When press releases and news articles first appeared with details of new distributor Apparition, one thing stood out: Tree of Life, the upcoming and as yet very mysterious new film from lone wolf director Terrence Malick, was planned for release on Christmas Day. This seemed wildly optimistic, as the film’s production had been kept so tightly under wraps that we barely know what the film is about, and had no reason to believe it was done. That skepticism turns out to be well-founded, as the film has been pushed to an undetermined release in 2010.

Anne Thompson got the details from Apparition head Bob Berney, who hasn’t yet seen the currently unfinished film and says “I can’t tell you when it will come out.” In some situations, a new distribution head saying he hasn’t seen one of the films on his slate would be insane, but this is Malick.

The director earned nearly limitless cred with his first two films, Badlands and Days of Heaven. So much cred, in fact, that when he made The Thin Red Line almost twenty years after Days of Heaven, actors lined up to work with him. And even though many of those actors ended up cut from the final film, people are still wild to work with Malick. He’s an intuitive artist, and even if his films are far from perfect (I’m no big fan of his most recent movie, The New World) he remains a treasure.

So now Malick continues the year-long process of editing Tree of Life, a long father/son drama focused on grief and forgiveness. It is apparently based on a story he conceived 30 years ago and will be accompanied in some measure by the IMAX documentary (or semi-documentary) Voyage of Time that chronicles the ‘birth and death of the universe’. Brad Pitt stars in Tree of Life and is said to be narrating Voyage of Time. That’s all we really know of the latter film, beyond the fact that it is evidently based on a prehistoric prologue to the story that became Tree. Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain are also in Tree, which we may see at Cannes next year.

If that all sounds confusing, don’t worry. It is, but only because Malick has been very good at keeping details close.

    Damn! The wait continues...

Gahhhhhh! I mean, I kinda knew deep down it wasn't going to make a 2009 release, but I still hadn't HEARD anything, so I was cautiously optimistic.

    But here we are.

Whatever. Take your time, Terrence. I loved (LOVED) The New World. I love all his movies. This will be an event.

Is there any chance of an extended cut of The Thin Red Line ever being released?
  • smither
I loved The New World and Thin Red Line. He is such a poetic director!
  • Sounds like it will be worth the wait.
  • Most importantly that documentary is going to feature work by the guy that did the special effects from The Fountain. These are two men that understand sheer beauty and therefore I am more pumped for it than the feature. Not to say I am not excited for that feature.

It's a damn shame he took so many years off. It was amazing he still had it in him after so long with TTRL.

If it takes another 10 years, that's alright. It's Terrence Malick. It will be worth the wait. Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line and The New World are three of my favorite films. Extraordinary! I just wish we could see the cut of The Thin Red Line with Clooney and Brodey's story arcs intact. Hell if its six hours long, that's okay.

Malick could take an eternity to make this film. I'll be waiting..
  • luke_a
Hey, I'm all for waiting if it means the movie will be even more breathtaking than before. I also LOVED THE NEW WORLD and I also really dug BADLANDS as well. THIN RED LINE I'm more a fan of the first twenty or so minutes than the entire film, but still worth it.

Malick's films are like Pixar. It's entirely subjective which ones you like more than the other.

heath ledger was supposed to be in the pitt role. :(
  • This is annoying. He dropped out of the film before he passed away.
  • jasonb26
yeah, i wasn't sure if he pulled out, or if it was because he died. that's why i left it at 'he was supposed to be in the pitt role.' sorry if that annoyed - no nevermind: because of yer snark - i'm glad i annoyed you.
  • When I read what Tree of Life was about, tears came because Heath would have been so suited to this role.

Just opened the wound again of missing Heath.

We shall see what Brad Pitt can do with the role, but it will be impossible sitting there watching Pitt play what Heath would have played and not imagine how Heath would have channeled yet another character for our souls' pleasure.

how does Terrence make a living in between Days of Heaven and Thin Red Line?
  • I read somewhere that he was a professor at MIT for philosophy. Maybe he is doing some lecturing somewhere. Also he did some script doctoring in the 80s. Probably gets paid to revise and rubber stamp a script here or there.

    In Malick we trust.
  • jasonb26
i usually use that with 'nolan', but malick's a perfect fit as well!
  • Badlands is one of the best movies ever made. The man is a cinematic god as far as I'm concerned. It'll be worth the wait.
