It didn’t take long at all for Robert Redford’s The Conspirator to get off the ground. The film, which hinges on the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, was announced only months ago and is already shooting in Savannah, GA. We knew some of the cast prior to the shoot’s start, but now we’ve got a host of good names to throw your way, in addition to some pics and video.

We knew that James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn were the primaries, with Penn playing Mary Surratt, the woman charged and eventually executed for her part in the conspiracy to kill Lincoln. McAvoy is Frederick Aiken, her defender.

Now we’ve got a bunch of new names: Tom Wilkinson, Evan Rachel Wood, Kevin Kline and Alexis Bledel are on board, as is Justin Long. (CHUD confirmed Long and Bledel before the trades did, and the Playlist first heard that Wood was in, along with the great Toby Kebbell, which the trades still haven’t reported. Variety reports the rest.) Long is Aiken’s best friend, a one-armed Civil War vet; Wood is Mary Surratt’s daughter; Bledel is Aiken’s wife; Wilkinson is Aiken’s mentor and US Senator Reverdy Johnson; and Kline is Edwin Stantin, Lincoln’s War Secretary. And who’s Kebbell playing? That would be John Wilkes Booth, raconteur and assassin. Though it’s probably a small role, hat’s got my ticket bought, right there.

The Playlist is also to thank for the photos of McAvoy and Wood in costume, seen in part above. Head over there to see them in full. Meanwhile, here are two pretty silly local on-set reports that take a bit of patience to sit through, but do give a couple views of actors in costume like, walking and talking and stuff. Not too exciting, but it’s something. I love this cast and am really intrigued to see how the final edit shakes out.

The cast is amazing, I'll see it, even though Robert Redford isn't always reliable in the director's chair.

All of us here in Savannah, Georgia are really excited about the movie, and that they are filming it here. We Savannian's are proud of our city, and are happy to show it off to the world.
  • Awesome city!!

    Hey Russ,
They are filming near my apartment in a few weeks. I'll send you what I can.
  • Wow Robert Redford doesn't mess about, huh! Announced, then straight into production. Not like some other filmmakers who bombard us with hopes of dozens of projects that just float around doing nothing for years.

My great-grandfather William Hurley lived across the street from Mrs. Surratt at 617 H St., N.W. (current address) in Washington. The building still stands

Mrs. Surratt's son John fled to the Vatican where he was later identified as a Swiss Guard by a Gonzaga teacher. The U.S. representative to the Vatican at the time was Rufus King who was appointed to this post by Abraham Lincoln. King demanded that Surratt be extradited. King's descendant, Judge Rufus King, ruled against the Confederate Memorial Association and its president, John Edward Hurley (a former Gonzage student) thus closing the only civil war museum in Washington in 1997.

Judge King's rulings favored the Sons of Confederate Veterans organization that had a John Wilkes Booth chapter. David Herold, who was hung with Mrs. Surratt, was a Gonzaga student who fled with Booth.

The Confederate Memorial Association had been attempting to removed Aryan Nation and KKK types from its ranks; an effort that Judge King thought was unworthy. This resulted in my being jailed and fined over $20,000 because of fraudulent legal bills submited by a JAG officer and lawyer for the plaintiffs, Herbert Harmon.

Intersections of history with the present are indeed remarkable.

Hollywood virtually always FAILS to pull off complex period dramas ---let alone history dramas.

It's part of the price we pay for livign in our franchise-slum comfort zone
    ----i.e. no memory ---no depth.

Redford succumbed to those realities decades ago ---and all the PC
posturing in the world can't save him. Redford NEVER got beyond to
much of anything. Plus a project like this would be much better served
    by HBO.

---Paging John Huston! ---paging John Huston!
