World of Warcraft

A few days ago there was a rumor floating around that the World of Warcraft film, to be directed by Sam Raimi, would be called Rise of the Lich King and be based off one of the WoW spin-off novels. That was based on the fact that the IMDB listing had changed to reflect that title, and we never ran it for exactly that reason. Anyone can add to and change the IMDB, so it’s not to be trusted. Now, however, we know that the script will be an original story, and we know who’s writing it.

MTV reports that Saving Private Ryan screenwriter Robert Rodat will write the movie, currently being referred to as simply Warcraft. Raimi says,

We want to be really faithful to the game. We would have our writer, Robert Rodat, really craft an original story within that world that feels like a ‘World of WarCraft’ adventure. Only obviously it’s very different ’cause it’s expanded and translated into the world of a motion picture.

Granted, if you read all of Raimi’s comments at MTV, you’ll see that they all remain completely hypothetical. This one is a ways off yet, and it sounds as if there’s not much more than high-level spitballing going on in terms of getting the story together. (”I think we would try and find touchstones within the game to make it accurate and true and choose one or some of the lands that are portrayed in the game with as much accuracy and authenticity as possible.”)

In other words, Raimi and Warner Bros. realize that, with millions of subscribers, Warcraft represents a great franchise possibility, but that there’s an equally large opportunity to get it wrong and alienate the entire fanbase. WoW has myths and legends built into the story structure, and the film may end up adapting and expanding one of those, or simply referencing and building upon it with a full set of new characters.

  • That's one of the most convoluted grab bags of a headline I've ever read. I'm not really sure what to make of that seemingly random mix of people and experience, and I'm pretty sure the whole thing would just confuse the hell out of me if I tried to understand it.

Perfect for a World of Warcraft movie.

You must be a fan of the game considering your undertone and smart remarks to something that you have a high interest in. Have you actually played the game or looked into any of the lore in this franchise? The story is pretty easy to grasp I am sure anyone with a 3rd grading reading level could get a clear understanding of what's going on.
  • Nah, I haven't tried looking into the franchise. I usually prefer to make witty, yet unfair and stereotypical jokes about things I know nothing about.

Your snarky retort is well-placed. I totally earned that. ;-)

I was kinda expecting Sam to go back to his horror movies after Spiderman 5

Everyone who plays the game will just download it from megaupload.

shouldn't this movie just be called the Warcraft movie. or is WoW just too marketable of a name?
  • Elizabeth
It should, but most people are referring to it as the WoW movie despite it being the Warcraft movie. It's not a simple distinction for people who don't know the universe.
  • Will the diehard fans of the game leave their PC chairs long enough to see the film should it ever actually happen? Predictably horrid idea.
  • This has potential for so many things to go wrong. Stop making movies based on games: they don't work.
  • Since this one is still "a long ways off" I wonder why it's even being considered. Anyone who watches the market of MMOs knows that WoW is long in the tooth and pretty much only the hardcore are left. Sure, that's till a good 5-6 Million people, but hardly enough to warrant a huge blockbuster several years from now (if the slow leak continues in subscribers, what will the base of players be in three-five years?). If this had come out 2 years ago when the service had upwards of 11 million players, it would have made more sense.
And I agree we really should stop looking at video games for plot. They work so well on the small computer screen because we are a part of the story. But ask anyone who has sat through a friend recounting "this one time, in Naxx", NO ONE cares about your raid stories unless they were actually there.

Not to mention Bioware's MMORPG "Star Wars: The Old Republic" is in the works which I believe by the time it comes out will be fresh enough to take a good chunk of the "WoW" crowd.

Why do people keep talking about WoW as though it's the only Warcraft game? Warcraft has been a popular series since like 1994 and there have been 4 games released so far (plus expansion packs). Obviously none of the previous games had the huge popularity or public exposure that WoW does (much like the gamers themselves, ha ha ha) but when your talking about where to get stories from, Warcraft III, for example, has a much more structured and adaptable storyline than anything from WoW. Just saying.

WAIT! Whoa.... there's more then one Warcraft game. Next your going to tell me there's a sci-fi rts that Blizzard made called Starcraft. Jeez, stop making stuff up.

News has been pretty nice so far...good decisions being made and competence being shown early in development... Im pleasantly surprised.

Thank you for not reporting that bogus story. I lost too much respect for too many blogs I used to like because they were reporting it like a verifiable fact.
