foster-sutherland

I haven’t had much reason to look forward to the upcoming remake of Charles Bronson’s The Mechanic. Sure, having Jason Statham in the lead role as a weary hit man seems  like an easy sell, but you have to temper that with the fact that Simon West (Con-Air, Tomb Raider) is directing. I had relegated the project in my mind as yet another schlocky action fest that Statham was simply too good for—that is, until we learned that Ben Foster and Donald Sutherland will be joining the film. Foster will play an apprentice to Statham’s character, and Sutherland will portray Statham’s handler and Foster’s father.

If Foster can bring even half of the intensity he’s portrayed in 3:10 to Yuma and (to a lesser extent) Alpha Dog, it’ll make this film worth a look for me. Foster also proved he can hold his own against the towering on screen presence of Russel Crowe and Christian Bale in Yuma, and I’d love to see him alongside Statham.  And of course, the addition of Sutherland certainly classes things up.

With decent talent in line, it’s now entirely up to Simon West and screenwriter Karl Gajdusek (Dead Like Me) to pay homage to the original film. Directed by frequent Bronson collaborator Michael Winner, the original dripped of ’70s crime film grit and is famous for having a long dialog-free opening sequence featuring Bronson prepping for his next hit. There’s little evidence that West can bring the same level of poetry to the material, but I’m hoping for the best.

  • Foster in Pandorum made that movie for me, even though it was pretty much what I expected it to be. But still these are good signs.

I like Ben Foster, but he went too "method" in Alpha Dog. His eyes didn't looked stoned. They looked like they just hurt from whatever drops he used. He was awesome in 3:10 in Yuma so I think he definitely has an upside. I'm interested to see how this project turns out.

Ben Foster is an incredibly under appreciated actor. I would really like to see him get some quality roles. This seems to be a step in the right direction.
  • 100% agreed.

How he went from Angel to the badass Charlie Prince and creepy stranger is beyond me.
  • And don't forget his role as the handicapped Eli in Freaks and Geeks. The guy can do anything.
  • Joe
I love me some Ben Foster in my films, so I'll give this a shot.

Like most everyone who already posted, I am also a fan of Ben Foster and this sounds pretty interesting. As for the director, well I found Con Air to be an alright movie. Nothing amazing but was not horrible. At least when compared to Tomb Raider.

Ben foster is one of the best up and coming actors in our time, he will be huge.
  • I love Ben Foster. If it wasn't for him I never would have watched Pandorum. As someone else already said, he can do anything. He was so adorable as Eli in Freaks and Geeks. I wish he was in more episodes.

I just recently watched Birds Of America and Bang Bang You're Dead in which he also gave outstanding performances. He's always incredibly intense, no matter what role he plays.

It's about time people finally recognize him as the talented actor he is. I have high hopes for this movie and The Messenger. Someone give this guy a little golden man already!

I first saw Foster in Bang Bang You're Dead when it came out and i've always liked him alot but when i saw him in 3:10 to Yuma, my brain fucking exploded. Charlie Prince is one of the most bad ass characters i've ever seen. I'll watch anything with this guy!

They should have gotten Mickey Rourke for the title. Foster is great choice for the younger hitman role.
  • I'm pretty excited for this actually - I do like the cast choice.

has anyone seen The Messenger yet. Ben Foster is great and so is Woody Harrelson. It's a great film and worth the watch. Plus it shows a different side of his acting ability.
