TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN
(Available as single-disc and 2-Disc Special Edition)
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is an exceedingly stupid movie. To criticize the plot for being aggressively unfocused and convoluted would serve very little purpose, because it suggests the movie is even remotely concerned with having a plot. For the purpose of saving time, I will summarize the overall story thusly: a lot of goofy shit happens, and none of it makes any sense. By comparison, the first Transformers is practically Shakespearean in its masterful storytelling abilities. This sequel is obviously less concerned with taking the franchise in interesting new directions than it is playing everything on as epic a scale as the increased budget will allow. With that in mind, if you appreciated any elements of the original Transformers beyond the visual thrill of seeing hunks of shape-shifting metal beating the shit out of each other, it’s very likely that this sequel will strike you as substantial disappointment. I, however, managed to enjoy the first Transformers strictly in spite of its non-robot elements, not because of them. So while Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen may take things a couple of steps further in the realm of tedious subplots, annoying characters and asinine sight gags (wrecking ball testicles? robo-humping? …Oh Michael Bay, you scamp!), those—like myself—that are able to avoid getting worked up over those unfortunate inclusions will still find themselves rewarded with the familiar selling points of the franchise: giant robots, fast cars, hot chicks, and explosions. There are also some new ones, such as Optimus Prime busting out dual swords from his arms to Slap Chop some Decepticon scum. Such are the film’s unsophisticated pleasures. With the right mindset though, scenes like these offer more than enough enjoyment to satisfy the cravings of many an action junkie—granted that you’re able to decipher what’s going on throughout the unreserved chaos of Michael Bay’s shooting style.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: DVD – 2-disc includes audio commentary by director Michael Bay and writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the multi-part documentary The Human Factor: Exacting Revenge of the Fallen (this feature includes Seeds of Vengeance: Development and Design, Domestic Destruction: Production - United States, Joint Operations: Production - Military, Wonders of the World: Production - Middle East, Start Making Sense: Editing, Under the Gun: Visual Effects and Running the Gauntlet: Post-Production and Release), the featurette A Day with Bay: Tokyo, a 25 Years of Transformers featurette, the NEST: Transformer Data-Hub which explores the conceptual artwork of the film, the multi-angle featurette Deconstructing Visual Bayhem which includes commentary by pre-visualization supervisor Steve Yamamoto, extended scenes, and Linkin Park’s New Divide music video. Blu-ray – Includes everything on the DVD, as well as The ALLSPARK Experiment interactive feature, the Giant Effing Movie featurette, The Matrix of Marketing archive of trailers, poster art and other marketing materials, and additional NEST: Transformer Data-Hub information options for each robot.

CHERI
I’m not terribly into either period pieces or romances, so it’s not surprising that Cheri’s trailer didn’t interest me at all. For those with a stronger appreciation for the genre, however, the allure of all the impressive talent behind the film will probably guarantee a few rentals: it stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Kathy Bates, it’s directed by Stephen Frears (The Queen, High Fidelity), and it’s written by Christopher Hampton (Atonement, Dangerous Liaisons). It sounds like it should be a surefire winner, though the middling critical response suggests otherwise.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: A making of featurette and deleted scenes.

    OH, SNAP!
  • Very good argument Camel_Slayer I suppose that Quigley will be covering Pauley Shore movies too then. It's film news.

I have a better byline for the Transformers sequel...

"Transformers: Fool Me Twice, Shame on Me"

In the ensuing months since I barely escaped an IMAX showing of this war crime with my sanity, I have decided that it actually is the worst movie I've ever seen. And I don't give that crown lightly. I walked away dazed and bruised from a 'let's watch this crap' showing of 'Battlefield Earth' with some friends who now all sort of share a 'band of brothers' style common disaster. We could meet every few years like Vietnam vets. But Transformers 2 has wrestled the crown from 'Terl' and his platform-shoe wearing buddies.
  • greycolumbus
I don't see how Transformers 2 worked on any level. Let alone a dumb action movie. At this point, the only way I could watch that movie again is with rifftrax.
  • Kyle C.
I hated this movie in theatres but just bought the blu-ray. What the fuck is wrong with me? What can I say, I'm a sucker for pretty pictures, plus that forest fight scene in Imax looks AMAZING!!! If you do buy it, get the version at Walmart with Imax.
  • starscream9289
I'm not even gonna waste precious gigabites torrenting this crap. It had only one good scene, Optimus vs. Megs, Starscream, and Blackout, and if I wanted to see it I could just go to YouTube.
  • oats
shame on /film (AQ) for encouraging people to support transformers 2 in any way. I am disappointed and kind of surprised
  • OK, that's a fair point. But in my defense, I hate everyone and want to watch them suffer.
  • How much money is Paramount paying /Film for the publicity over Transformers? Neither one of the films were good, the special effects were no more impressive than anything I've seen before, and the acting is atrocious and the writing is worse.
  • I'm getting fat-ass checks from Paramount. I don't even have to cash them; they actually transform into money.

