If you’re interested in either of the two insane pieces of cinema Werner Herzog completed this year, you’ve probably seen the crudely cut, sales-type trailer for Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans that surfaced earlier this year. Now there’s a real, ‘meant for audiences’ trailer and, until the last few seconds when the iguanas and ‘dancing soul’ stuff hits, it almost looks…sane. Almost. Check it out after the break.

If you read the straight-up synopsis, which follows, the movie does almost sound like a regular cop film:

The main character is Terrence McDonagh, a New Orleans Police sergeant, who starts out as a good cop, receiving a medal and a promotion to lieutenant for heroism during Hurricane Katrina. During his heroic act, McDonagh injures his back and later becomes addicted to prescription pain medication. McDonagh struggles with addictions and finds himself involved with drug dealer Big Fate, who is suspected of murdering a family of African immigrants.

But then there’s the weird stuff, like the singing iguanas, and the over the top performance from Nic Cage. Reviews out of Toronto were mixed. They typically highlighted the film’s entertainment factor, but frequently also said it was a bit of a mess. (Though not so much so as the much faster and messier My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done, Herzog’s other film for 2009.)

The possible creakiness doesn’t surprise me; a lot of people have conveniently forgotten how creaky some of Herzog’s late ’90s / early ’00s films could be. That’s not a knock against him; Herzog is obviously interested in striking while the iron is hot, and sometimes that leads to a lack of polish. I’m thinking specifically of Invincible, if you need an example. But I can take the creakiness if the movie is as entertaining as some have suggested; the end of this trailer indicates that it just might be.

Yahoo has the trailer in HD if the lil ‘ol embed below isn’t good enough for you.

"Shoot him again....his soul is still dancing!" haha. I'm invested.

    I'm I getting a Face/Off Nic Cage performance?
  • Hopefully. One of the last times I liked Cage's acting though I can't say that he hasn't found his niche. Those that like him really dig his stuff and really it has at least been entertaining to me, nothing award winning but hey not every movie has to move me emotionally to be entertaining.

    YES. YES YES YES.

Nicholas Cage is finally back in a good movie. I just hope his hairpiece doesn't steal the show.
  • It has been doing that for a long time. Though hopefully the rumors of Ghost Rider 2 aren't entirely true, just speculation. Grah.

Cage can run around New Orleans in a red cape, snortin' smack until his skull bursts into flames...I'm still not gonna see this film. Just watch the original 'Bad Lieutenant' with Harvey Keitel (terrific performance).

my favorite so far is the Twitch review:

"It is rude and crass and gloriously so, not just pushing the envelope but tearing it into tiny little pieces, lighting the pieces on fire and then baking the ashes into a batch of hash brownies. It is immensely quotable and so loaded with odd and surprising moments that any attempt to discuss story risks simply devolving into a recitation of favorite moments."

I've heard from people who've seen it that this movie is terrific, and this trailer just sold me.

Has gotten very positive reviews on the festival circuit. Herzog never disappoints!

Speaking of hair, what is up with Nic's hair? Has he gone bald or what? I know he tries to cover it up... (Ghost Rider was laughable even without Cage's hair piece)...

I still have no idea if I want to see this or not. It looks insane but I can't tell if it is awesomely so or horribly so. I'll see if I have the money once this comes out. I might have to wait for DVD.

    video no longer available =/

Does it have US distribution yet? I don't think so...

I'm I the only one that thinks it sounds like Cage is doing a Ryan Phillipe impersonation with that voice. Anyway, This trailer makes the movie look much better than the other one but I'm still not sure. Oh, and what is up with that retarded title, I feel like's gonna turn some people off right there because it feels like a tv miniseries. Either call it Bad Lieutenant OR Port of Call: New Orleans, not both!
