Fox to Re-tell the Story of Moses…300-Style

The same writing team hired to make a graphic-novel style, adventurous take on Moby Dick for Timur Bekmambetov and Universal have sold a pitch to Fox that would see them re-telling the story of Moses in the style of Zack Snyder’s 300. Yep, Moses will soon be using the stone tablets bearing God’s laws to knock heads in at a theatre near you. The Bear Jew? Guy’s a pussy compared to this Moses.

Variety reports on the pre-preemptive pitch buy by Fox. It’s a real life-story tale, starting with “his near death as an infant to his adoption into the Egyptian royal family, his defiance of the Pharaoh and deliverance of the Hebrews from enslavement.” And with ‘defiance of the Pharaoh’ you should actually be thinking plagues — massive, gruesome, deadly plagues.

Adam Cooper and Bill Collage are the writers, and while this could be just a big update of The Ten Commandments with modern effects (i.e. a Roland Emmerich-worthy parting of the Red Sea in addition to the aforementioned plagues) the fact that they’re ’sprucing up’ Moby Dick combined with the liberal tossing around of 300 as a stylistic signifier for this version of Moses’ story says to me that this will in fact be much more than a simple update. (Or, shall we say, much different, since ‘much more’ implies a rise in quality.) And from a certain perspective this pitch makes all sorts of sense — warped, twisted, Rob Liefeld writing/illustrating the Bible sort of sense, but whatever. 300 just had buckets of blood. Moses will have a river of it!

Despite the fact that Moses was said to have lived to 120, why do I expect the majority of the film will focus around a younger, ruggedly attractive version of the character? Doddering old guys just don’t look good speed-ramped and covered with blood.

Of course Liam Neeson will play Moses.
  • I could dig Liam Neeson as Moses. For sure.

Hebrews! Ready your unleavened bread and eat hearty, for tonight we dine in ... someplace between here and the promised land!
  • dangeer
I wouldn't mind this, just so long as it is an accurate depiction of the Moses story.
  • Lance_HBomb
    This is epic.
  • Bout time some one rewrote the infallible word of god and updated it for the naughties.

Oh noes... Facebook connect doesn't work! If they could make this film and a non-religious way, focusing on mythical action the way they did 300, I would be a huge fan of this flic! This is coming from an atheist btw.

"This is coming from an atheist btw."

Thank God you put that in there. I wouldn't have taken your post seriously unless it was from an "atheist." This coming from a christian/jewish/agnositc/atheist btw.

Go back to Egypt and tell them there that Abraham's daughters and her sons are yours no more. Tell them Hebrews are free.
  • Does anyone thing we'll see Moses kick the pharaoh into the red sea like Leonidas did with the Persian messenger?
  • Topolab
    George Clooney as Moses.
  • Bull
    Ernest Borgnine as Moses.
  • drytoad1
Just keep Tom Cruise far away from it..................
  • GregoryV
It's gonna be a slow motion epic!
  • The Great Cambino
I wanna see Moses peeting his Hebrew vino and getting on to the bed with his wives' like hand-maidens, real horrorshow.
  • Ashitaka
History of the World Part II?

The concept sounds silly, but then again who knows maybe it will be alright.

I love 300 and bloody movies like that but being a true Christian, I really hope they don't turn Moses into someone he's not. I'm down with the green screens and effects of 300 but if I see Moses pull out a blade and slice someone's head off.. I'm walking out. What's next? Reminds me of that Family Guy episode with Chris Tucker and Jesus in some cop comedy with machine guns.