I was worried for a second that the studio wouldn't be thrilled with me calling the film "exceedingly stupid" in the first sentence of my write-up, or going on to say that it's filled with "tedious subplots, annoying characters and asinine sight gags", but luckily, they were too busy sending me money to notice.
  • Very droll, but not what I meant. Between the constant Transformer 3 coming soon posts, all the pre-release attention to TF2 and every other fucking article about the Bay-Fox feud some of the writers for this site never let the cycle for Transformers die.
  • Camel_Slayer
All that stuff is film news. This is a film news site. Get over it.

    Rent it? Transformers 2? Really??
C'mon guys, I thought you were better than this.
  • shadow
So, to sum up: "Oh hey guys yeah the story was shit, the actors where shit, and you can't get emotionally involved at all. But it's got robots!"

Your lured in by the studio throwing money at your eyes.

As a film fan, it's appalling to me that you could do anything to promote a film that treats it's audience to as much racist, sexist, and nonsensical bullshit that this film possesses.

Your money encourages more shit like this to be made people.
  • It's my job to share my honest opinion on the film itself, judging it solely on its own terms. It isn't my job to take McLuhan's "the medium is the message" route to judge the social ramifications of a film like this performing so well in the U.S., and what it means for the future of cinema. That's a different discussion entirely.

And while, yes, I think it's unfortunate that there are people who will watch Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and applaud it for its great filmmaking and storytelling, and will likely even hail it as the best movie of the year, knowingly letting those outside cultural influences serve as a reason to disregard the film would be dishonest and pathetic. Is it a dumb movie? Sure, but I enjoyed it anyway. It's as simple as that.
  • Solid
What the piss? While yes the film loses a lot of points for the john torturro ass shot, I have to strongly disagree that it has no plot. The movie's about Sam becoming a MAN, having to leave his parents, and accept his fate as a grown ass responsible adult. they even have ghost robots come out and explain it to us. Though I understand if you don't give a crap about sam then the movie doesn't have a leg to stand on...
  • Bull
    Ugh.
  • Ed
you are officially the funniest person I have ever met in my life
  • I can undertand someone watching and liking the Transformers for the spectacle of it all, I can fall into this category some days. What I don't understand is that someone can see Sam as the redeeming factor of that movie. Every one of his scenes were poorly acted, directed and written. Not to mention beyond cliched. How can you claim the exsistance of that character the series' redeeming factor?

Okay I know that there are "tons" of movies out every week but how could they miss mentioning 3 great (or good ones) at all ?? Dead Snow, The Children (Instantly a classic... really its that good) and The Thaw come out this week. Get all 3 or at least The Children...... and i mean nazi zombies!! Dead snow epic wins just for having nazi zombies!
  • Dead Snow is by no means a good movie
  • Unless you know something I don't, none of those three films came out this week. Source?
  • kolpitz
THE CHILDREN and THE THAW came out two weeks ago, along with OFFSPRING and SEVENTH MOON, all part of the Ghost House Underground line. I don't what all this talk about DEAD SNOW coming out today is. Rotten Tomatoes lists it as today but no vendors or even Netflix have it coming out today. In fact, I can't find a date for it at all. I think it's a mistake. I believe you're safe, Quigley.
  • I'm having trouble finding information about the release of Dead Snow anywhere, much less actually finding it available to purchase. It isn't even listed on Amazon, which isn't a good sign (just the UK version is, which was released back in August).

You might want to check on that, unless I'm mistaken.
  • freemachine
'Dead Snow' was released in a very strange way. I actually saw it on digital cable TV a few months ago while it was still in theaters---it was offered as On-Demand programing (listed under 'IFC in Theaters').
  • dr_hamburger
you give transformers 2 a rent it? more like destroy every copy and wipe out every trace of its existence!
  • I would posit that if Transformers 2 really didn't care about having a plot, then they should have 86-ed that ridiculous, long, boring, stupid and non-sensical exposition-bot scene. It still would have been a bad, dumb movie, but whoever thought that jamming several minutes of a robot explaining what was going on in a movie that had no plot sent the film grinding to a screeching halt.
  • The scene was obligatory. Just because Michael Bay didn't care about the plot, that doesn't mean he can get away with there not being at least some semblance of one. It was probably thrown in for exactly the reason you suggested: to jam several minutes of plot exposition into an otherwise plot-less film. Nothing more than a half-assed attempt by Bay to justify all of the ensuing carnage, as if such things need a justification.
  • Itri12
    Well that was boring :P

Anyone looking to buy Transformers should go to Walmart where they have exclusive rights to the IMAX version of the film. The blu-ray and DVD both sell for $19.96 in store.
  • Andy III
"Anyone looking to buy Transformers should..."

    get their freaking head examined.
  • DeviousMrBlonde
You have an IMAX screen at home? That's awesome!!
  • optimusprime24
