gameplay and the mission scenarios. Watching that olyphant-dude having lame fistfights and a stupid love affair doesnt get my interest. Shoot'em-up was the movie that has never been a game and succeeded the most in being close to the fun of an action game.
  • greggorybasore
So is bruce willis playing the guy with the magic gun that makes your nose bleed or the guy carrying Lady Gaga and trying to hide her penis from the paparazzi?
  • goobafats
  • Lightemup
Bruce Willis was a pretty good choice for Kane, the Hitman movie was good, but not great, the way that they directed it, it seemed a little cheesy, maybe it was just me but that was my thought. I just really hope neither one of the movies turn into a Punisher: Warzone. BLAH!
  • Travis Wilson
    Ian McShane for Lynch
  • James
Uhm, this article says nothing about Willis being confirmed, only that it is supposed to say so somewhere. It doesn't. The quotes do not say anything either.

So what gives? Is Willis in or not? Did the producers say so? Can you give us at least one quote to justify your headline?
  • "Phantom"
i hope they take the tokyo night club in the movie, that was one of my favorite levels of the whole game.and is a very important level in the games storyline
  • matski
gary oldman would be a perfect actor for lynch ,i wouldnt have guess that bruce willis would play kane, ive always thought that george cloony looks a bit like kane or nise versa, anyway played the game and my first impression was "this would make an awesome movie",cant wait to see it.
